Station for bimodal tram needs the space and facilities of appropriate size to provide passenger with safe and speedy boarding, comfortable and convenient service. And the site selection, type, arrangement of station by considering the characteristics and advantages of bimodal tram should be planned. In addition, station related facilities should be equipped to have an unique image in tune with planned lane and the region. Tram station"s installation type, arrangement and facilities were examined and the design method of station facilities and related system considering the characteristics of bimodal tram was suggested in this study.

To analyze the effect of temperature on pavement types of dedicated lane, we have performed a temperature monitoring for pavements which were constructed in test track for Bimodal Tram. These pavements classified into four types natural and artificial lawn, concrete and asphalt. Dedicated lane composed of natural and artificial lawn has a complex structure with concrete slab in contact surface of tires, and with 1m natural or artificial lawn in the middle part of lane. From monitoring results for pavements, dedicated lane with natural lawn shows lower temperature value compared with other dedicated lanes, and it is expected to decrease the heat island effect of conventional road if constructed.

As Bimodal Tram System(BTS) has never operated in Korea, the construction of test track is essential to the acquisition of safety for the passengers, to evaluate the performance test and the interface of each component of BTS. Therefore, test track is composed of vehicle, dedicated lane, elevated bridge, modular station, landscape facilities, integrated operation center, signalling and ITS facilities. Through continuous study and investigation, we anticipate the standard model for practical use of BTS as a basis of successful test-bed model.

Because of ease accessibility and general use in land/waterways, and transportation facility development costs, Tri-modal transportation system in overseas attracts attention. Conventional Bimodal tram’s concept extends to Tri-modal transportation system, which has characteristics of three modes, “railroad”, “road”, “waterway”. As this system can move without the installation of facilities such as bridges, the cost of development and maintenance of transportation facilities and traffic congestion can be reduced, and cut in time by the diversification of moving path can be expected. Especially, residents of coastal or island areas have a limited mobility right and have the discomfort of transfer because they can use only the ship if they will move to anywhere. In this study, we see the overseas development condition for Tri-modal transportation system and also review the technologies and regulations required when applying for the country and related effects.

Bimodal tram is a transit with no-step floor for wheel-chaired persons, with docking to the station precisely and moving on schedule like train. Because of the automatic traveling of bimodal tram to search and follow the magnet embedded in roadway, bimodal tram should be careful about rainfall, snow and wind like a car driving on roadway in respect to natural disasters. Though response procedures in emergency are different according to the passengers" boarding, emergency mobilization is needed if any emergency situation happens. Emergency mobilization is the act of preparing for major catastrophic events, which may affect public transportation systems or their service areas, by assembling and organizing resources, including people, equipment, facilities, communications systems, expert technical support, and public information systems and protocols. Mobilization is the process that ensures that the right people will deploy appropriate resources at the correct time. Effective mobilization requires a partnership of local and state agencies. Public transportation operators and systems play vital roles in response to and recovery from emergencies and other unexpected catastrophic events. These systems, and their capabilities to mobilize resources, are profoundly affected by the decisions and directives of others during these activities. In this study, we focused on the emergency management for bimodal tram and reviewed the considerations about infrastructures under natural disasters, especially heavy rainfall.

Urban flooding with surc㏊rges in sewer system was investigated because of unexpected torrential storm events these days, causing significant amounts of human and economic damages. Although there are limitations in forecasting and preventing natural disasters, integrated urban flooding management system using the SWMM(Storm Water Management Model) engine and Web technology will be an effective tool in securing safety in operating rubber-tired transportation system. In this study, the study area, located in Chuncheon, Kangwon province, was selected to evaluate the applicability of the SWMM model in forecasting urban flooding due to surc㏊rges in sewer system The catchment are 21.10 ㏊ in size and the average slope is 2% in lower flat areas. Information of subcatchment, conjunctions, and conduits was used as the SWMM interface to model surface runoff generation, water distribution through the sewer system and amount of water overflow. Through this study, the applicability of the SWMM for urban flooding forecasting was investigated and probability distribution of storm events module was developed to facilitate urban flooding prediction with forecasted rainfall amounts. In addition, this result can be used to the establishment of disaster management system for rainfall safety of rubber-tired tram in the future.

To analyze the settlement characteristics of short-fiber reinforced soil(SFRS), which will be used as a new backfill material of reinforced retaining wall, under simulated railroad loading, a series of tests with loading condition of 5 ㎐ frequency and 500,000 cycles were performed. The materials used for tests are soils with SM or ML type, and polypropylene short-fibers with mono-filament(PPM) or fibrillated type(PPF). From the tests, average plastic settlement is low at PPF38(0.3%)(abbreviation of PPF with 38㎜ length and mixing ratio 0.3%), PPF38(0.5%), PPM60(0.2%) for SFRS using SM soil and at PPF38(0.3%), PPF60(0.2%) for SFRS using ML soil. Elastic settlement is low at PPM60(0.2%) for SFRS using SM soil and at PPM60(0.5%) for SFRS using ML soil.

Regional torrential rains in summer this year due to abnormal climate changes compared to last year have been frequent. Since Typhoon Rusa and Typhoon Maemi resulted in major damage to railroad facilities in 2002 and 2003 consecutively problems with abnormal climate changes became a global problem including railroad and floods and droughts around the globe heavy snow and winter warming have been repeated until now. Serious problem of radiation leakage in Fukushima nuclear power plant by the Tsunami due to 9.0-scale earthquake this year in March in northeastern Japan happened and has given an impact on the life of Japanese citizens and industries and has also influenced on Korean. This shows how important to secure and to protect major national facilities including railroad structures to natural disasters such as earthquake. Therefore we will briefly discuss about technologies for securing and protecting railroad structures to earthquakes floods and other natural disasters.
