        Avifauna of Gungdae Oreum and its seasonal changes in the Jeju Eastern Oreum Group in Jeju Island, Korea

        “Oreum” is a local common name for a volcanic cone in Jeju Island, the Republic of Korea. Oreums in theJeju Eastern Oreum Group (JEOG), located in the eastern mid-mountain region of Jeju, have beenthreatened by increasing tourism and associated development pressures; however, year-round monitoringactivities on their ecological values have rarely been implemented. This study aimed to provide forthe first time weekly monitoring information on the avifauna and its seasonal changes at GungdaeOreum, covered by planted forest stands and located at the eastern end of the JEOG, to bridge ourknowledge gap on local ecosystems of the JEOG.We surveyed the avifauna weekly for 51 weeks from July2017 to July 2018 and documented a total of 4,763 birds from 69 species, including nine nationallyprotected species and 22 breeding species. Species richness and diversity indices calculated in eachsurvey effort were not significantly changed by seasons, probably because the majority of the avifauna inthe JEOG was dominated by common resident forest birds. However, seasonal rarefaction curves revealedthat more frequent and repeated surveys may document more species especially in spring and autumnmigration seasons, suggesting that diverse migratory birds would pass through the JEOG. The computedasymptotic richness was 83 species (95% confidence interval: 73e116), which is higher than the observedspecies richness (69 species) recorded over a year. This result also emphasizes the importance of longtermand multiyear monitoring programs with constant and standardized sampling efforts to betterunderstand the local avifauna and biodiversity in forested environments.

        국내 온대 혼효림에 서식하는 산림성 조류의 번식기 개체군 모니터링 방법에 대한 비교

        Birds are effective ecological indicators but there is no national protocol in place to monitor population dynamics of forest birds in Korea. To support the establishment of future monitoring protocols, we compared the results of two generally used monitoring methods for forest bird surveys in two temperate mixed forests in central Korea. There was no statistical difference in the number of species and individuals detected per unit survey effort when comparing line transects and point counts. The number of species and individuals were higher in a five-minute count than in a three-minute point count, but the total accumulated number of expected observed species showed no difference between the two count durations. The number of observed species and individuals increased in both methods as plot radius or transect width increased, suggesting that multi-layer or multi-band surveys may be useful for quantitative and qualitative objectives. The decreasing number of observed species and individuals after sunrise suggested that bird monitoring should be conducted earlier in the morning, within four hours after sunrise. To detect 70% of the total number of species, 7.0 to 7.6 survey hours, equivalent to 42 three-minute counts (95% confidence interval [CI]: 26 to 61) or 33 five-minute counts (95% CI: 19 to 53) were needed for unlimited radius point counts. On the other hand, 4.8 survey hours, equivalent to 26 line transect counts (95% CI: 15 to 45) using 200-m transects with unlimited width, were required to achieve the same level of species detection. Therefore, the line transect method may be more effective than the point count method, at least in terms of local species richness assessment. For national forest bird monitoring, our data indicated that one or both survey methods can be selected as a basic protocol, based on the goals and scales of monitoring, forest types, and the conditions of the target areas. 조류는 포획과 채집에 의존하지 않고 관찰 조사를 통해 서식 현황을 평가할 수 있는 유용한 생태계 지표이다. 그러나우리나라의 산림성 조류의 개체군 변동을 파악하기 위한 통일된 모니터링 지침이 아직 없으며 이를 위한 자료도 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 이를 위한 기초 자료를 제공하기 위해 실시되었으며, 중부의 온대혼효림 두 곳에 서식하는 번식기산림성 조류를 대상으로 가장 일반적으로 사용되는 선조사 및 조사시간이 다른 정점조사를 적용하여 그 조사 결과를 비교하였다. 단위 조사노력당 관찰되는 종수 및 개체수는 선조사와 정점조사간에 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 서로 다른 연구지역의 조류상 차이를 파악할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 정점조사에서는 단위 정점당 조사 시간이 길수록 종과 개체수가 많이관찰되었으나, 조사횟수를 누적하면 뚜렷한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 정점조사와 선조사 모두 조사반경이 커질수록 단위 정점또는 구간 내에서 더 많은 종과 개체수가 관찰되었으며, 정량적 또는 정성적인 목적에 따라 활용할 수 있도록 거리에 따라구분하여 다층구조로 결과를 기록할 필요가 있다. 또한 조류의 관찰률은 일출 후 시간이 경과하면서 점차 감소하므로, 조사는 일출 후 4시간 이내의 가급적 이른 오전에 수행해야 하는 것으로 나타났다. 특정 지역의 산림성 조류의 전체 종 풍부도의70%를 파악하기 위해서는 7.0-7.6시간이 소요되는 42회(95% 신뢰한계: 26-61회)의 3분 정점조사 또는 33회(95% 신뢰한계: 19-53회)의 5분 정점조사가 필요한 것으로 예측되었다. 반면 동일한 수준의 종 풍부도 파악을 위해서는 26회(95% 신뢰구간: 15-45회)의 200 m 세부구간에 대한 선조사가 필요하며, 이는 약 4.8시간이 소요되는 것으로 평가되었다. 따라서 선조사는정점조사에 비해 대상 지역의 전체적인 종 풍부도를 파악하는데에는 보다 효율적인 방법으로 나타났다. 향후 산림성 조류조사의 목적과 규모, 현장상황 등에 따라 본 연구에서 확인된 조사방법을 택일하거나 병행하는 방법을 고려할 수 있다.

