IEC 61850 based substation automation system mainly consists of human machine interface as a client and a various of IEDs as a server. Both of them should require the field testing for performance verification including IEC 61850 communication services. This means that the test can assure the interoperability of IEC 61850 based substation automation system consisted of multi vendor's products. This paper shows a research result on the field test of the IEC 61850 based HMI and IEDs. And it proposes some engineering solutions for the system implementation.

As the smart grid becomes a new paradigm of a power system, IEC 61850-based SAS is expected to play a key role in the smart grid and KEPCO has planed to construct IEC 61850 based substation automation system for all domestic substations since 2012. Accordingly, KEPCO is considering to adopt a new testing method against the limitation of the current legacy testing method. This paper presents the development of the IEC 61850 traffic analysis interface module for constructing the SAS test automation system.
변전자동화 성능 검증을 위한 IEC 61850 통신 패킷 분석프로그램 개발

Substation Automation System is basically operating throughout communicative services among IEC 61850 based devices. So, minimum requirement in order to install the system in the substation is to verify server and client conformance of IEDs and HMIs according to the IEC 61850 standard. UCA IUG has published IEC 61850 conformance test procedures for both the server and the client. This study aims to develop IEC 61850 traffic analyzer for verifying the full communication conformance of the substation automation system and this paper describes the design and implementation of the program.
