A Case Study of the Use of an In-house Oral Exam in a University English Program

Vol.0 No.65

Evaluating nonnative English-speakers' English speaking ability has steadily been emphasized over the past two decades in the undergraduate English programs at Korean universities. However, there is insufficient information about how classroom-based oral exams are conducted at college level. In this study, an in-house English oral exam was used to measure students' English speaking abilities. This study examined if the evaluations of an in-house oral exam differ among teachers, and whether the oral exam measures the level of achievement of students' English speaking abilities adequately. Additionally, this study investigated how the students perceived the classroom-based oral exam. The data used included both pre-and post- test results of oral exams and survey questionnaires collected from the students. The results showed that there was no significant mean difference among teachers, which indicates teachers scored with consistency, and the students made statistically significant progress in their speaking abilities. However, the results revealed that the students did not fully master the target course objectives. Based on the findings, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

An Examination of Raters' Decision-Making Processes on English-speaking Evaluations

Vol.- No.21

There has been growing interest over the past two decades in investigating raters' rating processes through the analysis of verbal reports. The present study attempts to examine what features skilled native English-speaking raters attend to while they are evaluating nonnative English-speaking speakers' responses. This study employed think-aloud verbal reports made by four raters as they scored 10 nonnative English-speaking test-takers. There were 652 verbal protocols that occurred in total. The rating behaviors are categorized into 25 coding systems. The frequency analysis results from raters' verbal reports have showed that native English-speaking raters often heeded aspects of the performances that are relevant to the assessment criteria. Experienced raters tended to provide more verbal protocols for the evaluation of accuracy judgments compared to the other scoring criteria. While they assessing fluency, raters were most likely to rely more on pauses, hesitations or speed than contents, the number of repetitions or self-corrections. When raters made pronunciation judgments, they raters seemed to consider the degree of Korean accent the most. However, raters sometimes paid attention to features that were somewhat irrelevant to scoring criteria. Based on the findings, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

C Vol.55 No.1(C)

        - We propose an optical and an electrical detection methods for detecting various bio-molecules effectively with microcantilevers. The microcantilevers were fabricated employing surface micromachining technique that has attractive advantages in terms of cost efficiency, simplicity and ability of fabricating in array. The fluid cell system for injection of bio-molecular solution is fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a fused silica glass. The microcantilever is deflected with respect to the difference of the surface stress caused by the formation of self-assembled bio-molecules on the gold coated side of the microcantilever. It detected cystamine dihydrochloride and glutaraldehyde molecules and analyzed individual concentrations of the cystamine dihydrochloride solution. We confirm that the deflections of bending-up or bending-down are occurred by the bio-molecule adsorption and microcantilever can be widely used to a -TAS and a lab-on-a-chip for a potential detection of various bio-molecules.

Vol.46 No.1

Blue-green algae blooms occurred during early winter in the North-Han River, Korea. Among blue-green algae, Anabaena spiroides were observed for approximately 33 consecutive days, between 28 November and 30 December, 2011. A. spiroides emerged from Lake Uiam to Lake Paldang, depending on the flow of the river has spread downstream. Changes of physical water environment like rising water temperature and increasing hydraulic retention time influenced the A. spiroides bloom. The A. spiroides bloom showed a very rapid increase in cell density, and a slow decrease: the cell density increased to a maximum of 11,325 cells mL-1 in Lake Paldang (st. 5), and was completely disappeared after the water temperature dropped below 4˚C. A decrease in water temperature was the most influential factor among all environmental parameters, for the reduction of A. spiroides cell density. The A. spiroides bloom was accompanied with the occurrence of very high concentrations of the odor metabolite geosmin. Geosmin reached the peak value of 1,640 ng L-1 in Lake Paldang (st. 4). The geosmin concentration was very strongly correlated with cell numbers of A. spiroides.

Vol.45 No.3

The zooplankton community of Lake Paldang, Korea, was investigated on a weekly basis from 2004 to 2006. The seasonal succession of zooplankton community structure was influenced by hydrological factors such as rainfall pattern and efflux in Lake Paldang. According to the monsoon climate, spring, fall and winter had reduced precipitation, so that zooplankton dynamics of the lake showed a typical succession pattern. In spring, small sized and faster growing rotifera rapidly increased, and copepods and cladocera noticeably increased thereafter. Rotifera dominated the zooplankton community, occupying more than 90% of total zooplankton abundance. Among rotifera, Keratella cochlearis was extremely dominant in spring. Copepoda were mainly present as Copepodid and Nauplius. Among cladoceran species, Bosmina longirostris was dominant. In summer, during the rainy season, zooplankton were flushed out by an associated dam. After the rainy season, rotifera increased rapidly when the water column of the lake was stable. During the fall, zooplankton abundance gradually reduced in accordance with decreasing water temperature. However, the occupation rate of copepod (Copepodid, Nauplius) increased relatively. Zooplankton dynamics were influenced by meteorological changes and hydraulic-hydrological factors, because Lake Paldang is a completely closed ecosystem.

Vol.- No.12

The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of writing feedback the students received when they had a writing conference with a native English-speaking professor in English writing clinics, and to examine the characteristics of students' English writing from the perspective of errors. In addition, this study attempted to investigate how learners' English writing changed after they got the English writing conference. To do this, 402 pieces of student writing feedback checklists obtained through English writing clinics with native English-speaking professors were analyzed for frequency. As a result of the analysis, the total number of English writing clinic feedback provided by native English-speaking professors was 3631, with an average of about 9 per student. The frequency of language use was 1324(36.5%), the frequency of content and organization feedback was 946(26.1%), the frequency of task completion was 804(22.1%), and the frequency of mechanical errors was 557(15.3%). Feedback in language use related to grammar and vocabulary accounted for the most, followed by the feedback on content and organization for writing fluency. The characteristics of the students' English writing, as seen through the feedback received from the native English-speaking professors at the English writing clinic, were that the students generally wrote according to the subject, the length tended to be rather short, and there were minor mistakes in the use of capitalization and punctuation marks. The students still had a lot of lexical and grammatical errors, and in terms of content and organization, they tended to express proper nouns in Korean, and occasionally lacked the topic sentences as well as supporting details. Additionally, in order to find out whether students use the feedback given by the native English-speaking professors when revising their English writings, the scores on the students' first drafts of English writing and the revised drafts were compared and analyzed. The average English writing score of the revised writings was significantly higher than the score of the first drafts. In other words, the feedback offered by the native English-speaking professors during English writing clinics helped students to correct their English writing and led to the improvement of the quality of English writing, showing the usefulness of the English writing clinic.
