권순운,김병하 한국특수교육문제연구소 2004 특수교육저널 : 이론과 실천 Vol.5 No.1
The deaf is made up of one's own unique culture because communication problems interrupt to mainstream into general society. When the coworker or man in company couldn't have understood their characteristics or communicated one another successfully, it brought problems to successful career adjustment. Based on H company case in Ulsan, this study researches how they control the essential elements of a job - understanding direction, a wage level, working conditions, working environment. level of incidental facilities, personal relationship - what kinds of condition they satisfy from the company, whether they leave it or not, and it is meaningful to draw up a plan about the career adjustment of a person with hearing problem.

Urethral stone may from primarily in the urethra or may migrate from the bladder or upper urinary tract. Primary urethral calculi usually are associated with chronic stasis and infection. Virtually all urethral stone in women have been found in a urethral diveniculum. The diagnosis may be confirmed by palpation, endoscopic visualizatlon, or radiographic study. Treatment should be directed by the underlying cause. Herein, we reported a case of giant bulbous urethral stone in 55-year-old men, with a brief review of literature. Key Words: Stone, Bulbous urethra.

Previously, we have reported that two clustered cat genes from Acenitobacter lwoffii K24 had different arrangements, catB₁C₁A₁ and catB₂A₂C₂ (Kim, S.I., S.-H. Leem, J.-S. Choi,Y.H.Chung, S.Kim,Y.-M.Park, Y.K.Park, Y.N.Lee, and K.-S.Ha.1997,J.Bacteriol.179,5226-5231). By further analysis of the organization of the cat1 gene ciuster, we obtained a complete sequence of the catB₁ gene, which encoded 40.8-kDa polypeptide containing 379 amino acids, and found a open reading frame (ORF) coding a putative regulatory protein in upstream region of catB₁ on plasmid pCD1-1. This ORF encoded 34.2-kDa polypeptide containing 379 amino acids and had more than 40% identity with catR, LysR family regulatory protein of Pseudomonas putida. RT-PCR, Northern blot analysis and primer extension assay for transcriptional analysis of the cat1 gene cluster revealed that the catB₁C₁ genes were cotranscribed and the catA₁ gene was independently transcribed.

Background/Aims: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are up-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To investigate the levels of COX-2 and VEGF expression in chronic hepatitis (CH), cirrhosis, and HCC. Methods: The immunohistochemical expressions of COX-2 and VEGF were evaluated in tissues from patients with CH (n=95), cirrhosis (n=38), low-grade HCC (LG-HCC; n=6), and high-grade HCC (HG-HCC; n=29). Results: The COX-2 expression scores in CH, cirrhosis, LG-HCC, and HG-HCC were 3.3±1.9 (mean±SD), 4.2±1.7, 5.5±1.0, and 3.4±2.4, respectively (CH vs. cirrhosis, P=0.016; CH vs. LG-HCC, P=0.008; LG-HCC vs. HG-HCC, P=0.004), and the corresponding VEGF expression scores were 0.9±0.8, 1.5±0.7, 1.8±0.9, and 1.6±1.1 (CH vs. cirrhosis, P<0.001; CH vs. LGHCC, P=0.011; LG-HCC vs. HG-HCC, P=0.075). Both factors were correlated with the fibrosis stage in CH and cirrhosis (COX-2: r=0.427, P<0.001; VEGF: r=0.491, P<0.001). There was a significant correlation between COX-2 and VEGF in all of the tissue samples (r=0.648, P<0.001), and between high COX-2 and VEGF expression scores and survival (COX-2: P=0.001; VEGF: P<0.001). Conclusions: The expressions of both COX-2 and VEGF are significantly higher in cirrhosis and LG-HCC than in CH. High COX-2 and high VEGF expressions are associated with a high survival rate. Background/Aim: The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is affected by stage as well as liver function. We analyzed the outcome of early stage HCC in Child-Pugh class C patients and advanced HCC in Child-Pugh class A patients. Methods: Among 453 HCC patients, group I included consecutive 33 patients with early stage (I,II) in Child-Pugh class C and Group II included 45 consecutive patients with advanced stage (III, IV) in Child-Pugh class A. We compared clinical characteristics, complications of cirrhosis, overall survival between two groups. Results: Younger age, male, presence of HBV, α-fetoprotein (AFP) (>400ng/ml), and MELD score (<15) were significantly high in advanced stage HCC in Child-Pugh class A patients (Group II) (p<0.05). Complications of cirrhosis such as variceal hemorrhage, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy were increased in the Group I (p<0.05). Median overall survival was 24.5 months (95% CI 10.6-38.4) for Group I and 13.5 months (95% CI 4.6-22.3) for Group II (p=0.281). AFP was an independent prognostic factor in early stage in Child-Pugh class C patients (Group I). MELD score and tumor stage were independent prognostic factors in advanced stage in Child-Pugh class A patients (Group II). Conclusion: Overall survival was not different between two groups. AFP was a prognostic factor in early stage in Child-Pugh class C patients (Group I), whereas MELD score and tumor stage were prognostic factors in advanced stage in Child-Pugh class A patients (Group II).

This qualitative research is to explore how American adolescents perceive, interpret and understand Doggy Poo, which is a translated Korean picture book. This research started with three questions to be resolved. 1) How American adolescent readers appreciate Doggy Poo? 2) How do cultural backgrounds affect American adolescents’ responses on Doggy Poo? 3) How do American adolescents transform their prior thoughts in order to accommodate new thoughts and knowledge that Doggy Poo implies? These questions will be dealt with through out the research. Results found follow as below. All of the participants had agreed that the Doggy Poo have great messages and lessons. However, they contended that there are some aspects of something strange or weird to American adolescents. We found that the strangeness or weirdness felt by the participants was largely due to the main character who is a literally dog’s poop. Especially, some of participants who have Indian cultural backgrounds were bothered by use of doggy poo as main character and Christian orientation based on their cultural value-laden interpretation. That kind of cultural backgrounds seemed to affect their appreciation of Doggy Poo. Throughout the research, participants found themselves transformed by being touched by great messages of the story and their perspectives changed. They experienced ‘reading beyond cultural barriers.’ Before starting this research, there was an assumption that cultural differences between Korean and American may prevent American readers from understanding the themes and messages of the book that the author intended to portray and Korean readers receive when reading the book. Contrary to the assumption, most participants understood the theme and message of the book and appreciated its greatness as a children’s book. Some students have felt some disturbances or cultural shock due to cultural differences. In spite of that, they could read great messages that Doggy Poo provides beyond cultural barriers. This study asks us look into our assumptions about text, culture, readers, and reading. We could see the transforming powers that the Kwon Jung-Saeng’s honorable story, Doggy Poo has. One of the most important things for translated Korean books is themes and messages based on the condition that translation is well done. There is little barrier of cultural backgrounds that prevent the foreign readers from understanding if the translated Korean books have powerful messages and themes. This research suggests that educators or researchers should take into account cultural diversities of readers in other countries as well because there are many subcultural groups different from mainstreams even though they are regarded as a same group in terms of nationality. To get better readers to read translated Korean books and understand well, educators and researchers should consider cultural/social/personal backgrounds of readers as “linguistic experiential reservoirs” (Rosenblatt, 1985;2004) and try to provide more dialogical and collaborative contexts for the reading events.