        Size and eye fleck patterns in the sexes of Kamchatka Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus osculans

        성판별은 환경변화에 따른 개체군의 영속성을 예측하기 위해서 기초적으로 진행하는 과정이다. Haematopus 속의 검은머리물떼새류에서 크기와 홍채의 반점 패턴은 성별에 따라 다른 것으로 알려져 있다. 준위협종에 해당하는 검은머리물떼새 아종(Haematopus ostralegus osculans)에서 비번식시기에 기존에 알려진 특징들이 성별을 구분하는 기준이 될 수 있는지를 검정하기 위해, 봄철 북상시기에 중간기착하는 검은머리물떼새의 신체 각 부위의 측정자료를 수집하고 홍채의 반점패턴을 촬영하여 성염색체 분석을 통해 얻은 성별 정보와 비교하였다. 검은머리물떼새류에서 알려진 일반적인 특징과 달리, 본 연구에서는 신체 각 부위의 크기나 홍채의 반점 패턴 모두 성별에 따른 차이가 보이지 않았다. 해당 아종에서 형태적 특징에 따른 성판별에 대한 구체적 정보를 얻기 위해서 서로 다른 시기, 또는 다른 개체군을 대상으로 한 추가 연구가 필요하다. Sex identification is essential to predict perpetuity of the population in a changing environment. Size and eye fleck patterns are known as indicators of sex identification in oystercatchers in the genus Haematopus. We collected information on biometrics and eye fleck patterns of the near-threatened Kamchatka Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus osculans at a stopover site in Korea during a northward migration season, to test whether these characteristics are reliable factors for sex identification in this subspecies. Unlike the common prediction, neither body size nor eye fleck pattern was related to sex in our study population. More detailed information on size and eye fleck pattern in different seasons and populations will facilitate studies on their ecology and conservation of this little-known subspecies.

        RAV1 Negatively Regulates Seed Development by Directly Repressing MINI3 and IKU2 in Arabidopsis

        A plant-specific B3 domain and AP2 domain-containing transcription factor, RAV1 acts as a negative regulator of growth in many plant species and its transcription was downregulated by BR and ABA. In this study, we found that RAV1-overexpressing transgenic plants showed abnormally developed ovules, resulting in reduced seed size, weight, and number in a silique. Interestingly, the endogenous expression of RAV1 fluctuated during seed development; it remained low during the early stage of seed development and sharply increased in the seed maturation stage. In plants, seed development is a complex process that requires coordinated growth of the embryo, endosperm, and maternal integuments. Among many genes that are associated with endosperm proliferation and embryo development, three genes consisting of SHB1, MINI3, and IKU2 form a small unit positively regulating this process, and their expression was regulated by BR and ABA. Using the floral stage-specific RNAs, we found that the expression of MINI3 and IKU2, the two downstream genes of the SHB1-MINI3-IKU2 cascade in the seed development pathway, were particularly reduced in the RAV1-overexpressing transgenic plants. We further determined that RAV1 directly binds to the promoter of MINI3 and IKU2, resulting in their repression. Direct treatment with brassinolide (BL) improved seed development of RAV1-overexpressing plants, but treatment with ABA severely worsened it. Overall, these results suggest that RAV1 is an additional negative player in the early stages of seed development, during which ABA and BR signaling are coordinated.

        Lonicera caerulea L. var. edulis Turcz et Herd. with great nutrient and commercial edible value, is a kind of wild berry resource in regions of Changbai Moutains, China. Systematic cultivation technology for its large-scale production is developed and formation of cultivated land with area of 150 hectares is established. With high-yield technology, the production yield can be increased by twice. Systematic cultivation technology and establishment of technology demonstration garden lay the foundation for construction of production base and large-scale production of Lonicera caerulea L. var. edulis Turcz et Herd.

        In Behcet`s disease, thrombocytopenia has rarely been reported in association with the hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura or in association with cyclosporine or chlorambucil in the treatment of ocular inflammatory disease and meningoencephalitis. In this paper we report a case of thrombocytopenia in a 33-year-old female with Behcet`s disease who has taken no medications for three years. After history taking, physical examination, routine laboratory and bone marrow examination, we diagnosed her case as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). She recovered with high dose steroid treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report having ITP in a patient with Behcet`s disease.

        Life cycle of Anthracophora rusticola (Coleoptera: Cetoniidae) from the commensal nests of Chinese Sparrowhawks (Accipiter soloensis)

        Commensal breeding habits of the Anthracophora rusticola (Coleoptera: Cetoniidae) in stick nests of carnivorous,piscivorous, and omnivorous birds were recently reported, but the detailed life history of the scarab beetle hasnot been thoroughly elucidated. To understand the breeding cycle of the declining A. rusticola related to that ofnesting Chinese sparrowhawks (Accipiter soloensis) in Korea, we examined six sparrowhawk nests from 2005 to2008 and reared larvae and cocoons in a cage in 2008. Each sparrowhawk nest hosted 11.3 ± 3.0 larvae andcocoons, implying that sparrowhawk nests might be the most important nesting resource of the beetles in Korea. The beetles may lay their eggs between late May and early July after nest building by sparrowhawks. Larvaewere observed from July to August in the sparrowhawk nests, and adult beetles emerged in September after amean pupal period of 25.5 days. Our results on the coinciding breeding of two commensal taxa over threemonths from May to September may provide key information regarding the life history of the commensalscarabid beetle and potential causes of the concurrent decline of both taxa in Korea.
