Acupuncture has been shown to have therapeutic effects on many mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse in human and animal studies. Maternal separation (MS) is a risk factor in the development of mood-related disorders such as depression. This study investigated the effects of acupuncture during MS by evaluating locomotion as behavioral markers of depression and by observing changes in c-Fos expression in the limbic system (hippocampus, amygdala and cingulate cortex) to elucidate the mechanism of the therapeutic effect. The employed acupoint, Shinmun (HT7), has been clinically used to treat mental disorders. MS for 7 days beginning on postnatal day 14 induced a significant decrease in locomotion, while acupuncture treatment at acupoint HT7 resulted in a significant increase in locomotion. c-Fos immunoreactive cells in area dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus were increased in the MS group, but significantly decreased in the acupuncture group. These findings suggest that acupuncture has an effect on the depression-like disorder caused by MS, possibly by modulating c-Fos expression in DC of the hippocampus.

In order to investigate the effects according to the concentration(0, 30, 60 and 120μg/350-400g: saline group, Ⅰ-group, Ⅱ-group and Ⅲ-group) of Labiatae Herba Prunellae Acua-acupuncture on the bilateral loci Taechung(LR3) in hyperthyroidism rats induced by sodium triiodothyronine injection, triiodothyronine(T3), thyroxine(T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) and total cholesterol were observed. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The increases of the serum T3 were inhibited significantly by Ⅱ-group and Ⅲ-group compared with the control group. 2. The decreases of the serum T4 were inhibited significantly by Ⅰ-group, Ⅱ-group and Ⅲ-group compared with the control group. The Ⅰ-group and Ⅱ-group compared with the saline group is significantly different. 3. The decreases of the serum TSH were inhibited significantly by Ⅱ-group and Ⅲ-group compared with the control group. The Ⅱ-group compared with the saline group is significantly different. 4. The decreases of the serum total cholesterol were inhibited significantly by Ⅰ-group, and Ⅱ-group and Ⅲ-group compared with the control group. The Ⅱ-group and Ⅲ-group compared with the saline group is significantly different.

Carthami tinctorii Fructus is known for its good effect on diseases such as fracture, menorrhalgia, menoschesis, puerperium aneilema and so on. The study of irritation and toxicity of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution applied topically to the skin and the eye mucous membrane were carried out to prove the safety of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution in clinical use. Animal for the research was the rabbit and the solution for the test was made from Carthami semen. 6 animals were used for the skin test and 9 animals were used for the eye mucous membrane test. In results, both tests proved that Carthami oil aquapuncture solution makes no irritable reaction on skin and eye mucous membrane of rabbit. We consider that this result is helpful for saying about the safety of Carthami oil aquapuncture solution in clinical use.

Objective : Acupuncture has been used for treatment of numerous disorders, especially for pain control in Oriental Medicine. However, the mechanism of pain control by acupuncture was not clear until now. This study was performed to prove analgesic mechanism of acupuncture treatment at acupoint ST_(36) by observing the changes of abdominal pain and c-Fos expression in the thalamus. Methods : Abdominal pain was induced by acetic acid, and the changes of writhing reflex after acupuncture treatment an ST_(36) and non-acupoints were measured. c-Fos immunohistochemistry was also performed to study the changes of the neuronal activity in the thalamus. Results : The writhing reflex decrease significantly after acupuncturing at ST_(36) compared with control group(p<0.05). The changes of the writhing reflex by non-acupoint acupuncture treatment also showed significant decrease compared with control group(p<0.05). c-Fos expression in the thalamus, especially periventricular part was significantly decreased after acupuncturing at ST_(36) compared with control groups(p<0.05). Conclusion : This study shows that the acupuncture has the analgesic effect in the abdominal pain induced by acetic acid and the thalamus might be a important area for this mechanism.
