Temporal and Spatial Variation in Fish Larvae in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay, South Sea of Korea
유정화 ( Jung Hwa Ryu ),김정배 ( Jeong Bae Kim ),김진구 ( Jin Koo Kim ) 한국수산과학회(구 한국수산학회) 2011 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.14 No.1
Fish larvae were collected monthly with an ichthyoplankton net from 18 stations (including four stations located in eelgrass beds) in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay, southern Korea, in 2007. In total, 33 species of fish larvae were collected, of which Engraulis japonicus (48.5%), Tridentiger trigonocephalus (21.5%), and Omobranchus elegans (9.2%) were dominant. Dominant species varied seasonally: Hexagrammos otakii during December and January, Pholis nebulosa during January and March, Acanthogobius flavimanus in April, T. trigonocephalus in May, E. japonicus during June, July, September, and November, and Sillago japonica in August. Dominant species also differed between sites inside and outside the bays. Leiognathus nuchalis, O. elegans, and T. trigonocephalus were more abundant inside, while H. otakii was more abundant outside. From cluster analysis, three groups were identified according to sampling months (January-April, May- September, and October-December) and two groups according to station (inside and outside bays). The occurrence of small larvae of almost all major fish species indicated that the bays were used as spawning and nursery grounds. An exception was Lateolabrax japonicus, whose specimens were relatively large (>19 mm TL), suggesting that this fish may spawn offshore, with its juveniles approaching the bays with growth.

We investigated fish species composition seasonally at the intake and discharge of Weolseong Nuclear Power Plant (WS-NPP) from February to November 2008 using a trammel net. At the intake, 121 individuals belonging to 28 spe-cies were collected, and 157 fish from 34 species were sampled at the WS-NPP discharge. Dominant species at the intake were Chelidonichthys spinosus (17.2%), Scomber japonicus (11.5%) and Ditrema temminckii (8.2%) at the in-take, while Sillago japonica (18.5%), Chelidonichthys spinosus (13.4%) and Konosirus punctatus (8.3%) dominated at the discharge. The species count and diversity index at the discharge were highest during winter, whereas those at the intake were highest during spring, perhaps due to warm seawater at the discharge site. This study is the first to reveal an effect of effluent water on the aggregation of warm water fish species during winter.

We investigated yearly fluctuation of the fish species composition of beam trawls off Maemuldo in the east southern sea of Korea, from March 2007 to November 2009. A total of 75 fish species were collected during the period. The number of fish species accumulated amounted to 54, 64 and 75 species in 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. The number of newly occurring species increased with time. The number of expected resident species in Maemuldo was estimated as 9 species including Conger myrister, Okamejei kenojei and Pholis nebulosa, each of which appeared more than 14 out of a total 27 times. Cluster analysis showed that the years 2007 and 2008 were closely clustered, while the year 2009 was distantly clustered with 2007 and 2008. This may be due to the high catch ratio of Clidoderma asperrimum in 2009alone, when a low water temperature phenomenon was observed unlike the situation in 2007 and 2008.

Two major temperature fronts, the Subpolar (Gosung, Gang-won-do; 38°-41° N) and Thermal (Jukbyun, Gyeong-sang-buk-do; 36°-37° N) fronts, are found in the East Sea along the east coast of Korea. These are located roughly where the Tsushima Warm Current and North Korea Cold Current intersect. To clarify the effect of the Thermal Front, we investigated seasonal variation in fish species composition using set nets in two areas located north (Jangho, Gang-won-do) and south (Hupo, Gyeong-sang-buk-do) of Jukbyun, Gyeong-sang-buk-do, and compared the sea water temperature and salinity. We collected a total of 38 fish species in Hupo and 25 in Jangho. Trachurus japonicus was the most common species at both sites, but the subdominant species differed. At Hupo, the subdominant species were Konosirus punctatus and Diodon holocanthus, whereas Clupea pallasii and Scomber japonicus were subdominant at Jangho. Based on Froese and Pauly (2014), subtropical fishes accounted for 55% of fish in Hupo but only for 33% in Jangho. The difference in fish species composition was most obvious in May and August. According to the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration, sea surface temperature and salinity were slightly higher at Hupo than at Jangho. Our findings suggest that the oceanographic boundary resulting from the Thermal Front near Jukbyun, Gyeong-sang-buk- do may have a major effect on the distribution of migratory fish species.

This study aims to reveal the relationship between growth of young sea bass and environmental variables in two adjacent eelgrass beds. Fishes were collected from Gamak Bay (GB) and Yeoja Bay (YB) on the southern coast of Korea from February 2006 to February 2007 using a dragnet (15 m in length and 3 m in width). During the study period, a total of 367 individuals of young sea bass Lateolabrax japonicus were collected from GB (171 inds.) and YB (196 inds.). Significant differences were observed in the occurrence periods and growth patterns of young sea bass, as well as in environmental variables between GB and YB. Young sea bass were collected from April to December in GB, but from April to July in YB. These differences may be associated with differences in eelgrass density, leaf width, and zooplankton density between GB and YB.
한국 제주도에서 채집된 갈치꼬치과(Gempylidae) 어류 1 미기록종, Gempylus serpens
명세훈 ( Se Hun Myoung ),유정화 ( Jung Hwa Ryu ),김진구 ( Jin Koo Kim ) 한국어류학회 2013 韓國魚類學會誌 Vol.25 No.3
A single specimen (506 mm SL) of Gempylus serpens, belonging to the family Gempylidae, order Perciformes, was firstly collected from Jeju Island, Korea in April 2013. This specimen was characterized by having the lower jaw protruded than upper jaw; three big fangs on upper jaw; five dorsal finlets and seven anal finlets; two lateral lines split at the dorsal origin, upper line interrupted at the end of the first dorsal fin, but lower line extend to the caudal fin base. The new Korean name “Sejang-gal-chi-ggo-chi-sok” is proposed for the genus Gempylus, and “Se-jang-gal-chi-ggo-chi” for the species G. serpens.
