          Key Concepts in Vygotsky's Theoretical Framework: L2 Classroom Interaction and Research

          The role of interaction in second language (L2) classrooms has been examined from different angles, ranging from early studies of foreigner talk to the studies of the teacher- and task-based talk. However, most of the research on L2 classroom interaction has been based on a traditional psycholinguistic view of language and learning, failing to reconceptualize a broad and holistic understanding of L2 learning. Currently, many researchers have attempted to explore and describe classroom interaction in L2 classrooms from a sociocultural perspective. The purpose of this paper is to discuss Vygotsky's theoretical framework in terms of L2 classroom interaction and research from a sociocultural perspective, by describing three key concepts (zone of proximal development, private speech, and activity theory) in Vygotsky's theoretical framework and relating them to L2 classroom interaction. The results demonstrated the importance of social interaction for second language acquisition with the review of the related research study. It was also suggested that the dynamic and interactive processes of second language learning in the classroom should be valued by L2 researchers as well as L2 teachers. Finally, implications for the concepts for L2 classroom research and pedagogy are presented in the conclusion.

          블렌디드 러닝을 활용한 영작문 수업 사례 연구

          With the growing interest in computer technology, blended learning has been widely employed in the field of English teaching. The purpose of this study is to examine college students' perceptions about computer technology and English learning to maximize the benefits of online and offline classes. It also investigates students' perceptions about the effectiveness of the blended writing course which integrates online and offline instruction for a semester. In terms of students' attitudes about computer technology and English learning, there were no significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores. Although the students showed positive perceptions about the effectiveness of the blended course, their writing improvement was not significant compared with other English skills. According to open-ended answers, the overall positive outcome was contributed not by the online class but by the offline class.

          원어민 영어수업에서 느끼는 학습동기, 불안감, 의사소통 의지와 영어성적과의 관계

          This study examines correlations between affective variables and English learners' achievement in native teachers' classes. Specifically, it aims to study the relationships among Korean college students' English learning motivation, anxiety, WTC (willingness to communicate) and their English achievement scores. For the purpose, the questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the students' English scores were analyzed and compared. The participants were 216 university students taking the general English courses as a requirement for graduation. The results indicated that although the students had high level motivation to learn English, especially for social reasons, their WTC in and outside the classroom was low. Also, unlike the previous studies on foreign language anxiety, their anxiety level was not significant. Anxiety and motivation were negatively correlated; WTC and motivation were positively correlated. However, according to the regression analysis, the explanatory power of the three affective variables was not significant for the students' achievement scores. Several possible reasons and some pedagogical implications are provided in the conclusion.

          참가 학생들이 인지하는 초등 영어캠프 몰입프로그램에 대한 학습효과와 흥미도

          The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects and interest of English programs during an elementary English camp at a local university in Busan. The English camp was held for three weeks during the summer vacation, and 86 elementary school students from 3rd grade to 6th grade participated. The data for this study were collected from the entrance and exit survey questionnaires from the students. The results of this study showed that the English camp had positive effects on the students' English learning and communicative competence in English. Generally, the students were strongly satisfied with the immersion program and their interest in studying English had increased. However, several negative effects were found in the dormitory English immersion program because of after-school activities. Possible reasons and pedagogical suggestions for more effective English immersion programs during the elementary English camp were provided.

          멀티미디어 활용 영어수업 사례 연구

          The purpose of the present study is to examine the effectiveness of an online TOEIC course, as a case study of incorporating multimedia technology into general college English classes. The study also aims to explore students' opinions about online TOEIC and learning experiences. For the purpose, a questionnaire survey complemented with qualitative interviews was conducted. The students' pre-test and post-test scores were also compared. The findings show that the online TOEIC course is not satisfactory based on the students' responses, although there are statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores. Possible reasons are explained, and pedagogical implications are provided on how to utilize multimedia technology for effective English instruction.

