인격(Person) 개념에 대한 고찰: 피터 싱어와 화이트헤드의 대화를 중심으로

벤담의 공리주의와 로크의 인격 개념을 급진적으로 적용한 피터싱어의 인격개념은 기존 생각의 틀에 신선한 충격을 던져주고 있다. 왜냐하면 개체의 생존을 유지하려는 욕망을 지닌 자의식적 존재 따라서 고통을 피하고 즐거움을 추구하려는 존재에 대해 인격이라는 개념적 틀을 제공하고 있으며 이로 인해 고등동물이 인격성을 부여받을 수 있기 때문이다. 결과적으로 인간과 인격을 혼합해서 인간에게만 적용하던 기존 일반가치세계에 상당한 파문을 일으키고 있음은 두말할 것도 없다. 그러나 실질적 목적과 결과에 윤리적 초점을 두고 전개된 싱어의 한계는 근대적 인격 관념에 머물고 있다는 것이다. 또한 인격성에 모든 동물이 포함되지 않을뿐더러 그 외의 다른 여타 개체는 제외에 되어있다. 화이트헤드의 인격 개념은 싱어의 인격 개념보다 파격적이다. 그는 인격을 인간, 의식, 심지어 생명과도 구분한다. 화이트헤드에게는 비인간적 인격, 비의식적 인격, 비생명적 인격이 존재하는 것이다. 화이트헤드는 인격과 의식을 구분지었다. 인격은 의식 이전에 존재하는 것이고 따라서 인격을 기반으로 의식이 도출된다. 또한 그의 인격 개념은 인격적 질서를 의식이나 합리성에 두지 않음으로써 신체와 인격을 연결시킬 근거를 제공해 준다. 그래서 비생명적 인격과 “살아있는 인격”의 구분이 가능하다. 그러므로 동물뿐 아니라 사물에 이르기까지 윤리적 태도를 취할 수 있는 방향을 열어준다. 두 사람 모두 인간과 인격을 구분, 통상적 인격 개념의 틀을 벗어나 고등동물에게까지 적용시키고 있다는 공통점을 볼 수 있다. 한편 화이트헤드의 인격개념은 싱어의 근대적 인격개념의 범위를 뛰어넘어 우주적으로 확장시키고 있으며 생명과 비생명적 특성으로 인격개념을 세분화하고 있다. 세계 구성요소와 모든 생명체를 하나의 유기체적연관성을 지닌 테두리 내에서 조명할 때, 미립자의 소통을 알려주는 양자물리학, 동물 및 자연에 대한 긴밀하고 급증하는 관심과 관계양상 등이 확산되고 있는 현실에서 싱어를 넘어서서 화이트헤드의 인격개념은 미래사회를 향한 깊고 풍부한 통찰을 가능하게 할 것이다. 포스트 휴먼(post-human)상황의 도래를 짐작할 수 있는 21세기에는 전통적인 기계-동물-인간의 구분과 위계가 사라지고 이 세 가지 요소가 서로 뒤섞이는 충격적인 시대로 접어들 가능성이 농후하다. 따라서 그 윤리적 상황은 더욱 복잡해질 것이다. 이러한 시대에 인격에 대한 물음은 더욱 더 깊어지고, 절실한 물음으로 부상하게 된다. 싱어와 화이트헤드의 ‘인격’ 개념은 동물 및 식물과 무생물, 기계적 및 본래적 인간의 상호관련과 작용의 얽힘에서 인격을 논의할 수 있는 존재론적인 배경이 될 수 있다. 특히 화이트헤드의 인간, 의식, 그리고 생명과 구분되는 순차적으로 사회화된 사회로서의 ‘인격’으로서의 개념은 차후에 포스트 휴먼적 상황에서 윤리를 논구할 때 중요한 자원이 될 것이다. The concept of Peter Singer`s personality which radically combined Bentham`s utilitarianism and Loeke`s concept of personality gives a new frame for understanding what personality is. He insists that the concept of personality should be broadened to contain all being that has self-mechanisms to maintain itself and experiences pain and pleasure, which provides a basis for the higher animal interpreted as having personality. The concept consequentially reverberates the field of philosophy as it contradicts the traditional philosophy`s point of view of personality.only human possesses personality. However, the limit of his philosophy still exists. The concept roots in the practical object and consequence in ethics and therefore is considered not free from the modern philosophy. Also, the concept of his personality could not contain all animals and other beings. Whitehead`s concept of personality is more radical than Singer`s one. He distinguishes personality from human, consciousness, or even life. According to Whitehead, non-human personality, non-conscious personality, and even non-life personality could be in existence. He distinguishes personality from consciousness. Personality exists even before consciousness and thus consciousness is derived from personality. His concept of personal order does not rely on consciousness or rationality, which could connect body and personality. This enables the distinguishment non-human personality from “life personality.” This philosophy opens a new prospect that ethics could be applied to not merely animals but objects. Whitehead and Singer, both approaches have a commonality distinguishing human from personality and making the range of personality more comprehensive. However, Whitehead`s concept of personality not merely exceeds the limit of Singer`s personality concept but also extends the domain of personality cosmically. Also, He differentiates the life personality from non-life personality in personality domain. Given the organic perspective becomes more important as quantum physics becomes spot-lighted and concerns of animals and environment becomes deeper, the concept of Whitehead`s personality would provide a noble insight for the future society. In the twenty-first century, as post-humanism is estimated to dominate the world, it is very possible that the traditional division of human-versus-animal-versus-machine would become meaningless, which might cause a big confusion in the future society. Axiomatically, the ethical issues would become much more complicated than before. In such world, the question of personality may become more important. Singer and Whitehead`s concepts of ``personality`` could provide a ontological base for integrating human, animals, plants, and inanimate objects in the frame of personality. Especially, Whitehead`s personality as the ordered and socialized society that differentiates personality from human, consciousness, or life could have many implications for ethical contemplation in post-humanistic society.
