A photodetector is a device that converts a light signal into an electrical signal. Most transparent ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors are composed of metal oxide materials having a wide energy bandgap. Here, we manufactured a high-performance transparent photodetector that specifies the UV region using a heterojunction structure of a metal oxide (n-type ZnO/p-type NiO). In particular, ZnO and NiO are less harmful to the human body, have a chemically stable structure, and are low cost due to abundant reserves. Our device can be applied to various fields of photoelectric devices, including solar cells and photodetectors, and human electronics. Owing to the photovoltaic effect of the ZnO/NiO device, the transparent photodetector can be operated in self-powered mode. To verify the optimum operation, bias tuning was applied to investigate the device’s performances of response time and photocurrent. The characteristics of devices and their effects on electrical changes inside the device, including an increase in the depletion region, improvements in carrier collection and carrier velocity, and an increase in the electric field intensity, were analyzed by reverse bias.

N/A Objectives: We studied clinical feature, underlying disease and histo-pathologic finding of scleredema diabeticorum that was observed as non-pitting indurated edematous skin of the nape, occiput in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Methods: We performed clinico-histopathologic study in 5 cases of scleredema diabeticorum which were diagnosed at our hospital and reviewed 6 cases in Korean literatures. Results: 1) The male to female ratio was 4:1, The overweight or obese middle-aged (mean:54.6) males were prone to develop these cutaneous changes. There was no relationship between the development of diabetic scleredema and the duration, the severity of diabetes. Hypertension and hyperlipidemia were frequent associated finding among the patients. 2) The increased level of fasting C-peptide implicated that the ability of insulin secretion was preserved. 3) Non-pitting hardening of the skin on the nape, head and surrounding parts of the body was common skin change in all patients. No evidence of systemic involvements was found. 4) Typical histopathologic findings, consisted of the thickening of dermis, the degeneration of collagen bundles in mid- to deep dermis, and the deposition of acid mucopoleysaccharides, hyaluronic acid, were noted in 4 cases of our study. 5) The therapeutic responses of cutaneous changes were generally poor. Conclusion: These results implies that scleredema diabeticorum is not a rare cutaneous manifestation among the diabetic dermadromes, and special histopathologic stainings with skin tissue sections are necessary for diagnosis. Although the exact mechanisms of this disease are not known, and no effective therapy is available, it needs to be studied exactly that the facts of hyperlipidemia, overweight, hypertension and well-preservation of fasting C-peptide observed in our cases, may be related to syndrome-X.

Microalbuminuria is an early predictor of clinically significant diabetic nephropathy in people with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus(NIDDM) or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus(IDDM). In addition, microalbuminuria is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in NIDDM and diabetic proliferative retinopathy. Despite of considerable research, we still do not have a comprehensive explanation for the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. Although chronic hyperglycemia is almost certainly involved, it is not known whether the primary pathology is metabolic and microvascular, or an interaction between the two. The aim of the present study is to measure the peripheral nerve and autonomic nerve function in NIDDM patients in relation to degree of albuminuria, and assess the hypothesis that microalbuminuria could also be a marker of diabetic neuropathy. One hundred fifty-five subjects, 132 NIDDM subjects who attended Diabetic Clinic of Wonkwang University Hospital and 23 nondiabetic controls, were included in this study. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to their urinary albumin excretion, based on three kinds of samples during an observation period of at least 6 months such as <20 μg/min (normoalbuminuria). ≥20 but ≤200 μg/min(microalbuminuria), and >200 μg/min (macroalbuminuria). The Quantum model "Q84" was utilized for peripheral somatic neurologic test such as measured sural and peroneal nerve conduction velocities. Determination of autonomic nerve dysfunction was based on standardized battery of bedside tests(AUTOCAFT). Infrared portable pupillometry was used for measuring the pupil diameter. Urinary albumin excretion(UAE) was measured by radioimmunoassay. Hb A_1c was determined by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Retinopathy was assessed by fundoscopy. The results obtained are summerized as follows : 1) In the peripheral nerve examination, significant slowing of sural and peroneal nerve conduction velocity was observed in macro and microalbuminuria group compaired to control group. These results shows that peripheral neuropathy in the microalbuminuric group was considerably higher than that of control group. 2) In the examination of autonomic function, there was a significant decrease in respiratory sinus arrhythmia, lying and standing blood pressure respond to heart rate change, Valsalva ratio, autonomic score, arid pupil diameter in microalbuminuria group compaired to control group. And these results shows that autonomic neuropathy in the microalbuminuric group was considerably higher than that of control group. 3) There is an association between the aggravation of microalbuminuria and the advancement of somatic, and autonomic neuropathy in diabetic patients. Our data indicated that at the microalbuminuria stage, a significant peripheral somatic and autonomic dysfunction were already present. In conclusion, we have shown that diabetic neuropathy is associated with microalbuminuria. This association lends support to the theory of a vascular etiology for the peipheral and autonomic neuropathy of diabetes mellitus, and microalbuminuria could also be a marker of diabetic neuropathy.

