Objective: There are a few reports and books that look upon the Damp Leg Gi as the beriberi and the polyneuritis. In this case, the patient who is suspected the DVT(Deep Vein Thrombosis), is treated by oriental medicine on the view of Damp Leg Gi, because of the clinical symptom. Methods: The patient was hospitalized Dept. of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Dong-Shin University from 18th, Oct. 2003 to 25th. Oct. 2003, and treated with Acupuncture therapy, Herbal medication, Depletion and cupping therapy and Oriental physical therapy. To evaluate the pain and edema of leg, Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and the measurement of leg circumstance are used. Results: 1. The circumstance of the affected leg is decreased from 2.5Cm to 1±0.5Cm. 2. VAS was decreased from 9-10 to 1-2. Conclusions: In this case, the patient who is suspected the DVT(Deep Vein Thrombosis) treated by oriental medicine without a surgical operation or west medication on the view of Damp Leg Gi.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of Sangyang(LI1) and Tae-baek(SP3) acupuncture by Yangdorack. Methods : 23 subjects were examined twice before and after acupuncture from April, 2005 to September, 2005 in Oriental Medical Hospital of Dong-Shin University. After we checked the electric current on twelve points of Yangdo, and analysed the results using SPSS(Version 11.0). Results & Conclusions : 1. The values of electric current are not significant, when sorted by body mass index(BMI). But underweight testee shows increased value of electric current on heart meridian. 2. There are no differences found between right value and left value on organic analysis. 3. The mean value is elevated by Sangyang(LI1) and Tae-baek(SP3) acupuncture, the value of bi(脾) organ is significantly elevated on p<0.05.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Yanghyuljanggeungunbo-tang(Yangxuezhuangjinjianbu-tang, YGKT) and electrical acupuncture treatment in spinal cord injury(SCI)-induced rats. Methods: The subjects were divided into 5 groups ; Normal, Control-no treatment after SCI, Experimental 1(Exp. 1)-taken with YGKT 500 ㎎/㎏ 0.5 ㎖ daily after SCI. Experimental 2(Exp. 2)-taken with electrical acupuncture after SCI and Experimental 3(Exp. 3)-taken with YGKT 500 ㎎/㎏ 0.5 ㎖ and electrical acupuncture after SCI. After each operation, the present author observed cytological changes, the motor behavior recovery and nerve regeneration by analysis of the motor behavior tests, EMG, hematological(AST, ALT, WBC), histological and immunological changes. Rats were tested by Motor behavior test at 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st day. Results: 1. All the experimental groups were improved compared with control group in the motor behavior tests including Tarlov test, Basso-Beattle-Bresnahan locomotor rating scale, modified inclined plane test, open field test, grid walk test and narrow beam test. Especially Exp. 3 was significantly improved among other groups. 2. In EMG test, H and M wave were significantly increased in Exp. 3. 3. All the experimental groups were significantly decreased compared with control group in AST, ALT and WBC. 4. NGF, BDNF and Trk B of spinal cord gray matter in all the experimental groups were increased compared with control group. Especially, Exp. 3 was more effective. 5. In histological observations, muscle contraction and denaturation of gastrocnemius muscle of all the experimental groups were inhibited. Especially, those of Exp. 3 was more effective. On the observations of liver and kidney, cell atrophy and apoptosis of all the experimental groups were decreased compared with control group. Especially, those of Exp. 3 was more effective. Conclusions: It can be suggested that YGKT and electrical acupuncture may improve motor behavior, EMG, hematological, histological and immunological findings in SCI-induced rats. Especially, combination of these two treatments will be somewhat better in spinal nerve recovery and motor function improvement.
Objectives : To evaluate and find out psychological characteristics of traffic accident(TA) patients who were diagnosed as sprain of C-spine and L-spine, and suffering from psychological disorder. Methods : 35 patients wrote out Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI). We divided them into four groups according to the type of TA - car to car and car to person, posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and sex. We sent medical records and MMPI reports to Dept. of Oriental Neuropsychiatry Medicine and asked who were PTSD patients. Results : 1-3/3-1 profile was found by total mean of T score of each MMPI scale in all patients. 1-3 profile was found in car to car and non-PTSD group. 3-1 profile was found in car to person and PTSD group. The difference was not valid by the type of TA, PTSD and sex(p<.05) except for the clinical scale of hysteria. Conclusions : The results indicate that MMPI characteristics of TA patients were generally 1-3/3-1 profile and patients who showed 3-1 profile must be treated more carefully because they were underlying PTSD patients.
Objectives: A patient with spinal cord injury(SCI) is poor at prognosis. He may suffer quadriplegia, sensory paralysis or be dead. This report is a case that a patient who gets an operation for reductions and unites of cervical vertebra between 6 and 7 with SCI, gains a recovery under the treatment of rehabilitation of Oriental medicine and supplementary Acupuncture Electrical Stimulation(AES). Methods: A patient was treated with Acupuncture therapy, Acupuncture electrical stimulation(AES), Herbal medication, Depletion and cupping therapy and Oriental physical therapy. To evaluate the pain of extremity, improvement of muscle strength and ability of usual behavior, Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), Modified Barthel Index(MBI) and Manual Muscle Testing(MMT) are used. Results: Frankel Scale was changed from C7C to C7D, MBI was increased from 15 point to 75point. and MMT was improved from grade 2>3 to grade 3>4 on upper limb and from grade 3 to grade 4>5. VAS about a pain of extremity was decreased from 10 to 3. At a time of discharge from hospital, He could walk for himself within 100m with cane but the functional disability of both hands and feet, and sensory disorder of both legs was remained. Conclusions: In this case, a patient was treated by general oriental medicine and supplementary AES on the view of flaccid paralysis of limb(Wi syndrome) and he got a wide improvement of general function.
Objectives: External or internal pressures on peripheral nerves may result in compression neuropathies. Although compressive common peroneal nerve palsy(CPN) is well known, very few cases with bilateral palsies have been reported. We report a 59-year-old housewife, with recent prolonged squatting, who developed acute bilateral common peroneal nerve palsy with bilateral foot-drop. Methods: We diagnosed her with nerve conduction studies(NCS) and electromyography(EMG), they were consistent with bilateral deep and superficial peroneal neuropathies, and treated her conservative maneuver as to oriental medical method. Results: Visual analogue scale is from 10 to 1. Space between the sole of the foot and floor is from 1/2 to 4/6. Conclusions: After treatment, she can do anything without discomfort, and easily flex her foot.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of fermented medicinal herbs. A search of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PubMed databases and Korean Journal of Oriental Medicine in 2000-2011 located 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the clinical efficacy of fermented medicinal herbs. Domestic RCTs reported clinical efficacy on improvement of immune responses and clinical safety on usage of fermented medicinal herbs in subjects suffering from cerebral hemodynamics. Countries other than Chinareported studies on the cause of esophageal cancer and on local inflammatory reactions. In China, studies were reported on the effectiveness of fermented medicinal herbs on scapulohumeral periarthritis of the stasis type, chronic superficial gastritis, dysuria induced by benign prostatic hyperplasia of deficiency of kidney yang, diabetic nephropathy, essential hypertension, and benign prostate hyperplasia. These results indicate that fermented medicinal herbs have obvious clinical effects in some diseases and no adverse reactions. Therefore, we need to initiate more fermentation research with useful bacteria, fungi, and mushrooms to produce fermented medicinal herbs. Both governments and research authorities should focus on research involving fermentation of medicinal herbs.
