Vol.0 No.35

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the meanings of the lexeme down, which can be used in more than two functions without morphological change to reveal which concept is to be operated as the base during conversion. On zero-derivation analysis, the determination of the base among word pairs is restricted to a certain grammatical category, which brings about the problem of what part of speech should be chosen as the base form among multiple forms of a lexeme (e.g. down, like, round, etc.). As an attempt to solve this problem, I analyze the meanings of down in various parts of speech under the framework of Cognitive Grammar and extract an image schema of down functioning as a core meaning, which plays the role of the base in conversion. Although semantic values of down seem differently realized in various parts of speech, they implicitly share a core meaning as a parent concept triggering semantic extension. In this sense, this analysis not only enables us to capture the semantic relatedness of down in various parts of speech but also provides a cue to which is the base concept among items with multiple parts of speech.

Vol.27 No.11

The purpose of this research is to find out a solution for problems of current old waterway restoration projects in the down-town Seoul by theoretical analysis and case studies on the creation of a water-friendly village; lack of citizens’ interest, water management in summer and winter, cleaning of aqueducts and vandalism, etc. First, the concept on the creation of a water-friendly village was drawn from theoretical analysis on water-friendliness and Charrette. Cases on the creation of a water-friendly village were studied by academic documents, internet, etc. Particularly cases on the restoration of small streams in built-up areas were investigated. A restoration project for a small stream flowing through a small town can lead easily people’s interest. At last, a solution for problems of current old waterway restoration projects in the down-town Seoul was suggested in the point of the creation of a water-friendly village.

Vol.2009 No.26

Old roads have formed the spine of 600-year-long history and contained lots of historic memories. Seoul was decided as a new capital of Joseon dynasty and planned in 1394 by Planning Board and Construction Authority of New Capital and Palace. Accoding to Kaogongli, old symbolic roads were planned, such as Sejong-ro, Jong-ro, Namdaemun-ro. Meanwhile other old major roads were made along the streams from mountains surrounding Seoul and old alleys extended from major roads. On these old alleys, small villages developed. On the formation of old roads inside of the Seoul wall, the planning principles of Seoul are well reflected, which followed traditional city planning principles of old China and geographic features of Seoul. Therefore old roads are one of elements identifying the long history of Seoul. Under the slogan of modernization from the late 1960s, old, narrow and tortuous roads have been changed to new, broad and straight roads full of cars. However all trace of old roads does not disappear and alleys in North village, Bukcheon still show the traditional charms of Seoul. In the era of culture, what is conservable must be conserved based on the understanding of the historic values reflected on old roads inside of the Seoul wall. Respecting the historic values of place, what is creatively developable should be developed. This creative conservation can intensify the identity of Seoul and the improvement of cultural environment will increase the attractiveness of Seoul. For intensifying the historic identity of Seoul by conserving and restoring old roads, a 3-step-procedure can be suggested; understanding historic values of old roads, conserving and restoring old roads by active participation of neighbors and strong administrative supports, and creating the culture based on the stories of an old road and its surrounding region. However an old road can not be conserved and restored in a short-term. Even though the physical conservation and restoration of an old road is finished, its historic values must be steadily researched and understood by citizens and neighbors through web sites and diverse education programs. The historic circumstances on an old road should be also kept continuously by citizens and neighbors, after it is physically conserved and restored.

Vol.25 No.7

As self-governance system has settled down, citizen participation has been more active. Local governments make effort to encourage citizen participation by diverse methods. However most internet-based ones are limited to the young generation who can easily access to the information on the web. Even though people can get information in information centers, that is just focused on the specific projects. Here is proposed an urban planning gallery to inform citizens on diverse urban planning projects, help them to understand the necessity of urban planning and its various methods, and encourage citizen participation. Some guidances are suggested to design this urban planning gallery in the points of operation programs by analyzing experiences from not only the domestic but also the foreign cities, where urban planning information centers are built up and operated to give visitors diverse information services.

Vol.26 No.6

Mt. Namsan has been a symbolic element of Seoul, but its own feature has been destroyed by accident and by design since the late 19th century. To restore its ecological, historical, and recreational features, lots of project have been executed after the 1990's. Among them, it is pragmatically important to make easy access to Mt. Namsan, because Mt. Namsan is a central park of Seoul, where people stop the music in their busy urban lives for a while and can take a rest with cozy nature in the urban center. Here it was studied how to improve the accessibility to Mt. Namsan, based on the users' survey. According to the statistical analysis, travel time, traffic mode and stay time have grate influences on the accessibility to Mt. Namsan. Focusing on three variables, it was suggested how to reduce travel time in particular by Namsan circular bus, secure quiet pedestrian milieu especially against bikes, and attract visitors by diverse programs.

Vol.26 No.2

It was studied to find out the historical meaning of old roads and restore the historical images reflected on old roads. Storytelling and place marketing were defined and cases were analysed to investigate the restoration and conservation of historical meaning and images reflected on old roads by storytelling. To restore and conserve old roads by storytelling, first the own story of an old road should be created with elements concealed in the old road. Varied methods suitable for expressing this story should be introduced to attract the mind of residents and visitors. A bond of sympathy should be developed through communicating between residents, visitors and the old road.
