This paper examines the characteristics of the Japanese language education in the Korean Enlightenment Period with a focus on the Nichigo Shōkei(1895), one of the underexamined materials in the previous studies on the Japanese language education. Publications of the Japanese language manuals during the Enlightenment Period are generally known as business-oriented practical handbooks for self-study. The similar interest in studying the Japanese language can be seen from the Nichigo Shōkei (1895): e.g., the names of currency in Japan and Korea or trade in goods and cash. However, it is also evident from the Preface and a few examples in the manual that Kanazawa, the author, alludes Japanese as a language to ‘enlighten’ Joseon. In addition, his transcription of Korean as well as accounts of particles indicate that the author probably had a profound knowledge of the Korean language. Unfortunately, little is known about Kanazawa’s career in Korean language education. Even though Kanazawa stayed in Korea on and off over 10 years for his work, it is doubtable that a Japanese whose career was entirely in commerce could write a language manual. In this regard, it is possible to conjecture that a note ‘pyeonja-sik’ in the Preface might refer Kanazawa as an editor, rather than the author of this manual. Considering the fact that Kanazawa worked for a publisher as well as the unusual division of this book in two parts seem to increase the possibility of the role of Kanazawa in the production of this book as an editor.

The textbooks for the Japanese language in this period were utilised as an analytical object of modern research on languages. As research on sentences and conversations became sophisticated, however, more analyses were presented from the perspective of Japanese language education. Most of linguistic research were initially based on the materials concerning the latter period of the Enlightenment period, produced by Korean scholars. Still, after the books for learners stored in the National Diet Library became open to the public, the materials produced by Japanese scholars were also taken into consideration. Despite researchers’ effort, however, no work was provided that comprehensively analysed both the former and the latter periods of the Enlightenment period. Further, no substantive discussion was presented that analysed the objectives and significances of Japanese language education based on the textbooks for the Japanese language. In future research, we need to reveal a shift in objectives and significances of Japanese language education, depending on the times and the authors, and also to clarify how they are represented in the textbooks for the Japanese language.

The present study analyzed the Korean language transcriptions of vowel components in Japanese language primers during Korea’s enlightenment period and examined the patterns of transcriptions in Japanese language primers. The results confirmed that it was often the case that “normative transcriptions” did not match “practical transcriptions” in Japanese language primers during Korea’s enlightenment period, and it seems that vowel components may have been transcribed not from letters but directly from phonetic sounds. Additionally, the authors of Japanese language primers during Korea’s enlightenment period seem to have recognized affrication in Korean; thus, they likely had a certain level of linguistic knowledge.

In this study, we survey “About schools in Korea (Chosun) (The matter of expenditure of subsidies),” stored in Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, taking a particular look at “(2) Subsidies provided for Pwusan Kayseng School” to analyze Pwusan Kayseng School, the first modern school in Pwusan. “(2) Subsidies provided for Pwusan Kayseng School,” the first article in “About general matters of schools,” includes records from the 10th of March 1897 to the 31st of July 1906, and it is a useful and detailed resource for administrative and educational matters in Pwusan Kayseng School. Pwusan Kayseng School was established by the Koreans who aimed at the self- civilization of the tribe, and it ran branch schools, serving as a core educational institution of “Japanese language school” in Gyeongsangnam province. Its distinctive features are its Japanese-mediated modern education and practical education. Pwusan Kayseng School plays an important role in the history of modern education in Korea, but the role of Japan in the administration of the school became greater for financial reasons; it was thus later regarded as a gambit for colonial education.

Japanese Language School (JLS), founded by Okakura Yoshisaburo as the founding instructor, is a foreign language institute established in Hansung by Government of Choson in 1891. JLS is first-of-its-kind in Korea and considering its sigificance, the institute holds tremendous importance on the history of Japanese language education in Korea. Previous studies on the matter, however, show inconsistencies in terms of the foundation period and the geographical site of the institute; thus, the purpose of this study is to re-examine the foundation period and the site of JLS. After examining primary historical sources -Tongrigyoseoptongsangsamuamunilgi (Logs of the Office for General Control of Diplomatic and Commercial Affair), Tongyeonilgi (Tongyeon Diary), Incheon hang gwancho (Logs of Incheon Port), Ilbonuh hakgyo gyosa shinmun (Employment Record of Teachers in Japanese Language School), Tokyo Asahi Shinmun (The Asahi Shimbun) -the present study suggests that JLS was established in Juja-Dong, Jujadong-Gye, Hundo-Bang, South Hansung-Bu area on July 25, 1891.
