A digital readout IC for capacitive sensors is presented. Digital capacitance readout circuits suffer from static capacitance of sensors, especially single-ended sensors, and require large passive elements to cancel such DC offset signal. For this reason, to maximize a dynamic range with a small die area, the proposed circuit features digital filters having a coarse and fine compensation steps. Moreover, by employing switched-capacitor circuit for the front-end, correlated double sampling (CDS) technique can be adopted to minimize low-frequency device noise. The proposed circuit targeted 8-kHz signal bandwidth and oversampling ratio (OSR) of 64, thus a $3^{rd}$-order ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator operating at 1 MH was used for pulse-density-modulated (PDM) output. The proposed IC was designed in a 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS mixed-mode process, and occupied $0.86{\times}1.33mm^2$. The measurement results shows suppressed DC power under about -30 dBFS with minimized device flicker noise.

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P><B>Background</B></P><P>The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of alpha lipoic acid (α-LA) on a porcine in-stent restenosis (ISR) model.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>In protocol 1, porcine vascular smooth muscle cells (PVSMC) were stimulated by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the presence or absence of α-LA. MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl] 2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay and western blotting were used to determine the cell growth inhibitory rate and anti-inflammatory effect associated with nuclear factor-κb (NF-κb) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). In protocol 2, 28 days after balloon overdilation injuries, 24 bare metal stents were placed in coronary artery of 12 pigs. The pigs were randomly divided to receive control diet with or without α-LA (100mg/kg). In protocol 3, 8 control stents and 8 α-LA coated stents were randomly implanted in 2 coronary arteries of 8 pigs and follow-up coronary angiogram and histopathologic assessment were performed 4 weeks after stenting.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Protocol 1. The proliferation of PVSMC was inhibited and protein expression of NF-κb and ERK were attenuated by α-LA pretreatment. Protocol 2<I>.</I> On histopathologic analysis, the neointimal area (4.0±1.0mm<SUP>2</SUP> vs. 1.5±0.7mm<SUP>2</SUP>, <I>p</I><0.001) and histopathologic area of stenosis (66.7±10.7% vs. 24.2±9.7%, <I>p</I><0.001) were reduced in the α-LA feeding group compared to controls. Protocol 3. On histopathologic analysis, the neointimal area (3.9±0.8mm<SUP>2</SUP> vs. 1.0±0.4mm<SUP>2</SUP>, <I>p</I><0.001), and the histopathologic area of stenosis (67.1±8.8% vs. 17.4±10.0%, <I>p</I><0.001) were reduced in the α-LA coated stent group compared to the control stent group.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>α-LA feeding and α-LA coated stents inhibit neointimal hyperplasia in porcine ISR, possibly through inhibiting the activation of NF-κb pathway and proliferation of PVSMC.</P>

In this work, the current limiting and recovery characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with series connection of two coils were effectively improved by adding a third winding into the conventional flux-lock type SFCL with series connection of two coils. To confirm the contribution of the third winding to the current limiting and recovery characteristics of this type of the SFCL, short-circuit testing was carried out with consideration of the third winding, and the effect of the third winding on the current limiting and recovery characteristics was examined by comparative analysis of the amplitude of the limited fault current and the power burden of the high-TC superconducting (HTSC) element comprising the SFCL. Through the analysis of both the limiting impedance and the operational current as the main design parameter of the SFCL, the improved current limiting and recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using the third winding could be verified.
Predictors of Suicidal Ideation in People with Epilepsy Living in Korea

<P><B>Background and Purpose</B></P><P>The risk of suicide or suicide attempts is reported higher in people with epilepsy (PWE) than in the general population. Although epileptic, psychiatric, and psychosocial factors are known risk factors for suicide or suicide attempt, no studies have evaluated the predictors of the severity of suicidal ideation-which is a warning sign for suicide attempts-in PWE. Therefore, we measured the severity of suicidal ideation and its risk factors.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Consecutive PWE who were medicated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and attended epilepsy clinic were included in the study. The subjects completed self-reported questionnaires, which included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and Scale for Suicide Ideation-Beck (SSI-Beck). We compared the patients' demographic and clinical variables, and BDI, BAI, and SCL-90-R scores with their SSI-Beck score, and used our findings to determine the predictors for suicidal ideation.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>In total, 257 PWE were enrolled in the study. SSI-Beck scores correlated strongly with several seizure-related variables, duration of education, IQ, BDI and BAI scores, and nine domains of the SCL-90-R questionnaire. However, the strongest predictor for suicidal ideation was BDI score (β=0.41, <I>p</I><0.001), followed by several SCL-90-R domains, such as obsessive-compulsive (β=-0.39, <I>p</I><0.001), depression (β=0.38, <I>p</I><0.001), hostility (β=0.22, <I>p</I>=0.002), paranoid ideation (β=0.17, <I>p</I>=0.01), and IQ (β=-0.10, <I>p</I>=0.017). These variables explained 59% of the variance in the SSI-Beck score. The seizure-related variables that influenced the BDI score were seizure frequency, duration of education, MRI abnormality, and number of AEDs. However, these variables explained only 18% of the variance in the BDI score.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Major risk factors for suicidal ideation in PWE were depressive and psychiatric symptoms rather than seizure-related variables. Therefore, clinicians should focus on screening for depression and other psychiatric problems and treat them appropriately in order to reduce suicidal behavior in PWE. Since seizure-related variables also exhibited a minor role in determining depressive symptoms, stronger seizure-related risk factors for depression should be sought, such as seizure severity or psychosocial factors, to minimize suicidal behavior.</P>
Characterization of CBF/DREB1 Gene Family in Brassica rapa

The C-repeat/dehydration-responsive element binding transcription factors (CBF/DREBs) are involved in an important pathway for abiotic stress-response in plants. We have identified CBF/DREB1 gene family from Brassica rapa whole genome sequence and designated them as BrDREB1s. They contain conserved nucleus localization signal, AP2/EREBP domain, and CBF/DREB1 signature, as other known plant CBF/DREB1s. By comparative genomics, we found that nine of ten BrDREB1 genes were present in seven macro-synteny blocks co-linear to four Arabidopsis counterpart blocks and also genomic organizations of their flanking regions were very similar to those for co-linear Arabidopsis CBF/DREB1 genes. In particular, three genes, BrDREB1A, BrDREB1B1, and BrDREB1C1, were closely located within a 59 kb genomic sequence, which was similar to that of their Arabidopsis counterpart genes. However, the genomic regions of those BrDREB1 genes contained additional sequences, compared to their co-linear regions in A. thaliana. The expression of BrDREB1 genes under abiotic stresses were examined by searching microarray database and by RT-PCR analysis. All of eight genes tested were highly up-regulated during cold treatment and some of them were also responsive to salt, drought, and ABA treatment. Taken together, these results indicate that CBF/DREB1-mediated stress signaling pathway is also functioning in B. rapa. On the other hand, differences in genomic organization and gene number for CBF/DREB1 are thought to cause different response to stress between B. rapa and A. thaliana. In this presentation, we will introduce more detailed results for CBF/DREB1 gene family in B. rapa.
