        Key Concepts in Vygotsky's Theoretical Framework: L2 Classroom Interaction and Research

        The role of interaction in second language (L2) classrooms has been examined from different angles, ranging from early studies of foreigner talk to the studies of the teacher- and task-based talk. However, most of the research on L2 classroom interaction has been based on a traditional psycholinguistic view of language and learning, failing to reconceptualize a broad and holistic understanding of L2 learning. Currently, many researchers have attempted to explore and describe classroom interaction in L2 classrooms from a sociocultural perspective. The purpose of this paper is to discuss Vygotsky's theoretical framework in terms of L2 classroom interaction and research from a sociocultural perspective, by describing three key concepts (zone of proximal development, private speech, and activity theory) in Vygotsky's theoretical framework and relating them to L2 classroom interaction. The results demonstrated the importance of social interaction for second language acquisition with the review of the related research study. It was also suggested that the dynamic and interactive processes of second language learning in the classroom should be valued by L2 researchers as well as L2 teachers. Finally, implications for the concepts for L2 classroom research and pedagogy are presented in the conclusion.

        원어민 영어수업에서 느끼는 학습동기, 불안감, 의사소통 의지와 영어성적과의 관계

        This study examines correlations between affective variables and English learners’ achievement in native teachers’ classes. Specifically, it aims to study the relationships among Korean college students’ English learning motivation, anxiety, WTC (willingness to communicate) and their English achievement scores. For the purpose, the questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the students’ English scores were analyzed and compared. The participants were 216 university students taking the general English courses as a requirement for graduation. The results indicated that although the students had high level motivation to learn English, especially for social reasons, their WTC in and outside the classroom was low. Also, unlike the previous studies on foreign language anxiety, their anxiety level was not significant. Anxiety and motivation were negatively correlated; WTC and motivation were positively correlated. However, according to the regression analysis, the explanatory power of the three affective variables was not significant for the students’ achievement scores. Several possible reasons and some pedagogical implications are provided in the conclusion.

        멀티미디어 활용 영어수업 사례 연구

        The purpose of the present study is to examine the effectiveness of an online TOEIC course, as a case study of incorporating multimedia technology into general college English classes. The study also aims to explore students' opinions about online TOEIC and learning experiences. For the purpose, a questionnaire survey complemented with qualitative interviews was conducted. The students' pre-test and post-test scores were also compared. The findings show that the online TOEIC course is not satisfactory based on the students' responses, although there are statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores. Possible reasons are explained, and pedagogical implications are provided on how to utilize multimedia technology for effective English instruction.

        공연예술상품 속성과 기대혜택에 대한 공연예술 전문가와 소비자의 인식 차이 비교

        본 연구는 공연예술상품의 속성과 기대혜택에 대한 전문가와 소비자의 인식을 비교하고자 하였다. 우선 델파이기법을 활용하여 공연예술 작품을 제작하는데 직·간접적으로 연관되어 있는 전문가들을 대상으로 하여 소비자들이 공연예술상품을 선택하는데 있어서 중요하게 생각하는 속성과 상품을 통해 얻고자 하는 기대혜택에 대한 의견을 조사하였다. 이와 더불어 전문가 조사결과와 선행연구를 토대로 구성된 공연예술 상품의 속성과 기대혜택에 대한 설문항목에 대하여 일반 소비자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 조사결과 “공연작품의 내용”, “공연장의 위치”, “티켓 가격”, “스트레스 해소”, “삶의 질 향상” 등이 전문가와 소비자 모두에게 중요하다고 나타났다. 반면에 소비자와 비교하여 전문가들은 “출연진의 명성”, “예술가의 기량”, “공연장 인지도 및 공연단체 명성”, “공연장의 위치”, “대중매체 홍보”, “자아실현”을 중요한 것으로 인식하고 있어 일부 항목들에 대하여 전문가들이 소비자들의 요구를 과대평가하고 있음을 알 수 있다. The main objective of this study was to identify the difference in the perceptions of the product attributes and the expected benefits for consumers and professionals in the performing arts industry. First, the Delphi method by using email and telephone was used to explore the professionals perceptions of the attributes of performing arts and the expected benefits. Second, on-line consumer survey was used to explore the consumer perceptions of the attributes of performing arts and the expected benefits. Finally, this study tried to draw some difference of perceptions from both professionals and consumers. Contents of the arts, location of a theater, ticket price, relief of stress, and improvement of lifestyle were found to be commonly important factors for both parties. Among them, statistical differences between two groups were confirmed in the factors such as the reputations of the cast members and theatres, locations of theatres, and time duration of a performance.

        인터넷 환경에서의 포트폴리오 활용 영어 수업

        The purpose of this study is two-fold. Firstly, it is to examine the perceived effectiveness of using portfolio in the Internet environment. Secondly, it is to explore students' opinions about online English materials and learning experiences. For the purpose, a questionnaire survey complemented with qualitative interviews was conducted. The participants were 211 university students taking the general English courses as a requirement for graduation. The findings show that unlike the expectation, use of portfolio in the internet environment is not effective to teach the general English courses. It has been also found that the students are not satisfied with such courses due to the failure to provide the necessary condition for an effective use of portfolio in the language classes. Based on the findings, the study argues that for the use of portfolio in the internet environment to be effective, it must be practiced in the right condition. Some pedagogical implications are provided on how to incorporate the internet into college EFL classes.

