Vol.62 No.1

Fashion cultural products represents cultural trend, and they are produced a lot in Korea to express the Korean culture and style. They are also tools that embody images of Korea. This study mainly focuses on the Korean traditional-patterned ornaments as fashion cultural products. Therefore, this study aims at developing a framework of consumers` attitudes and consumption behaviors about Korean traditional-patterned ornaments, examining how the characteristics are changed according to shopping orientation. For this purpose, a quantitative survey was carried out using 455 questionnaires from women in their 20s and over. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, cluster analysis, and χ2-test. Findings of this study were as follows. First, half of the respondents were found to possess Korean traditional- patterned ornaments. However, consumers had positive attitudes and tend to purchase them for their own use rather than gifts, demonstrating that the potential for the market is large enough. Second, in accordance with their shopping orientation, consumers were sub-divided into four groups: trend/brand oriented, practicality/pleasure oriented, convenience oriented, and passive shoppers. The trend/brand oriented group showed highest levels of preference regarding purchase intentions of Korean traditional-patterned ornaments. This group also showed the strongest purchasing power on fashion items among the four groups. Third, this study presented animal, plant, geometric and abstract patterns to the respondents to examine their attitudes. It was found that consumers prefered plant-patterned ornaments rather than the others, demonstrating that they have stronger preference and purchase intention toward ornaments with more natural images.

Vol.49 No.1

This paper examines tour narratives of Laura: A Creole Plantation in Louisiana as an “invented tradition” of the nationalistic project for consolidating the American identity. With marketing efforts to create an authentically satisfying tourist experience, history is transformed into a cultural heritage while past memories are reassembled and reaccommodated. This mediated version of a tradition becomes important in the construction of a national identity. This paper proposes to dig up seemingly invisible ideological effects of heritage tour narratives. The tour narratives of Laura: Creole Plantation produces the myth of Americanness which seems to state that racial others were allowed to be an American citizen. When Laura rejects the traditional, immoderate Creole world and chooses to live as a modern, liberated American woman, this exotification of Creoles renders the Other invisible and silenced. Thus, a complexity of tour narratives embedded in the heritage site points to problematics in that a constructed heritage instills nationalism but silences the history of slavery and racial discrimination.

Vol.52 No.2

This paper explores the political imagination in Pauline Hopkins’ Of One Blood, or The Hidden Self (1902-1903). During the time that she wrote, the contrived delusions of racial purity provoke racial hysteria and the fear of racial passing. Hopkins converts this racial fantasy to arguing that all white and black in America are “of one blood.” Despite the taboo of miscegenation, Hopkins proposes the alternative polity and the citizen identity based on the hybridity of Mulatto/a. Hopkins encodes the public and political concerns in the very form of melodrama. Conflicts between virtue and vice in Of One Blood are separated from the racial legibility and become the psychological, historical, political issues, which negotiate the social tensions in post-Reconstruction years. The desire for transforming the political model of white supremacy is alluded to the family romance of replacing white paternal authority. With a new model of the mulatto/a fraternity, Of One Blood implies Hopkins’ radical imagination on political equality and the racial uplift in the Jim Crow era.

Vol.53 No.1

By the 1840s the racial question was at the heart of scholarly discussion in the United States, and few writers could avoid vigorous discussions of superior and inferior races. This paper argues that “The Birthmark,” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1843, is coded the political discourses on race and gender ideology. Aylmer, a newly wedded scientist, is anxious to remove a crimson stain upon Georgiana’s white cheek, which might indicate the ‘one drop of blood’ of African Americans in her artery. Aylmer desperately but unsuccessfully allocates the proper ‘place’ for wife, husband, underworker, white and black, not only from the fear of contamination by crossing the color line but also from the desire to fixate the normative gender roles of the middle-class ideology. His experiment and its failure imply deep anxiety of the white-men-nation to maintain the difference, which is a national fantasy undermined by the ineffaceable birthmark and unforgettable laughter of Aminadab.

