선비문화의 역사적 전개와 미래 ― 생명, 평화, 공익, 백성, 나라 사랑 ―
한영우 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2009 한국문화 Vol.45 No.-
Korean Cultures have been influenced by the foreign cultures from ancient to modern periods. Buddhism and Confucianism had been introduced to Korea from China. Modern Western cultures have been also influxed into Korea in 20th century. However, the Korean’s cultural identity is much different from that of Chinese and Western people. It is due to the Korean’s indigenous natural environments and beliefs made in the beginnings of history. Korean's original beliefs have been called as Sŏnbi-Spirits from ancient time, and Sŏnbi-Spirits have been developed into more deepened political ideologies throughout the Koreo, Joseon, and modern times. The main contents of Sŏnbi-Spirits are loves of all lives, natural environment, peace, social community, peoples, and motherland. And Sŏnbi-Spirits promoted the democratization, modernization and national identity in Korean style during the all the times. The main cause of the brilliant achievement of Korean economic growth after the liberation from Japanese occupation seems to be relied upon the eagerness for education of Korean people. And the Korean’s eagerness for education originated from the Sŏnbi-Spirits, because the education was the main way of success in life during the pre-modern periods. The civil examinations were the ladder of success in Koreo and Joseon Dynasties. In the future, I think, Sŏnbi-Spirits should be noticed by the Korean and world as well. Because those might be one of the alternatives of current civilizations neglecting global peace, natural environments, and social community.

The Formality & Protocol Manuals from the latter half of the Chosun dynasty contain invaluable data and materials which are truly essential to historical studies in various fields like politics, economy, lifestyles, arts, architecture, handcraft items etc. And the Manuals themselves also feature artistic beauty. So not only utilizing them but also trying to preserve them in perfect condition become a very important task, and in order to achieve that objective, creating databases or photoprinting or even republishing the Manuals become extremely necessary. As of this date, the Kyujanggak Archives at the Seoul National University have currently completed the task of photoprinting or republishing 34 Manuals. But considering the total amount of existing Manuals, it should be noted that this is only the beginning. Added to these matters, proceeding with the task of bibliographical documentation is also an urgent matter. Most of the Manuals are hand-written ones, and in most cases there are slight and little differences or discrepancies which cannot be ignored among various versions of a single item, in terms of sizes, page numbers, featured designs, and even in the safe to say that each of every Manuals occupy a unique characteristic of their own, which should be catalogues accordingly. And determining who is the prominent figure in a particular Manual is also important, as in many cases there would be no specific mention of the person in question either in the title or in the contents. There are other problems as well, as there are such cases in which Manuals share the same title yet being totally different in nature and contents. All these aspects make detailed, coordinated efforts to examine all the existing Manuals extremely necessary. Yet the Manuals are scattered throughout the country, and also in foreign areas, so comparative studies are quite difficult to launch. Existing bibliographical introductions are also lacking in necessary details. The Kyujanggak Archives had already recognized these problems, and have been continuing its efforts for over two years to establish a proper and also detailed bibliographical database. In this project, every little details have all been accounted for, and the existence or whereabouts of similar or identical versions or even republished versions have all been verified, identified and confirmed. The result is the <Kyujanggak Sojang Euigwae Jonghab Mokrok(The Catalogue of Formality & Protocol Manuals Currently in Custody of the Kyjanggak Archives)>, which contains lists of existing Manuals everywhere(including the ones at the Jangseogak Archives, or even in France and other areas as well).