Xanthomonas Maltophilia 에 의한 급성 화농성 갑상선염 1 예

        조정구,신봉주,최두환,소재범,유광현,김경년 대한내분비학회 1995 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.10 No.2

Acute thyroiditis(acute suppurative thyroiditis, bacterial thyroiditis, pyogenic thyroiditis) is an uncommon inflammatory disease, usually bacterial in orign, but may be fungi, parasitic organisms. A case of acute suppurative thyroiditis was reported and review of literature was made. A 51-year-old female noted pain and swelling of her neck. Cardinal physical finding on admission was enlargement of thyroid gland accompanied by tenderness and local heat. Diagnosis of acute suppurative thyroiditis was made by needle aspiration of the thyroid gland. The aspirated material showed inflammatory cells and follicular cells. In culture, Xanthomonas maltophilia was isolated. After antibiotics administration, she was discharged with improvement of tender enlargement of the thyroid gland(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 10: 131-135, 1995).

Bezafibrate 에 의해 유도된 횡문근 융해증 1 예

        조정구,신봉주,김경년,김형언,유남진 대한내분비학회 1994 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.9 No.1

The case is presented a 49-year-old man had several year history with chronic renal failure with hyperlipidemia due to diabetes mellitus. Treatment of hyperlipidemia was started by oral bezafibrate intake 600 mg per day. Several days later, patient noticed muscle weakness and myalgia. The serum CK, LDH, AST levels were remarkably elevated, myoglobulinuria was also noticed The symptoms of the patient were resolved after the drug was discontinued, thus the diagnosis was established as having bezafibrate induced rhabdomyolysis. On the basis of the above description, bezafibrate may induce muscle damage if dose is excess over the renal capacity. Extreme caution is warranted when the patient is placed on bezafibrate and has renal dysfunction. Strict dose adjustment is necessary in taking account of renal function to avoid muscle damage including rhabdomyolysis(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 9:50-53, 1994).

성인에서 고인슐린혈증성 저혈당을 보인 췌장내의 미만성 Nesidioblastosis 1예

        조정구,채권묵,서검석,윤기중,양광수,이승하,형근영,신봉주 대한내분비학회 1996 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.11 No.2

Nesidioblastosis is a term that describes multifocal hyperplasia of all panereatic cell components and is characterized primarily by their disorganization and proliferation throughout the entire pancreas. Adult onset nesidioblastosis is an extremely rare entity associated with hypersecretion of insulin. The authors have recently experienced a case of nesidioblastosis in an adult. A 41-year old man was admitted due to intermittent hypoglycemic symptoms, that had been relieved by carbohydrate ingestion. Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia was documented during prolonged fast. Under the presumptive diagnosis of insulinoma, abdominal CT, celiac angiogram and percutaneous transhepatic portal venous sampling were done but we could not find any definitive mass. Eight-five percent of the pancreas was removed. Pathologic examination of the resected pancreas revealed irregularly sized islets and scattering of small endocrine cell clusters throughout the acinar tissue and ductuloinsular complex(1 Kor Soc Endocrinol 11:247~253, 1996).