        서만길,한우,이경규,유범희,이유리,김이영,김현우,Seo, Man-Kil,Han, Woo-Sang,Lee, Kyung-Kyu,Yu, Bum-Hee,Lee, Yu-Ri,Kim, E-Yong,Kim, Hyun-Woo 대한수면의학회 1999 수면·정신생리 Vol.6 No.1

Objectives: We explored the characteristics of physiological variables such as electrodermal response(EDR) and electromyography(EMG) in patients with insomnia, panic disorder, and other anxiety disorders. we aimed to decide the minimum sessions in biofeedback treatment to make the treatment effective and examine the effects of long-term biofeedback treatment by measuring the physiological variables. Methods: Thirty seven outpatients who received biofeedback treatment were divided into 3 groups according to the number of biofeedback sessions(patients who received 4-5 sessions, who received 6-9 sessions, and who received more than 10 sessions). We measured mean and delta values of EDR and EMG levels, and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale(HARS), and Slef-Relaxation Inventory(SRI) in all patients. Data were analyzed by t-test and repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The mean and delta values of EDR and EMG levels were not different among the 3 groups during the first 4 biofeedback sessions. However, patients who received more than 10 biofeedback sessions had higher baseline mean EDR value(F=2.233, p=0.036) in the first session, compared with other patients. In patients who received more than 10 biofeedback sessions, mean EDR was significantly reduced after $5^{th}$ session(F=10.41, p<0.01). They showed significant improvement in SRI scores at 12th biofeedback session(t=2.726, p<0.05) and in HARS scores at $6^{th}$(t=3.10, p<0.05) and $12^{th}$ biofeedback session(t=10.93, p<0.001). Conclusions: Wesuggest that patients should receive more than 5 biofeedback sessions to experience internal cues and get a good clinical response to biofeedback treatment.

Vol.29 No.-

This article examines how the anxiety and symptom of the British imperial century are exposed in the early spy novels published in Britain during the early 1900's. In The Secret Agent (1907) and The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), Joseph Conrad and John Buchan describe a defense of the British society to counter the invasion of 'the Other' and foreign enemies. To be specific, both spy novels doubt with paranoia on the contamination of 'Englishness' by depicting the enemies as monstrous figures. However, a defense enervates and turns out an impossible project since it is difficult to set up a boundary which distinguishes between the British self and the Other. Thus, the anxiety that haunts both texts is not a fear of the Other but a fear of the same; and these espionage activities between the First World countries actually connect rather than divide Britain and its rival Europe. The European male rivals cause a fear to a British male protagonist with camouflages in both spy novels. The class, gender, racial Other who can not be identified with the British male counterpart in both texts are erased and silenced in the other dark side of the texts, exposing the impossibility of British identity formation mechanism.

Vol.44 No.2

This article is to examine Unpunished: A Mystery, Charlotte Perkins Gilman`s final detective novel, by reading it as a female gothic novel and a survival story of a postmodernist female subject. The narrative of this novel changes the fundamental question of a detective novel, ``who killed the dead man,`` into why the murderer has to kill this man. By doing so, the novel focuses on an aggressor who deserves to die and a female victim released from domestic violence. This novel is, thus, a female gothic novel which reveals the life of a suffering heroine who is sexualized as an object of desire and victimized by a powerful male villain. The heroine, Jacqueline, deliberates the survival strategies of role-playing and masquerade. She challenges the oppression of a villain, Mr. Vaughn, with studied posture of conformity as if she acted on stage. With scars on her face, which serve as a mask to hide her feeling, Jacqueline acts as a perfect housekeeper. Moreover, Jacqueline makes Mr. Vaughn die from heart attack by wearing a mask of Iris, her sister, who was victimized by Mr. Vaughn and committed suicide. This doubly masked Jacqueline is not only an active heroine in the female gothic novel but also a gender performative subject who takes up not only femininity but also masculinity. Jacqueline`s gender performance is well represented in her three different names, Mrs. Warner/ Jacqueline/ Jack. Mrs. Warner seems to represent a woman who safely settles in the male-dominant patriarchal society. Yet she is also called as Jacqueline, an equal pair of Iris, her sister. However, called as a male name Jack, she plays a role as protector of children and her sister. This protean changeability of her names embodies her gender-flexibility which makes her survive despite patriarchal oppression. To sum up, in Unpunished, Gilman depicts a postmodernist female subject who successfully overthrows the Father`s law and survives "mediaeval" gothic conventions imposed on woman.
