<P>Although cadmium sulfide (CdS) photovoltaic cells are widely used in optical sensors owing to their low cost and high reliability, there is an increasing need to develop a Cd-free sensor. Eu2+-activated strontium aluminate (SrAl2O4:Eu2+) is an important material with high efficiency in the visible region, good stability, and good chemical and thermal resistance. In the present study, a SrAl2O4:Eu2+-based optical sensor possessing the abovementioned photovoltaic characteristics was manufactured. There is a need to assess and improve its reliability even in the development stage so as to achieve a reliability either comparable to or greater than that of the CdS cell. The failure modes of both the CdS and SrAl2O4:Eu2+ systems were investigated to predict a failure mechanism in the field settings, and an optimized reliability test was designed. Based on the above, the relative life of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+ system and the commercial CdS system were compared by conducting a comparative life test. The failure mechanism was closely investigated after the comparative life test and the design of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+ system was modified to improve its reliability.</P>

Background/Aims: Alcohol may be a cocarcinogen in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Present study investigated the effect of alcohol on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) caused by hepatitis B (HBV). Methods: All patients with LC or HCC associated with HBV, admitted between March 2001 and January 2007, were included. Exclusion criteria were patients with anti-HCV (+) or HCC without underlying LC. Demographic and laboratory data at enrollment, and amounts of alcohol intake until enrollment were taken. In addition, etiologies of LC or HCC were classified arbitrarily as HBV or HBV+alcohol according to the amounts of alcohol intake (low dose (20 g/day for 10 years), middle close (40 g/day for 10 years), and high does (80 g/day for 10 years)). Univariate and multivariate analysis were done for evaluating risk factors for HCC. Results: 181 patients with LC and 208 patients with HCC were enrolled. HCC group was older (55±10 vs. 51±10 years, p<0.001), had higher proportion of male (M/F: 160/48 vs. 119/62, p=0.015) and much more amount of alcohol intake (196.9 vs. 135.4 kg, p=0.028) than LC group. However, HBeAg positivity and HBV DNA titer (log copy/mL) were not different between both groups. In evaluation of amount of significant alcohol intake that effected on prevalence of HCC, when the high dose was selected for classification of etiology, HCC group had higher proportion of HBV+alcohol than LC group (30.3% vs. 21%, p=0.036). In logistic regression analysis for the risk factors of HCC, odds ratio of age and sex were 1.056 (p<0.001) and 2.33 (p=0.001), respectively. The older age and male gender were the risk factors for HCC. However, the amount of alcohol intake was not a significant risk factor. Conclusions: Chronic alcohol intake was not a risk factor for the development of HCC in patient with liver cirrhosis caused by HBV. Prospective study is needed to confirm this finding.

We experienced a case of infectious mononucleosis with facial palsy in 14 month-old male, who was admitted with chief complaints of fever, cervical lymphadenopahty and facial deviation with swelling. Peripheral blood showed absolute lymphocytosis with 61% atypical lymphocytes. Although Heterophil antibody test was not significant, EBNA (Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen) antibody test was positive. So, We reported this case and review related literatures briefly.
Electrical Properties of PZT-PCW Thick Film on Pt/Sic/Si, and Structural Stability of SiC

<P>We have fabricated the PZT-PCW thick films on Pt/(Ti, Pt, and TiO 2 )/SiN x /SiC/Si substrates. SiC thick films were deposited on the Si substrate by thermal CVD method. SiN x films with different film thickness as a diffusion barrier layer were deposited on SiC/Si substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The bottom electrode used was double layers of Pt/(Ti, Ta, and TiO 2 ). We used TiO 2 , Ti, and Ta as a buffer layer to improve the adhesion property of Pt film. PZT-PCW thick films were prepared on the SiC thick films by screen printing. All samples were quickly introduced into the furnace, kept at a temperature between 750 and 950° for 10 min, and then cooled in air. For application of cantilever based device, SiC thick film was used as a supporting material in order to improve sensing sensitivity of cantilever based sensor. However, in order to use SiC thick films, we needed to investigate interfacial properties between PZT and SiC thick films. We investigated the structural stability of the adhesion layer (Ti, TiO 2 , and Ta) and the diffusion barrier layer (SiN x ) using the PZT-PCW thick films with different layers. The PZT-PCW thick film with TiO 2 as adhesion layer showed more stable interface than that with Ti and Ta below 900°C. In the case of the PZT-PCW thick film with SiN x layer, SiN x films showed more stable interface at the thickness of 3000 to 6000 Å. In the case of PZT-PCW thick film with the SiN x thickness of 6000 Å, the electrical properties were improved with the increase of sintering temperature. In case of the PZT-PCW thick film with sintered at 950°C, the remanent polarization (P r ) was about 13.0 µ C/cm 2 at the applied field of 150 kV/cm, and the dielectric permittivity (e r ) was 551 at the frequency of 100 kHz.</P>

The Taebaek Group (Cambrian-Ordovician) in theTaebaeksan Basin comprises mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sequenceand is exposed well in the Seokgaejae section located in the central-eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The group in the Seokgaejaesection consists of in ascending order the Myeonsan, Myobong,and Duwibong formations. This study describes in detail the well-exposed outcrop sections of the Taebaek Group in the SeokgaejaePass in order to refine the lithostratigraphy of the lower Paleozoicstrata in the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea. The refined lithostratigra-phy delineates clearly the lithologic boundary between the Myobongand Daegi formations, the Hwajeol and Dongjeom formations, theDumugol and Makgol formations, and the Makgol and Jigunsanformations. The preliminary information on trilobite faunal asem-blages suggests that the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary can beplaced within the lowermost part of the Dongjeom Formation.
EFFECT OF SILICON CARBIDE PASSIVATION FILM ON THE RESONANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF CANTILEVER

<P> We have used silicon carbide (SiC) thin films as an insulating material of the PZT micro cantilevers for electrical and biological passivation. The use of SiC thin films as a passivation layer of the PZT microcantilevers is also seemingly viable to insure the high mass sensitivity as well as the stable passivation. In this study, we report the effect of SiC passivation layer on the performance of the PZT microcantilevers. The micromachined PZT microcantilevers having a structure of SiNx/Ta/Pt/PZT/Pt were fabricated through MEMS processes. In order to improve the mass sensitivity and the passivation, SiC thin films of the high elasticity material were deposited on the cantilever using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at the temperature of 400°C. Plane-strain modulus of SiC thin film was measured by nanoindentation. We observed that SiC thin films showed higher Young's modulus than Si and SiO2. Before and after the deposition of SiC thin films, the end-tip deflection and the resonant frequency change of microcantilevers were measured by a confocal microscope and an impedance analyzer. It was confirmed that end-tip deflection of microcantilever was reduced by 13∼18% through the deposition of SiC thin films, indicating the stress relaxation of the microcantilevers.</P>

Primary lymphoma of the kidney is rare, and in most cases is attributable to lymphomatous renal infilitration of systemic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or an extension from an adjacent site of the disease. Since the renal parenchyma is not a lymphoid organ, the mechanism by which renal lymphoma occur remains poorly understood. We report here a case of primary bilateral B-cell renal lymphoma in 26-year- old man who was treated successfully with combination chemotherapy.
