As a new approach to analyze grinding energy, this paper introduces a specific grinding energy model based on the average grain. Using this model, grinding characteristics such as specific grinding energy of SM45C were investigated with changing variables such as grain size of CBN, workpiece velocity(v) and apparent depth of cut(Z) in down-surface grinding. From the experimental results, the specific grinding energy decreases as the maximum undeformed chip thickness increases.

As a new approach to analyze grinding characteristics, this paper introduces a specific grinding energy model based on the surface area of grain. Using this model, specific grinding energy were investigated with changing grinding variables. From the experimental results, the specific grinding energy is analyzed with both maximum undeformed chip thickness and grain size.

In order to determine the maximum undefonned chip thickness in grinding operation, the average successive cutting point spacing has been estimated using the given grinding input conditions. The validity of the proposed analysis has been verified by grinding scratch tests. Hardened SID11 steel has been ground using different sizes of grain. Specific energy consumed decreases with increase of the maximum undefonned chip thickness. Under the conditions yielding the same value of the maximum undeformed chip thickness, however, more specific energy was consumed with larger grain size.

In grinding processes, the maximum undeformed chip thickness is one of the most important parameters as in machining processes. Conventionally, in order to estimate the maximum undeformed chip thickness in grinding operation, it is necessary to obtain the successive cutting point spacing by experiments. Based on the material balance using average grain model, it is possible to estimate the maximum undeformed chip thickness without using any experimentally obtained data. The validity of the proposed analysis has been verified based on two sets of grinding scratch tests using W A and CBN grinding wheels.

In order to calculate the maximum undeformed chip thickness in grinding operation, it is necessary to estimate the successive cutting point spacing. In the past it is obtained by experiments. In this paper, the average successive cutting point spacing has been estimated using the given grinding input conditions.

Recently, the application of the high-speed, precision part in automobile is increasing with the developments of design and manufacturing technologies of machining center and cutting tools. And worm shaft manufacturing changed from rolling process to whirling cutting process for high precision cutting. For analysis whirling cutting characteristics and tool life, geometrical definition is necessary. This paper developed a new formulas based on equivalent undeformed chip thickness, undeformed chip section area simulated with cutting condition.
