        Physical and Chemical Weathering Indices for Biotite Granite and Granitic Weathered Soil in Gyeongju

        Physical weathering caused by external forces and chemical weathering caused by the decomposition or alteration of constituent materials are the two factors that dominate the mechanical properties of rocks. In this study, a field investigation was undertaken to identify the physical and chemical weathering characteristics of the biotite granite and granitic weathered soils in Gyeongju, South Korea. Samples were collected according to their grade of weathering and subjected to modal analysis, XRD analysis, XRF analysis, physical property tests, particle size distribution tests, and slake durability tests. Modal and XRD analysis identified these rocks as biotite granite; secondary alteration minerals were not observed. Physical property tests and particle size distribution analyses indicate an average porosity of 41.28% and a sand content of > 90 wt.%. These values are somewhat higher than those of granites in general. The results of the slake durability test and XRF analyses show that the physical and chemical weathering indices of the samples vary with the degree of weathering.

        Structural integrity evaluation in regard to high temperature reactor was proposed by ASME Sec.III Sub.Sec NH and RCC-MR. However, procedure of calculation has limitation in a practical work, because complex procedure is needed for integrity evaluation and artificial error can be included in calculation. In addition, the existing evaluation program(ASME-NH SIE Code) developed by CUI(Character user interface) is difficult to use the program. Thus the web-based integrity evaluation program for the accurate and rapid assessment of high temperature reactor is developed based on ASME-NH code. To reduce limitations for using program, web-based program was developed by employing GUI(Graphic user interface). The result of this study is expected to be applied usefully for design and structural integrity evaluation of high temperature reactor.

        Mechanical Properties of Fault Rocks in Korea

        To understand the mechanical properties of fault rocks, data from 584 in situ and laboratory tests on fault rocks from 33 tunnels were analyzed. The unit weights of the fault rocks range from 17.3 to 28.2 kN/㎥ and the cohesion and friction angles vary from 5 to 260 kPa and 14.7˚ to 44.0˚, respectively. The modulus of deformation and elasticity were generally < 200 MPa. In most cases, the uniaxial compressive strength was < 0.5 MPa, and Poisson`s ratios were mainly 0.20-0.35. The mechanical properties of individual rock types were analyzed using box plots, revealing that the cohesion values and friction angles of shale and phyllite have relatively wide inter-quartile ranges and that the modulus of deformation and elasticity of shale have the lowest values of all rock types. In the analysis of mechanical properties by components of fault rocks, the largest values were shown in damage zones of individual rock types.

        제주지역 차나무 품종 4월 신초의 카테킨 함량 및 그 생합성 관련 유전자 발현량 비교

        본 연구에서는 우리나라에서 육종하고 있는 차나무 유전자원의 찻잎 특성을 이해하고자 4월 제주지역에서 자란 차나무 7개 품종(재래종, 금설, 보향, 상목, 참녹, 대차, 야부기다)의 1아2엽 신초를 대상으로 catechin류 함량 및 그 생합성에 관여하는 유전자 발현량을 조사하였다. 먼저, ODS-HPLC를 이용하여 차나무 품종 별 4월 신초분말에서 caffeine 및 catechin류를 정량하였다. 그 결과, 금설 신초는 다른 차나무 품종의 신초에 비해 총 catechin 함량뿐만 아니라 esterified catechin류인 EGCG와 ECG의 함량이 높았으나, 그 생합성에 관여하는 유전자들의 발현량은 상대적으로 낮은 경향임을 알 수 있었다. 보향 신초는 EGC 함량이, 그리고 보향과 참녹 신초는 EC 함량이높은 경향이었다. 또한 차나무 품종 별 4월 신초에서 real-time qPCR을 이용하여 catechin 생합성에 관여하는 유전자의 발현량을 조사하였다. 그 결과, 차나무 품종에 따라 4월 신초에서 catechin 생합성에 관여하는 유전자 발현량은 다소 차이를 나타냈다. 특히 4월 신초에서 dihydroflavanol 4-reductase (DFR), anthocyanidin synthase (ANS) 및anthocyanidin reductase (ANR) 등의 유전자의 발현량은 total catechin 함량과 양의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 특히 4월제주지역에서 생육하고 있는 차나무 7개 품종 신초에서 DFR, ANS 및 FGS가 catechin 생성에 영향을 주는 주요 인자들임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구결과는 고품질의 찻잎 생산 및 이를 이용한 다양한 용도의 차 가공품 개발을 위한우리나라에서 육종하고 있는 차나무 유전자원의 찻잎 특성을 파악하는 기초자료로 활용이 기대된다. The purpose of this study was to compare the catechin content and its biosynthesis-related gene expression in six different cultivar tea leaves of Camellia sinensis harvested in April at Jeju Island. The caffeine and catechin contents in tea shoots with one apical bud and two terminal leaves were analyzed by octadecylsilane-high performance liquid chromatography. The expression of the catechin biosynthetic genes was also investigated using a real-time polymerase chain reaction. The caffeine content of the tea shoots harvested in April ranged from 1.62 to 1.93 g/100 g dry wt. and the Chamnok cultivar tea shoot had the highest caffeine content among the cultivars. The total catechin content of the tea shoots harvested in April ranged from 5.22 to 7.18 g/100 g dry wt. The Kemsull cultivar had the highest total catechin content. The epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG) contents in the tea shoots of the Kemsull cultivar were 2.93 ± 0.04 and 1.26 ± 0.02 g/100 g dry wt., which was higher than the other cultivars. The EGC content in the tea shoots of Bohyang cultivar was 2.07 ± 0.04 g/100 g dry wt., followed by the Chamnok cultivar (1.69 ± 0.05 g/100 g dry wt.). Positive correlations between the expression levels of dihydroflavanol 4-reductase (DFR), anthocyanidin synthase (ANS), and flavan-3-ol gallate synthase (FGS) and the total catechin content were identified in the April tea shoots. However, negative correlations between the expression levels of flavonoid 3 ,5 -hydroxylase(F3 ,5 H), and total catechin content were also identified. These results indicate that DFR and FGS are potentially key genes that affect catechin accumulation in tea leaves grown in April at Jeju Island.

        Synthesis of SiAlON Ceramics with Novel Magnetic Properties

        This paper presents a study on the magnetic behaviour of selected doped SiAlONs with various compositions including Y, Yb, Sm, Gd, and Er. The resulting crystalline phases were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The magnetic hysteresis data for the samples were collected at room temperature using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The study revealed that doped SiAlONs experience an appreciable level of magnetic hysteresis. Although the parameters corresponding to hysteresis loops in doped SiAlONs are less than those of common ferrites, their magnetic properties of SiAlONs may open up new potential areas of application as the host SiAlON ceramics have excellent structural properties.
