시원의 세계를 찾아 떠나는 아나바시스: 알레호 까르뻰띠에르의 『잃어버린 발자취』와 유토피아적 비전

알레호 까르뻰띠에르(Alejo Carpentier)의 『잃어버린 발자취』(1953)는 20세기 라틴아메리카의 중요 소설의 하나로 평가 받고 있다. 따라서 세계 주요 국가의 언어로 번역 출간되었고 출간 65년이 지났음에도 해당 작품에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 현재까지 국내에는 단편 몇 개만 출간되어 그의 도저한 문학세계를 심층적으로 이해할 수 없었다. 이제 그의 대표작 『잃어버린 발자취』출간을 앞두고, 본고는 ‘유토피아 담론’의 틀로 해당 텍스트를 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 라틴아메리카의 정체성 찾기를 위한 사상적 접근의 한 방법이자 탈식민주의 시각으로 라틴아메리카의 역사를 소환하는 방법적 모색의 일환일 것이다. 따라서 해당 작품을 ‘유럽의 낙원’으로서의 라틴아메리카라는 서구의 이미지를 털어 내고 라틴아메리카의 원형적 세계를 찾아가는 길 찾기의 모색으로 간주하고, 작품에 나타난 ‘유토피아 담론’이 서구의 유토피아로 상상된 라틴아메리카를 그들 스스로의 눈으로 다시 살피고 발견하는 일종의 정체성 모색의 작업임을 확언하고자 한다. The Lost Steps (Los pasos perdidos) (1953) by Alejo Carpentier is considered one of the most important Latin American novels of the 20th century. It is translated into many languages such as English, French, German, and so on, and even after 65 years of its publication, it is still an on-going topic of much research. Nevertheless, to understand his fine literary world in some depth is difficult as his work has rarely been translated into Korean. This research studies the text as a utopian discourse at the juncture of the publication of his masterpiece The Lost Steps translated into Korean. This study is an ideological approach to identifying Latin America as well as sheds a different light on the History of Latin America from the postcolonial perspective. This study in the end equates the text as a quest for the proto-world of Latin America, stripping away the occidental image of Latin America as a European utopia. In short, the utopian discourse in Latin American literature seeks for what a true Latin American is through their own eyes, not a utopian space imagined by the occidental world.

본고는 16세기 라틴아메리카 선교의 주요한 역할을 했던 예수회 신부 호세 데 아코스타의 사상을 살펴보고 실천사역 활동의 핵심이었던 원주민 전교를 심층적으로 고찰하며 그 성과와 한계를 성찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 호세 데 아코스타가 속한 예수회의 설립이념과 설립 과정을 소개하고 대항종교 개혁시기 가톨릭 수호를 위한 움직임과 신학적 휴머니즘이 어떻게 선교전략으로 전화되고 있는지, 라틴아메리카 상황 속에서는 어떻게 구현되었는지 그 과정을 면밀히 살피고자 하였다. 구체적으로 식민시기, 인문주의의 발흥과 정치 사회적 콘텍스트 속에 진행된 원주민 사역에 이정표를 세운 호세 데 아코스타의 저작을 통해, 당대 예수회의 신학적 휴머니즘이 현장에서 어떻게 구현되고 있었는지 그 빛과 그림자를 살펴보았다. 또한 복음 전도의 이상을 실천하려는 이들의 노력에도 불구하고 유럽 중심적 시각에서 비롯된 실천 사역의 내재된 모순으로 인해 일정 부분 원주민 선교의 한계가 있었다는 것도 밝히며 예수회 선교의 실상을 다면적으로 평가하고자 하였다. This article aims to examine the thoughts of Jesuit priest Jose de Acosta, who played a major role in the mission of Latin America in the 16th century, to investigate the mission of the indigenous people who were at the heart of practical ministry activities and to reflect its achievements and limitations. To this end, we introduce the ideology and the process of establishment of the Jesuits to which Jose de Acosta belonged and look into how the movement and theological humanism to defend the Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation was transformed into a mission strategy, and how it was embodied in the context of Latin America. Specifically, through the work of Jose de Acosta, who set a milestone in the indigenous ministries with the rise of humanism and in the political and social context during the colonial period, we examined the light and shadow of the theological humanism of the Jesuits. Despite their efforts to practice the ideal of evangelism, the indigenous missions were limited in certain ways due to the inherent contradiction of practical ministry originating from a European-centered perspective. We attempted to evaluate the reality of Jesuit missions in a multi-faceted manner.
