Vol.23 No.3

This paper compares and contrasts the female protagonists in Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928) and Wallace Thurman's The Blacker the Berry (1929) in terms of race, sexuality, and identity. In Quicksand, Larsen delineates the agony of educated mulatto woman named Helga Crane, who travels from Alabama to various places including Harlem in an attempt to explore her truer self. However, the environment that encompasses her is so harsh that Helga is unable to find a comfortable place. Thurman, in The Blacker the Berry, portrays another educated black girl named Emma Lou Morgan. Ostracized from her Idaho community, Emma Lou travels to Los Angeles and to Harlem with a view to searching for her true identity. Though the two novels suggest the predicament of the black female intellectuals, the ways the two female protagonists confront the situation are contrasting. While Helga is stuck in the quagmires of the South due to her obsessed racial and sexual identity, Emma Lou overcomes her racial dilemma by transforming herself into a more confident black intellectual.

Vol.14 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to critique British imperialism in Bapsi Sidhwa's Cracking India (1991) by analyzing the partition of India from the perspective of nation, religion, and women. Dubbed "Punjabi-Parsi-Indian-Pakistani," Sidhwa is in a position where she can view the partition from an objective and neutralized stance. Rather than focusing on the lives of nationally well-known political figures such as Gandhi, Nehru, or Jinnah, Sidhwa delves deep into the miserable lives of the lower classes before and after the partition. First, I analyze the process of the partition, as it is performed through the manipulation of British imperialism. By adopting the viewpoint of an 8-year-old Lenny, who is the daughter of a Parsi family, Sidhwa is able to critique both British imperialism as well as the male-dominated Indian society where the treatment of women is unthinkably harsh. Second, I focus on the tragedy of the confrontation of three religions, Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh. Religious people fight each other while they were forced to move from South to North or from North to South. I argue that the religious conflicts have much to do with political issues. Third, I want to argue that women are the major victims of the partition. Ayah, Hamida, and Papoo are victims of male-dominated India during the partition. They symbolize the feminized India, which is exploited and victimized by British Imperialism. Even though Ayah is shattered by Ice-candy-man while working as a prostitute and dancer, she decides to return to her home in India, which shows her challenge against male-dominated India as well as against British colonialism. In conclusion, Sidhwa tries to heal the suffering of the Indian women who fell victim to male-dominated Indian society by criticizing the problems of British imperialism. In addition, by dealing with the lives of silenced people, Sidhwa asks readers not to forget the historical tragedy and not to repeat the tragedy again.

Vol.22 No.1

The objective of the study is to investigate factors affecting consumers' purchase intention toward imported organic agricultural products. To accomplish the goal of the study a consumer survey was administered for randomly selected households residing in capital area. Results show that the more consumers trust a safety of domestic products and a certification system, the less they purchase the imported products. In addition, it is demonstrated that educated consumers are relatively less reluctant to imported organic agricultural products. Finally, an improvement of domestic certification system, decrease of price of environmentally friendly agricultural products, and aggressive promotion are required to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic environmentally friendly agricultural products.

Vol.15 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Toni Morrison's Beloved in terms of the representation of the indomitable black men and the white male patrons in order to reexamine the black and white relationship. By paying attention to the minor characters rather than the protagonists of the two novels, this paper first deals with the black male characters such as Brother Tarp and Brother Tod Clifton in Invisible Man and Paul D and Sixo in Beloved. Next, concerning the white patrons who help black people, I compare and contrast Mr. Norton in Invisible Man and Mr. Bodwin in Beloved. In doing so, I argue that Ellison and Morrison attempt to show the dynamic resistance and frustration of the black male characters in a racialized social system, delineating the complex and multifaceted spectrum of white patrons during and after the period of slavery. I also emphasize that both of the novels show the writers' unceasing efforts to make an equal and humane society by overcoming racial confrontations between whites and blacks.

Vol.41 No.4

Agricultural water plays a significant role in terms of enhancing food self-sufficiency and food security. The supply of agricultural water based on the irrigation facilities contributes to improving agricultural productivity. The objective of this study is to explore both farmers’ and non-farmers’ perceptions and satisfactions about a government policy of improving irrigation facilities. Also, the paper investigates factors affecting their satisfaction about the government maintenance and management project of irrigation facilities. The results demonstrate that farmers, who insist the necessity of renovation of a reservoir located where they live in, are apt to be relatively dissatisfied with the government project. The magnitudes of marginal effects indicate that farmers’ satisfaction living in an agricultural area is higher than that of non-farmers. Finally, it is shown that farmers with higher satisfaction toward a government undertaking of improving a reservoir tend to be satisfied with a government project of repairing an irrigation and drainage canal as well.

Colorism, Child Abuse, and the Recovery of Womanhood in The Blacker the Berry and God Help the Child

Vol.59 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast Wallace Thurman’s The Blacker the Berry (1929) and Toni Morrison’s God Help the Child (2015) in terms of colorism, child abuse, and the recovery of womanhood. In spite of their differences of gender, period of their life, and their writing style, Thurman and Morrison share remarkable similarities. They are keenly concerned with the critique of racist American society, finding ways to improve the social condition for black people. I argue that the following are similarities between the two novels. First, Emma Lou in The Blacker the Berry and Bride in God Help the Child are the hapless victims of colorism in the American society. Secondly, the two novels make poignant critique of child abuse. Thirdly, the two female protagonists recover their womanhood and maturity after confronting colorism, child abuse, and their encounter with men. On the other hand, the following are differences between the two novels. First, while Emma Lou continuously feels low self-esteem due to her dark skin, Bride takes pride in her blackness. Secondly, while Emma Lou’s mother does not give serious attention to her daughter, Bride’s mother tries to communicate with her daughter at the novel’s end. Third, while Emma Lou did not have close friends or a lover, Bride has a lover and a child as well as a good friend. In conclusion, the two novels show important messages to the readers: Though colorism is caused by white supremacy, it brings about serious problems in the black community when colorism is continuously internalized among the black people. Toni Morrison, who is a female writer, seems to emphasize the importance of motherhood and the healing process more than Wallace Thurman.

Reclaiming Subjective Womanhood: Subversive Women in Bobbie Ann Mason's “Shiloh” and Toni Morrison's Paradise

Vol.15 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast women's position in a patriarchal society and their subversive role in Bobbie Ann Mason's “Shiloh” (1982) and Toni Morrison's Paradise (1997). Though the two American female novelists have different ethnic backgrounds, Mason and Morrison delve into the predicament of women in the 1970s in their works, showing the women's search for their new identity under the male-dominant social structure. Norma Jean Moffitt in Mason's short story “Shiloh” and Mavis Albright in Morrison's Paradise present striking similarities in the following characteristics as protagonists: 1) They confront patriarchal husbands and domineering mothers, 2) They have their children die through negligence in a car and experience trauma because of it, and 3) They finally decide to leave their husbands by transforming themselves into subjective women. I argue that these two female writers try to show the women's situation in the 1970s in order to critique a patriarchal social structure.
