Integration of 16 Channel CWDM with flat passband

We investigated the characteristics of a compact silica-based 16-channel CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexer) with 5-nm channel spacing. It consists of four stages. Each stage has a dierent number of interleave lters: one, two, four, and eight for the rst, second, third and fourth stages, respectively. Each interleave lter consists of three directional couplers and two phase shifters. We calculate its transmittance with the transfer matrix. Each center channel is separated by between 1.51 and 1.59 m, and its channel spacing is 5 nm. Also, its 1-dB passband, 2-dB passband and 3-dB passband are 2.96 nm, 3.55 nm and 3.94 nm, respectively. We use 90 arc waveguides with a phase dierence length, L. This can greatly reduce the device length in the new layout. The chip size of the proposed 16-channel CWDM is 28.6318.22. Due to the compact size, it can be mass-produced lithographically.

N/A Background/Aims: Exact deterrnination of the extent of bowel involvement in inflammatry bowel disease is essential for the evaluation of disease severity and for the planning of approapriate therapy. The aim of the study was to detemine the accuracy of TC-HMPAO(Hexamethyl Propylene Amine Oxime) labelled leukocyte-SPECT(Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography) in the assessment of disease extent and disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease. Methods: Using a scintigraphy with autologous leukocytes labelled by Tc-HMPAO was performed in 32 cases. In 15 patients with 9 ulcerative colitis, 6 Crohns disease, the clinical, endoscopic and histologic disease activities were compared with SPECT activity index, respectively. Results: 1. 'Tc HMPAO labelled leukocyte SPECT revealed 92.6% sensitivity, 100% specificity and 93.8% accuracy to detect of active inflammation of the colon. 2. The correlation between clinical activity index(Rachmilewiltz), and HMPAO SPECT activity index was very high significant(r=0.91; p0.001), less significant(r=0.69; p0.01) between endoscopy and scan activity index and highly significant(r=0.89; p(0.001) between histologic activity index and scan activity index. Conclusions: Tc-HMPAO labelled leukocyte SPECT is a reliable method to determine the extent of the bowel inflammation and disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease. Hemangiomas are relatively common tumors which are characterized by a proliferation of blood vessels. These lesions are usually present from birth and are considered by most to be hamartomas rather than true neoplasms. A variant of this entity is the intramuscular hemangioma, a tumor arising within normal skeletal muscle ; these comprise less than 1 percent (0.89) of all hemangiomas. Most intramuscular hemangiomas occur in the trunk and extremities, where there is larger muscle volume. Approximately 10 percents of the lesions occur in the head and neck region. The management of oral and perioral hemangiomas and the mode of therapy employed depend on several factors including the age of the patient, the size and extent of the lesion, as well as its clinical characteristics. Presented is a case report of intramuscular hemangioma on masseter treated with surgical excision combined with microembolization of feeding vassels, right facial artery.

Nontraditional or alternative medicine is becoming an increasingly attractive approach for the treatment of various inflammatory disorders and cancers. Curcumin is the major constitute of turmoric powder extracted from the rhizomes of the plant Curcuma longa. Resveratrol is a phytoalexin present in grapes and a variety of medicinal plants. In this report, We investigated the effect of curcumin and resveratrol on regulatory protein of cell cycle, induction of apoptosis and MMP activity. Treatment with 75 M curcumin for 24 hrs produced morphological changing in HN-4 cells. Curcumin and resveratrol inhibited the cellular growth in HN-4 cells. Inhibition of cell growth was associated with down-regulation of cell cycle regulatory proteins. Curcumin-induced caspase-3 activation and Bax degradation were dose-dependent with a maximal effect at a concentration of 100 M. The elevated caspase-3 activity in curcumin treated HN-4 cells are correlated with down-regulation of survivin and cIAP1, but not cIAP2. Curcumin induced a dose-dependent increase of cytochrome c in the cytosol. Curcumin induced-apoptosis was mediated through the release of cytochrome c. In addition, curcumin-induced apoptosis was caused by the generation of reactive oxygen species, which was prevented by antioxidant N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC). Cotreatment with NAC markedly prevented cytochrome c release, Bax cleavage and cell death. Also resveratrol-induced apoptosis was preceded by down-regulation of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2, cIAP1, and caspase-3 activity. However, resveratrol-induced apoptosis was not prevented by antioxidant NAC. In addition, HN-4 cells release basal levels of MMP2 when cultured in serum-free medium. Treatment of the cells with various concentrations of PMA for 24 hr induced the expression and secretion of latent MMP9 as determined by gelatin zymography. HN-4 cells were treated with various concentrations of curcumin and resveratrol in the presence of 75 nM PMA, and MMP2 and 9 activities were inhibited by curcumin and resveratrol.

Ulcerative colitis is associated with a number of extraintestinal complications, including the infrequent occurrence of throboembolic disease. Cerebral venous thrombosis is one of the complications occurred extremely rarely in ulcerative colitis. Only 16 cases were reported in the worldwide literature until 1993. A 27-year-old female with ulcerative colitis developed generalized tonic clonic convusion after transient right hemiparesis. Brain CT demonstrated delta sign in the right occipital area and brain MRI scan demonstrated a low signal intensity area in the superior sagittal sinus. The cerebral angiography showed a lack of filling of the superior sagittal sinus. After intrasinusoidal thrombolytic therapy and heparin infusion, the patients neurologic recovery was complete. Cerebral venous or sagittal sinus thrmbosis occuring in ulcerative colitis was extremely rare and not yet reported in Korea. We report a case of ulcerative colitis complicated with superior sagittal sinus thrombosis and treated with thrombolyitc and heparin therapy. (Korean J Gastroenterol 1996; 28:445 - 450)
