'Ha Go Cho (夏枯草)' is one of the Chinese crude drugs used mainly as a diuretic. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Ha Go Cho', it was reported by Su et al. that those from China were originated from the fruited spica of Prunella vulgaris L. of Labiatae. It was, however, for the herba or spica of Prunella vulgaris L. var. lilacina Nakai from Korea. According to survey of markets in Korea, most of the materials collected in the markets seemed to be originated from Prunella plant, while some seemed to be Thesium plant of Santalaceae. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Ha Go Cho', the anatomical characteristics of Prunella vulgaris L. var. lilacina Nakai and Thesium chinense Turcz. were studied. As a result, it was clarified that some 'Ha Go Cho' from Korea were the herba or spica of Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina, whereas some others were the herba of Thesium chinense.

'Ga Mi Yung Sin Whan' is a Chinese patent medicine, which is used for a tachycardia, anemia, amnesia, ecstacy, and so on in Korea. This medicine consists of 12 kinds of powdered crude drugs. For the identification of individual ingredients in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used as it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this paper, the effectiveness of this method is exemplified by the identification of the ingredients in Ga Mi Yeong Sin Whan which contains 12 powdered crude drug ingredients.

The Chinese crude drug, 'Yong Dam (龍膽)' which is derived from the root of Gentiana plants of the family Gentianaceae, has been used as remedy for stomachic, intestinal catarrh, convulsion, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Yong Dam', it has been considered to be Gentiana species of Gentianaceae, especially Gentiana scabra, but there has no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Yong Dam' from Korea, we studied on the anatomical characteristics of Gentiana species growing wild in Korea i.e. Gentiana scabra var. buergeri, G. uchiyamai, G. triflora, G. axillariflora var. coreana and of 'Yong Dam' from Korea on Korean market. Through our studies, the botanical origin of 'Yong Dam' from Korea was proved to be Gentiana scabra var. buergeri and Gentiana axillariflora var. coreana.

Changes on leaf surface morphology and metabolites contents (catechins, caffeine, amino acid and total sugar) of tea tree (Camellia sinensis L.) treated by low temperature were analysed. The leaf of tea trees under cold stress showed smaller organized cell and stoma size compared to tea trees grown in greenhouse. The contents of caffeine and catechins of tea trees grown at outdoor nursery were higher than those of tea trees grown in greenhouse. The content of amino acid of tea trees on outdoor nursery was lower compared to tea trees in greenhouse. However, the content of total sugar was lower at outdoor nursery than in greenhouse. The content of total sugar increased from 0 to 2 hr of chilling time, after that it decreased. This result suggested that the cold stress affected to the morphology of leaf surface and the contents of metabolite biosynthesis such as caffeine, catechins and sugars in tea trees.

The Korean crude drug 'Suk Wi' has been used as the folk remedy for diuretic and gonorrhea. The botanical origin of the crude drug has never been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of Suk Wi, studied on the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Pyrrosia species growing wild in Korea i.e., P. linearifolia, P. lingua, P. petiolosa, P. tricuspis and Suk Wi from Korea on Korean market. As a result, it was made clear that Suk Wi from Korea was derived from Pyrrosia lingua and P. petiolosa.