          영어 학습자 코퍼스 기반 어휘다발의 구조적 패턴과 기능적 유형 분석

          This corpus-based study is to analyze English lexical bundles in three learner corpora using Wordsmith 6.0. Specifically, this paper is to explore the frequency, structural patterns, and functional types of the extracted bundles in both native and non-native speakers' English writing. To extract automatically the most frequent 4-word lexical bundles from the corpora, the cluster program was utilized. The results showed that 1) in terms of frequency, non-native speakers used prompt bundles repeatedly other than native speakers; 2) native and non-native speakers' use of structural patterns was remarkably different; 3) from the perspective of functional types, non-native speakers used more stance bundles than native speakers did. Pedagogical implications and limitations of the study were provided. More research about lexical bundles are required for deeper analysis of native and non-native English learner corpus and English variety.

          인터넷 환경에서의 포트폴리오 활용 영어 수업

          The purpose of this study is two-fold. Firstly, it is to examine the perceived effectiveness of using portfolio in the Internet environment. Secondly, it is to explore students' opinions about online English materials and learning experiences. For the purpose, a questionnaire survey complemented with qualitative interviews was conducted. The participants were 211 university students taking the general English courses as a requirement for graduation. The findings show that unlike the expectation, use of portfolio in the internet environment is not effective to teach the general English courses. It has been also found that the students are not satisfied with such courses due to the failure to provide the necessary condition for an effective use of portfolio in the language classes. Based on the findings, the study argues that for the use of portfolio in the internet environment to be effective, it must be practiced in the right condition. Some pedagogical implications are provided on how to incorporate the internet into college EFL classes.

          대학생들의 영어학습 신념과 영어성취도 점수와의 관계분석

          The purpose of the study was to identify college students' beliefs about English learning and to investigate the relationship between learners' beliefs and their English achievement scores. It also examines their beliefs and achievement scores in terms of gender. For the purpose, questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the students' TOEIC scores were analyzed and compared. The participants were 149 university students taking the summer intensive TOEIC course. Major findings of the study were as follows: First, most of the students think learning English is difficult. They also recognized the importance of culture and vocabulary for English learning, with more emphasis on fluency rather than accuracy, Moreover, students have more instrumental motivation than integrative motivation for learning English. In terms of learning belief and their achievement scores, there were no statistical differences between male and female students. However, their beliefs and achievement scores were found to be related. Pedagogically, it has been suggested that EFL teachers should be aware of students' beliefs about English learning, such as the difficulty of language learning and communication strategies, for more effective instructional design. Suggestions for further research and limitation of the study are provided in the conclusion.

          영어교육 자료로서 광고의 활용 : 모의수업 연구

          The purpose of the present study is to examine the effectiveness of a preliminary study of utilizing advertising English for instructional materials. The study also aims to explore students' opinions about English advertisements as authentic materials for EFL instruction. For the purpose, an experiment along with a questionnaire survey was conducted. In terms of control group and experimental group, the students' pre-test and post-test scores were also compared. The findings show that there are statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores. Moreover, advertising English is useful for enhancing students' interests in EFL classes and gaining understanding of American cultures. Based on the study results, positive and negative aspects of employing advertisements for EFL instruction and the instructor's important role in selecting and utilizing appropriate materials are discussed. Finally, pedagogical implications are provided on how to employ English advertisements for effective Enlish instruction.

          예비교사를 위한 영문학 활용 창의융합 영어수업 사례 연구: 뉴베리 수상작을 중심으로

          This study aims to develop creativity and convergence competency of pre-service teachers who are going to practice 2015 Revised National Curriculum. The subjects are college students who are taking a course titled, “Creativity and Convergence Instruction in English Education” offered in the Department of English Education. The course is designed to improve the students' communicative competence in English as well as creativity and convergence competency employing Newbery Award texts. As a pre-service teacher, the student conducted a micro-teaching after cooperative development of English teaching materials based on the Newbery texts. According to the survey questionnaire administered after the course, the subjects' perceived effectiveness of the course was positive due to the development of creativity by participating various activities in the learner-centered class. This study has significance as a case study that suggested a lesson model for the development of creativity and convergence in the Korean English classroom.
