Investigating Perceptual Similarity of Colour Category Boundary Pairs in a Digital Environment

This study analysed the characteristics of perceptual similarity judgements for colour-category boundary pairs in a digital display environment. Ten adjacent colour pairs on the Munsell hue circle were selected and a repeated-measures experiment was conducted in which participants rated, on a 7-point scale, the similarity of the right-hand stimulus relative to the left-hand stimulus. The Pearson correlation coefficient between Session 1 and Session 2 (r = .796) and the ICC (.80) indicated high repeat reliability and the paired-samples t-test also showed no significant difference. ANOVAs revealed statistically significant differences in similarity judgements across colour pairs for Session 1, Session 2, and their combined mean, supporting systematic effects of category boundaries. The regression analysis on lightness difference found no significant effect, as all colour pairs were controlled for lightness. Pairs such as Y–GY, B–PB, and GY–G consistently exhibited lower similarity scores, while P–RP and G–BG were perceived as more similar. This study provides evidence that perceptual sensitivity at colour-category boundaries exerts a systematic influence on colour perception. These results imply that boundary-based colour choices can impact user experience by unintentionally increasing or decreasing perceived similarity in digital design contexts.
Anti-Proliferative Effects of Evodiamine in Human Lung Cancer Cells

Evodiamine, a compound isolated from the Evodia rutaecarpa Bentham (Rutaceae), is known to have a potential anti-proliferative activity in human cancer cells. However, the growth inhibitory activity against lung cancer cells and the underlying molecular mechanisms have been poorly determined. The present study was designed to examine the anti-proliferative effect of evodiamine in A549 human lung cancer cells. Methods: A549 cells were treated with the compounds from Evodia rutaecarpa, and the anti-proliferative activity was evaluated by the sulforhodamine B assay. The mechanisms of action for the growth inhibitory activity of evodiamine on A549 human lung cancer cells were evaluated using flow cytometry for cell cycle distribution, and Western blot for assessment of accumulation and phosphorylation of potential target proteins. Results: Evodiamine exhibited a potent anti-proliferative activity against A549 human lung cancer cells. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that evodiamine induced cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase and apoptosis in the A549 cells. The cell cycle arrest was well correlated with the inhibition of cyclin B1, cyclin A, cdk2 and p-cdc2 (Tyr15) and increase of p-chk1 (Ser345) and p-chk2 (Thr68). Evodiamine also significantly increased the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 and decreased procaspase-3, suggesting evodiamine- induced apoptosis via the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. In addition, evodiamine inhibited the expression of p-ERK and ERK. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the anti-proliferative effect of evodiamine was associated in part with the induction of G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, and down-regulation of ERK in human lung cancer cells.

Purpose : There is a predilection for subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis(SNL) in young Asian women. Few pediatric cases have been reported. This study was performed to evaluate clinical features of children with SNL. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed clinical features of 23 cases of SNL under 15 years of age identified in Nowon Eulji Hospital from February 1995 to January 2002. Two cases were diagnosed by excisional biopsy and 21 cases by fine needle aspiration. Results : The ages ranged from 14 months to 14 years(mean $8.1{\pm}3.8$ years). The male to female ratio was 1 : 1.6. Ten cases(10/23) were diagnosed in 2000. The onset was more frequent in spring. The common presenting symptoms were neck mass(22/23), pain(12/20) and fever(8/18). Fever subsided within two weeks in seven out of eight and lymphadenopathy resolved within five months in 14 out of 15. The mean WBC count was $7,664{\pm}3,454/mm^3$. Elevated levels of ESR(10/ 12) and lactate dehydrogenase(5/6) and positive reaction for CRP(3/4) were frequent. Radiologically measured greatest diameter of the enlarged lymph nodes was less than 2 cm in 14 out of 15. One case occurred in a child with alopecia areata and one case with type 1 diabetes. Clinical outcomes were good in 23 cases. Conclusion : SNL should be considered in children with cervical lymphadenopathy regardless of fever or pain. SNL seems not rare in pediatric groups in Korea.

River characteristics in South Korea has been affected by seasonal climatic variability due to climate change and by remarkable land cover change due to rapid economic growth. In this regard, the roles of river management is getting more important to eco-system and human community in watersheds of South Korea. Understanding river characteristics including direct runoff and baseflow, the first step of river management, can give a significant contribution to sustainable river environment. Therefore, the objective of this study is to quantify the contributions of the direct runoff and baseflow to river streamflow. For this, we used the BFLOW and WHAT programs to conduct baseflow separation for 71 streamflow gauge stations in Han River system, South Korea. The results showed that baseflow index for 71 stations ranges from 0.42 to 0.78. Also, gauge stations which have baseflow index more than 0.5 occupied 76% of a total stations. However, baseflow index can be overestimated due to human impacts such as discharge from dams, reservoirs, and lakes. This study will be used as fundamental information to understand river characteristics in river management at the national level.
Depth perception enhancement based on chromostereopsis in a 3D display

This study was conducted to enhance the cubic effect by representing an image with a sense of three-dimensional (3D) depth,using chromostereopsis, among the characteristics of human visual perception. An algorithm that enhances the cubic effect,based on the theory that the cubic effect of the chromostereoptic effect and the chromostereoptic reversal effect depends on the lightness of the background, classifies the layers of the 3D image input into the foreground, middle, and background layers according to the depth of the image input. It suits the characteristics of human visual perception because it controls the color factor that was adaptively detected through experiments on each layer; and it can achieve an enhanced cubic effect that is suitable for the characteristics of the image input.

Background:Physcion is an anthraquinone from rhubarb (rhizomes of Rheum tanguticum) and has been reported to haveanti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antifungal, and anti-cancer activities. However, the growth inhibitory activity against human cancercells and the underlying molecular mechanisms have been poorly determined. This study was designed to investigate the anti-proliferativeactivity of physcion by induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human MDA-MB-231 triple negative breast cancer cell line. Methods:MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with physcion, and the anti-proliferative activity was evaluated by the sulforhodamine B assay. The mechanisms of action for the growth inhibitory activity of physcion were evaluated by flow cytometry for cell cycle distribution,and by Western blot for the assessment of potential target proteins. Results:Physcion showed a significant anti-proliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. Flow cytometric analysisindicated that physcion markedly induced the accumulation of cells in the G0/G1 phase and the increase of cell population in the sub-G1phase. The G0/G1 cell cycle arrest by physcion was associated with the down-regulation of Cyclin D1, Cyclin A, CDK4, CDK2, c-Mycand phosphorylated Rb protein expressions. The increase of sub-G1 peak by physcion was closely correlated with the induction ofapoptosis,which was confirmed by the induction of cleaved poly-(adenosine diphosphate ribose) polymerase, activation of Caspases, and suppressionof Bid and Bcl-2 expression. Conclusions:The induction of G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis might be one of the plausible mechanisms of actions for theanti-proliferative activity of physcion in human breast cancer cells.

Since Klaus Schwab mentioned the keyword of the fourth industrial revolution in the Davos Forum, revolutionary changes have occurred in all areas, ranging from information communication, manufacturing, transportation, finance, healthcare, education, and military. While these changes are anticipated to be a positive change in technological productivity and enhance the convenience of human life, there is also a significant downside to the anticipated problems of job insecurity and the dangers of military abuse. In particular, the innovative development of artificial intelligence due to deep-learning techniques implies serious social problems as they begin to replace much of human intelligence. In this paper, we discussed the role of the humanities in terms of both artificial intelligence and its social influence and its underlying trends, and discussed the role of humanities.
