2006 Journal of stroke Vol.8 No.1
Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome (FCMS) is caused by bilateral frontoparietal opercular lesions, and there are loss of voluntary control of facio-pharyngo-lingual-masticatory muscle. A 59 year-old man was admitted due to sudden left hemiparesis and severe dysphagia. He could blink and yawn spontaneously, but he could not close eyes and open mouths on command. Five years earlier he had experienced hemorrhage in the left basal ganglia resulted in the right sided hemiparesis. Recovery from this previous stroke was nearly complete. Brain MRI showed lesions in the right anterior operculum and the left posterior internal capsule-globus pallidus. We report a patient with FCMS was caused by unilateral anterior opercular and contralateral internal capsule lesions.
Vol.46 No.4
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a speech analysis program-based method in teaching English obstruents to Korean speakers. The advantage of WaveSurfer-based teaching lies in its capability of visualizing sound images in the forms of spectrograms, waveforms, intensity plots, and pitch curves. Students were instructed to be able to understand some basic acoustic features such as stop closure, vertical spike, burst noise, friction noise and measure the length of vowels and consonants. The acoustic experiment which we conducted proved that Korean speakers could drastically reduce the error rates in producing English obstruents like plosives, fricatives, and affricates after taking WaveSurfer-based pronunciation instructions for a certain period of time.
