A serum lipid components were determined from 571 healthy Koreans ranging age of 20 to 70 years old. The results were obtained as follows. 1. The mean value of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and total lipid in both male and female were 182mg/dl and 189mg/dl, 44.6mg/dl and 48.7mg/dl , 122mg/dl and 121mg/dl, 181mg/dl and 192mg/dl and 584mg/dl, respectively. 2. The concentration of total cholesterol, phospholipid and total lipid were increased gradually as the ages become 50s in male and 60s in female. No significant difference was observed over those ages. 3. The concentration of HDL-cholesterol according to age shows no significant difference, but its concentration was slightly higher in female than male. 4. The concentration of triglyceride was increased gradually as the age is getting old, but no sex difference was observed.
Rotavirus was detected in 357(30.5%) of 1, 170 Pediatric inpatients with acute gastroenteritis during the study performed from March 1982 to December 1983. The incidence of rotavirus gastroenteritis was highest in November (63.0%) and was lowest in June (9.4%). The seasonal variation of rotavirus gastroenteritis was significantly high in Autumn (44.4%). The most prevalent age group was 6 to 24 months (88.3%), while the age over 36 months showed the lowest rate (3.8%). The ELISA was as sensitive as electron microscopy for detection of rotavirus.
The authors studied on the level of total protein with its electrophoretic patterns and total lactic dehydrogenase activity with its isoenzymes in cerebrospinal fluid, in 149 patients with central nerve system disorders admitted to Han Yang University Hospital from June 1976 to January 1978. The studies were divided four groups, 44 cases of normal control, 49 cases of bacterial miningitis, 30 cases of viral meningitis, and 26 cases of other CNS disorders. The. results were obtained as follows. 1. In control group, the mean value of total protein was 30±10mg/ dl and the total LDH activity was 20.0±8.2 units, while the electrophoretic patterns of the protein were 4.3+2.0% for pre-albumin, 65.6+5.9% for albumin, 3.7±1.4% for alpha-1, 14.9+1.6% for alpha-2, 14. 2±3.5% for beta, and 7.3+2.6% for gamma-globulin, and the isoenzymes were 70.5±10.4%for LDH1> 21.5±11.8% for LDH2, 6.8±4.2% for LDH3, 1.0±1.4 for LDH4, and 0.2±0. 9% for LDH5, respectively in cerebrospinal fluid. 2. In bacterial meningits group, the total protein concentration and the LDH activity were greatly elevated and their mean values were 21lmg/dl and 273 units, respectively. Of the LDH isoenzymes, LDH4 and LDH5 were markedly elevated and their mean values were 15.3% and 13.4%, respectively. 3. In viral meningitis group, the total protein was moderately increased, but the total LDH activity was within normal limits, The electrophoretic patterns of protein were remained in normal range, and the isoenzyme LDH 4 and 5 were slightly increased. 4. In patients with other CNS disorders, no significant findings were obtained compared with the control group. 5. The total protein and its fractions of the cerebrospinal fluid in patients with CNS disorders showed no significant correlation with the level of total LDH activity or its isoenzymes.
Teepol-ascorbic acid method for the determination of serum iron and iron binding capacity was modified to a micro procedure requiring only 0.2m1 serum instead of 1 to 2m1 serum used in ordinary methods. This procedure showed good results in the experiments for stability of colored complex, reproducibility, recovery and interfering substance. This micro method was found simple, rapid and reliable when compared with other macro methods.
In 1969 a new cholesterol reagent was introduced by Zlatkis and Zak based on o-phthalaldehyde reaction. Authors modified their procedures for the determination of serum total cholesterol. This modified micro method is simple and rapid. The results are reliable in stability of color reaction, reproducibility and recovery tests. When compared with other methods good results were obtained.
Rapid micromethods for the determination of urea nitrogen, both phenate hypocloiorite and diautylmonoximl methods are still not used in Korea. Authors re evaluated those methods at the points of reproducibility, standard calibration curve and stability of reaction color.
