        A Semantic Analysis of Universal and Idiosyncratic Features of Induced Motion Verbs: From the Perspective of Language Typology

        This is a semantic study of causative movement verbs that have been organized into two main groups consisting of similar and contrasting features. This analysis contradicts Van Valin & LaPolla (1997) and other authors working within the Role and Reference Grammar theoretical framework such as Jolly (1991, 1993), who defends the view that causative movement verbs only respond to one Aktionsart type (that is, to one type of mode of action): causative accomplishment verbs. I demonstrate that there are also 24 Semantic Analysis of Induced Motion Verbs causative active accomplishment movement verbs. This distinction is supported through the different locational expressions each take. Thus, the essential role that such expressions play in the lexical decomposition of movement verbs is discussed. Also, I offer a comparative analysis of these verbs in English and Quenya. The results allow for the identification of the universal semantic features of both types of verbs; they provide evidence for the usefulness of artificial languages not only in global and cross-cultural communication, but also in the contrastive syntactic and semantic analysis of natural languages. This study has followed the semantic approach of Componential Analysis, of which the different semantic classes of verbs reflect different syntactic and semantic argument structures. This explains the direct relation between the type of verb and the type of locative argument it takes.

      • Real World Effectiveness of Ledipasvir/Sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF) for 8 weeks in Patients Coinfected with HCV and HIV-1

        Aims: The AASLD/IDSA/IAS-USA Guidance and EASL Recommendations on Treatment of Hepatitis C state that HIV/HCV coinfection should be treated the same as HCV monoinfection with careful monitoring of antiretrovirals. Real world cohorts (RWC) have demonstrated excellent efficacy of LDV/SOF for 8weeks in HCV monoinfected patients. The aim of this study was to describe the effectiveness of the STR of LDV/SOF for 8 weeks in HCV GT 1 patients with HIV/HCV coinfection in RWC. Methods: Real world effectiveness data of LDV/SOF for 8weeks in HIV/HCV coinfection is emerging from multiple cohorts. In this descriptive analysis, data from two prospective studies, one investigator- sponsored, 1 registrational trial, and three retrospective RWC of LDV/SOF for 8weeks in HIV/HCV co-infected patients were compared. The prospective trials include data from Ain et al (investigator sponsored) and Isakov et al (registrational trial). The RWC include the Deutsches Hepatitis C-Register, Madrid Coinfection Registry (Madrid-CoRe), and Veterans Affairs HCV Registry. Baseline characteristics and efficacy were analyzed. Results: The majority of the 279 patients included in this descriptive analysis were GT1, treatment naive (TN), noncirrhotic (NC), and had a HCV viral load <6million. The prospective cohorts enrolled 79 patients with the following baseline characteristics: mean age (43 years), male (74%), white (78%), and GT1a (55%). The RWC studies assessed enrolled 200 patients with the following overall baseline characteristics: mean age (53 years) male (79%), white (98%), and GT1a (82%) in those that reported demographics. The overall SVR12 from five diverse real world and post-marketing cohorts was 94% (263/279). The individual study results are presented in Table 1. Conclusions: This analysis of diverse cohorts from the EU and US yielded high SVR rates similar to SVR rates seen in multiple RW moninfected cohorts and supports the use of 8 weeks of LDV/SOF in TN, NC GT 1 HIV/HCV coinfected patients with a baseline HCV viral load <6 million.

        Identification of membrane proteins of the midgut of Zabrotes subfasciatus larvae associated with the insecticidal mechanism of PF2 lectin

        The gut of insects, aswell as other animals, is rich in glycoconjugates that have important biological functions required for growth and development. Interaction of lectins (carbohydrate binding proteins)with these conjugates can result in anti-physiological and insecticidal effects. PF2 lectin from Olneya tesota seeds shows insecticidal activity against Zabrotes subfasciatus larvae (bean pest). In order to evaluate the impact of plant lectins on pests, it is important to understand the composition, distribution, and physiological role of glycoconjugates present in the gut. In this study, the binding of PF2 to midgut membrane glycoproteins from 16-day-old larvae was evaluated using 2-DE (two-dimensional electrophoresis) and lectin blotting assay performed with biotinylated PF2. LC– MS/MS analysis identified several glycoproteins that could act as targets for PF2 recognition and that are involved in energy metabolism, cell motility and division, and vesicle movement among other processes. Each of these proteins is physiologically important in such a way that interference by PF2 could result in insecticidal activity.

