This case study presents a practical method to reduce resonant vibration of large vertical pumps. The pumps are driven at 400 rpm rated speed by induction motor. The vibration was not significantly large when operated at this rated speed. Large vibration was occurred when the pump was operated below the rated speed for flow control. Due to the large vibration resonance, variable speed operation of the pump was not possible for several months at worst cases. To find an efficient vibration control method, the flexural responses of pumps for both normal and transient operations were measured. The measured modal characteristics were compared with those of finite element analysis. When the pump was operated at a specific rpm, the natural mode whose resonance frequency is twice the rotating angular speed induced the large vibration. The retrofit utilizing stiffeners to reduce this resonant vibration were performed. Effects of designed stiffeners on reducing vibration were validated through tests after actual installation.

This case study refers to resonance with vertical pumps. Vibration problem occurring after the inverter was installed for speed control. Its problem was appeared any revolution under rated speed. Vibration data was acquired during normal operation and transient state. We examined FRF on its resonance in field and also analyzed a result by finite element method. There was carried out the retrofit in field which was based on these results for solving problem.

One of the most important things is to investigate and to resolve the resonance problem with vibration diagnostics for machinery and power plant equipment using CBM (Condition-based maintenance) within a short time and with low cost. The objective of this paper is to introduce the diagnosis technique for resonant machinery equipment using eccentricity shaker with mechanical unbalance mass. When comparing to impact hammer method, the results of natural frequency for measure objects such as machine structures and rotating machinery show good agreement within 3 % of variation. Through the experimental verification using the proposed vibration diagnosis, it is helpful and useful for site experts and practical engineers to evaluate the vibration resonance in fields. So, the use of eccentricity shaker is much more useful and available to investigate the natural frequency than the hammer impact.

Generator is the main equipment of a power plant that generates electric power. The line frequency is 60Hz, since that is operated at 3600rpm in fossil power plant. Therefore, the specific frequency 120Hz by the electromagnetic excitation force is generated inherently. If the looseness of stator at generator happens, abnormal sound that has 120Hz and the harmonic frequency is emitted from generator frame. In that case, binding of end-winding or re-wedging is needed for the reduction of sound level. In case of severe level of sound, belly band can be additionally installed at core. In this paper, the characteristics of generator sound is described and modal data is analyzed after installation of belly band.
