To compare 5-fluorouracil plus epirubicin (FE) to 5-fluorouracil plus cisplatin (FP) chemotherapy as adjuvant therapy for patients with resected gastric cancer. Between August 1995 and March 2000, 46 patients with completely resected gastric cancer received six courses of FE (5-fluorouracil 1000mg/m2/day, D2-D5, epirubicin 70mg/m2, D1) or FP (5-fluorouracil 1000mg/m2/day, D2-D5, cisplatin 70mg/m2, D1) chemotherapy. The 23 patients were assigned to each treatment group. A total of 127 courses of treatment were given both FE and FP group. The FP group tended to show more risk of overall death rate. But there were no differences between FE and FP groups in terms of overall survival or disease-free survival. Both treatment arms were generally well tolerated to chemotherapy. We concluded to be no significant differences between FE and FP groups in terms of overall survival or disease-free survival. To define the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy for gastric adenocarcinoma, further prospective randomized trials with large number of patients should be warranted.

This study was carried out to investigate overall performance and to estimate effects of the environmental factors on body weights of the bull in Korean Native Cattle. Data used for this study included a total of 545 heads of Korean Native Cattle recorded from 1981 to 1990 at Alpine Experiment Station located in Kangwon province. The effects of year of birth, age of dam, parity of dam and season of birth were estimated by means of least squares method. Overall least squares means and standard errors for the body weights of the bull at birth, 4, 6, 12 and 18 months of ate were 26.8±0.13, 99.3±0.58, 142.4±0.80, 338.0±1.34 and 484.2±2.00㎏, respectively. The effects of year of birth showed significant differences on birth weigh and highly significant differences on the other traits. The effects of age of dam showed significant differences on 4 months of age. The effects of season of birth showed significant differences on all of the traits. the calves born in winter or spring were heavier than those born in summer or fall.
Expression of thymosin β4 in odontoblasts during mouse tooth development.

<P>Thymosin β4 (Tβ4) is expressed in developing tissue, where it stimulates cell differentiation and migration. Further, Tβ4 is expressed during molar development in mice, but the expression and function of Tβ4 in odontoblasts during mammalian tooth development have not yet been reported. Therefore, this study examined the expression and function of Tβ4 in differentiating odontoblasts during tooth development. As observed by immunohistochemistry, Tβ4 was expressed in the oral epithelium and inside cells of the tooth bud on embryonic day 15 (E15). Further, on E17, Tβ4 was expressed strongly in the dental lamina and oral epithelium, but only expressed in part of the cells in the outer and inner dental epithelium. Tβ4 was strongly expressed in the entire cytoplasm of odontoblasts on postnatal day 1 (PN1) and expressed intensively in the apical area of odontoblasts on PN4. Further, expression of Tβ4 was increased gradually in odontoblasts from PN1 to PN21. In an odontoblast cell line, MDPC-23, expression of Tβ4 mRNA and protein was increased strongly on day 4 and gradually decreased from day 14. The gene expression of dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), bone sialoprotein (BSP), osteocalcin (OCN), osteonectin (ON), and collagen type I, related with mineralization, was significantly decreased in si-Tβ4/MDPC-23 during differentiation compared to that in MDPC-23 cells. Taken together, our results suggest that Tβ4 may be involved in oral epithelial cell proliferation at the initial stage of tooth development and regulates the expression and secretion of proteins during odontoblast differentiation.</P>