        Skin Testing With Peach Peel Extract Versus Serum IgE to Pru p 3 as a Stronger Predictor of Peach-Induced Anaphylaxis

        The most important peach fruit allergen is Pru p 3, followed by Pru p 1, Pru p 4, and Pru p 7. We aimed to assess their role in subjects with peach fruit-induced allergy (anaphylaxis and OAS) and compare skin prick tests (SPT) vs. specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) for predicting anaphylaxis. We also selected a control group. SPT included prevalent inhalant and plant food allergens plus peach peel extract. The sIgE to Pru p 1, Pru p 3, Pru p 4, and Pru p 7 were quantified. Compared with controls (n = 42), cases (n = 41) were younger (P = 0.003), more frequently female (P < 0.05) and had higher SPT positivity to peach peel (44% vs. 2.4%, P < 0.0001). There were significant differences in sensitization to several pollens: Olea europaea, Artemisia vulgaris, Prunus persica, Platanus acerifolia (all P < 0.001); and fruits: apple (P < 0.04), peanut (P < 0.002), tomato (P < 0.005), and melon (P < 0.05). Pru p 3 sIgE was detected in 61% of all cases (85% anaphylaxis and 38% OAS; P < 0.01 each) and 5% of controls (P < 0.001). Pru p 4 sIgE was present in 19% of cases and 7% of controls. The sIgE to Pru p 1 and Pru p 7 were not found. The odds ratio to predict anaphylaxis for peach peel SPT was 113 (confidence interval [CI], 20–613; P < 0.0001); for sIgE to Pru p 3, 22 (CI, 5.3–93; P < 0.0001); and for SPT positivity to selected plant food allergens, 5 (CI, 1–19; P < 0.05). In our study group, SPT with peel peach extract was a better predictor of anaphylaxis than Pru p 3 sIgE or other variables considered. The role of sIgE to Pru p 1, Pru p 4, and Pru p 7 seemed negligible.

        Clavulanic Acid Is a Leading Culprit Beta-Lactam in Immediate Allergic Reactions to Penicillins

        Purpose: Clavulanate, a beta-lactam associated with amoxicillin, is frequently prescribed in patients at all ages. Recent data implicate amoxicillin-clavulanate in up to 80% of beta-lactam allergy cases. We assessed clavulanate’s role in inducing allergic reactions to this combination treatment, with a focus on selective immediate reactions. Methods: Adults (≥ 16 years) reporting a history of immediate reactions to amoxicillin-clavulanate were evaluated through a beta-lactam allergological workup, using modified European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology guidelines. Patients first underwent skin testing, and if negative, drug provocation tests. Expected outcomes were: Group A, subjects with immediate reaction to classical penicillin group determinants (penicilloyl polylysine, minor determinants mixture, and/or penicillin G); Group B, subjects with selective immediate reaction to amoxicillin; Group C, subjects with selective immediate reaction to clavulanate and Group D, those immediate reactions with co-sensitization to clavulanate plus penicillin group determinants or amoxicillin. Results: Of 1,170 included patients, 104 had immediate reactions: 36.5% to penicillin group determinants (Group A), 26.9% to amoxicillin (Group B), 32.7% to clavulanate (Group C), and 3.8% to clavulanate plus penicillin determinants or amoxicillin (Group D). Diagnosis was made by skin testing in 79%, 75% and 47% of the patients, respectively, in the first 3 groups (P < 0.001). Drug provocation tests were necessary to establish most other diagnoses. Anaphylaxis predominated over urticaria/angioedema in all groups. Conclusions: Selective immediate reactions to clavulanate accounted for over a third of cases with confirmed reactions after amoxicillin-clavulanate intake, with more than half experiencing anaphylaxis. Within this group, skin test sensitivity was below 50%. People taking amoxicillin-clavulanate may also be co-sensitized to both drugs.

        Production and characterization of Al2O3-Cu composite materials

        Using an intense powder mixture of Al2O3 with different copper contents (1, 5, 10, 20 or 30 mass %) several Al2O3-Cu composite materials were fabricated. The microstructure of the composites was observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The observations show a microstructure formed by an Al2O3 ceramic matrix with fine Cu metallic networks. Due to the liquid sintering mechanism, the relative density reached by the samples was higher than 95%, this together with the fine and homogeneous microstructure present in the samples let us obtain composite materials with good values of toughness, hardness, elastic modulus and electrical properties. The incorporation of a ductile metal inside a hard ceramic matrix increments its toughness. The probable toughening mechanism is crack bridging due to the presence of a homogeneous ductile metal networks in the material’s microstructure. The values of density, hardness, elastic modulus and electrical resistance of the composites are directly dependent on the copper content in the matrix, because with an increase in copper content the density of the composites is larger, whereas, the hardness, elastic modulus and electrical resistance are reduced.