        참가 학생들이 인지하는 초등 영어캠프 몰입프로그램에 대한 학습효과와 흥미도

        The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects and interest of English programs during an elementary English camp at a local university in Busan. The English camp was held for three weeks during the summer vacation, and 86 elementary school students from 3rd grade to 6th grade participated. The data for this study were collected from the entrance and exit survey questionnaires from the students. The results of this study showed that the English camp had positive effects on the students' English learning and communicative competence in English. Generally, the students were strongly satisfied with the immersion program and their interest in studying English had increased. However, several negative effects were found in the dormitory English immersion program because of after-school activities. Possible reasons and pedagogical suggestions for more effective English immersion programs during the elementary English camp were provided.

        대학 원어민교수들의 의사소통중심 접근법(CLT)에 대한 인식과 교수활동 연구

        In spite of the growing number of native English teachers in Korea, elatively little research has been conducted on their perspectives about communicative language teaching(CLT) and classroom practices in colleges or universities. The purpose of this study was to investigate native English teachers`` perceptions about CLT and to identify their instructional practices in Korea. For the purpose, questionnaire surveys were distributed to 26 native English instructors at a 4 year university in Busan. A total of 180 students who were taking General English courses taught by the native English teachers were also participated in the survey. The results showed that native English instructors had difficulty in employing communicative language teaching because of several constraints such as students`` reluctance to participate in class, mixed levels, and communication difficulty with students. Based on the findings of the study, a few suggestions were made for native English instructors`` effective CLT implementation in Korea.

        어린이 공연예술에서 공연장 환경속성이 아동소비자 만족도에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 어린이를 위한 공연예술에서 공연장 환경 속성이 아동소비자 만족도에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 전라북도 전주시에 위치한 한국소리문화의전당에서 공연된 어린이 공연을 관람한 어린이 관객의 부모나 대리인 149명의 설문지를 분석하여 자녀들이 지각하는 공연장 환경속성과 아동소비자만족도를 조사하였다. 공연장 환경속성 요인들을 분류하기 위해 요인분석을 실시하였으며, 아동소비자 만족도에 미치는 공연장 환경속성의 영향력을 파악하기 위하여 SPSS 12.0 프로그램을 이용하여 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 요인분석 결과 환경속성은 공연관람 편의성, 부대시설 이용편의성, 공연장 매력성, 공연장 접근 편리성, 고객관리, 직원서비스 신뢰성, 공연상품 신뢰성 등 7개의 요인으로 분류되었다. 회귀분석 결과 직원서비스 신뢰성, 공연상품 신뢰성, 공연장 매력성이 만족도에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로 아동소비자의 만족도를 높이기 위해서는 관객이 선호하는 작품을 공연하는 것이 중요할 뿐만 아니라, 직원들의 교육을 통해 아동소비자가 원하는 바를 친절하고 신속하게 제공할 필요가 있음을 의미한다. 또한, 아동소비자의 관심을 끌 수 있도록 공연장의 시설물들을 설치하거나 개선하는 것이 공연관람시 아동소비자의 만족도 제고에 기여할 수 있을 것이다. The objective of this research is to study the effect of the environments of a performance center on the level of customers` satisfaction in performing arts, especially for children. Parents and guardians were surveyed to collect data. To explain the relationship between customer satisfaction and its related factors, factor analysis and multiple regression analysis were applied by using SPSS. According to the factor analysis, seven factors were established; (1) comfort during performance, (2) convenience facilities in the center, (3) attractiveness of the center, (4) accessibility to the center, (5) membership programs, (6) service by staff members, and (7) quality of programs. Then the results tested by multiple regression analyses present that the quality of programs, the service by staff members, and the attractiveness of the center make statistically meaningful impact on the level of customers` satisfaction from performing arts for children. The results of this study imply that service by staff members and appearance of the center and the quality of the performance should be improved in order to improve the level of customer`s satisfaction.

        영어 학습자 코퍼스 기반 어휘다발의 구조적 패턴과 기능적 유형 분석

        This corpus-based study is to analyze English lexical bundles in three learner corpora using Wordsmith 6.0. Specifically, this paper is to explore the frequency, structural patterns, and functional types of the extracted bundles in both native and non-native speakers’ English writing. To extract automatically the most frequent 4-word lexical bundles from the corpora, the cluster program was utilized. The results showed that 1) in terms of frequency, non-native speakers used prompt bundles repeatedly other than native speakers; 2) native and non-native speakers’ use of structural patterns was remarkably different; 3) from the perspective of functional types, non-native speakers used more stance bundles than native speakers did. Pedagogical implications and limitations of the study were provided. More research about lexical bundles are required for deeper analysis of native and non-native English learner corpus and English variety.

        대학생들의 영어학습 신념과 영어성취도 점수와의 관계분석

        The purpose of the study was to identify college students’ beliefs about English learning and to investigate the relationship between learners’ beliefs and their English achievement scores. It also examines their beliefs and achievement scores in terms of gender. For the purpose, questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the students’ TOEIC scores were analyzed and compared. The participants were 149 university students taking the summer intensive TOEIC course. Major findings of the study were as follows: First, most of the students think learning English is difficult. They also recognized the importance of culture and vocabulary for English learning, with more emphasis on fluency rather than accuracy, Moreover, students have more instrumental motivation than integrative motivation for learning English. In terms of learning belief and their achievement scores, there were no statistical differences between male and female students. However, their beliefs and achievement scores were found to be related. Pedagogically, it has been suggested that EFL teachers should be aware of students’ beliefs about English learning, such as the difficulty of language learning and communication strategies, for more effective instructional design. Suggestions for further research and limitation of the study are provided in the conclusion.
