Background and Objectives:The nasal polyp is the most common form of mass lesion in the nose with an unclear etiology and pathogenesis among patients in Asia. Also, the pathological characteristic of nasal polyps in these patients is eosinophil infiltration. These findings, as reported in Asia, are distinct from those of the West. Moreover, the role of eosinophil is recently found to be on the increase even in Asia. So, we investigated the proportion of eosinophil infiltration in the nasal polyp among patients in Korea. Materials and Methods:The study group consisted of 35 patients with a mean age of 43 years (ranging from 6 to 72 years). Tissue samples were taken via endoscopic sinus surgeries from the nasal polyp, inflammatory sinus mucosa, and the inferior turbinate. We compared 5 parameters of mucosal histopathology. Result:The incidence of a severe eosinophilic infiltration in the nasal polyp was 70%. Nasal polyp and inflammatory sinus mucosa had a larger eosinophil, lymphocyte and polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration than a normal nasal mucosa. Also, the nasal polyp and sinus mucosa had a more severe basement membrane thickening and goblet cell hyperplasia. Distinctively, the nasal polyp had a severe eosinophilic infiltration and a more thickened basement membrane. Conclusion:The present histopathologic feature of the nasal polyp among Koreans indicates that cases of eosinophilic nasal polyp seems to be on the increase. Purpose: Many randomized clinical trials have been performed to treat a colorectal neoplasm with the exclusion of descending colon cancer. The aim of the present study was to investigate the difference in surgical outcomes between a laparoscopic left hemicolectomy and a conventional open left hemicolectomy for descending colon cancer. Methods: A retrospective study of ninety patients with descending colon cancer, who underwent a laparoscopic (LAP) or open left hemicolectomy (OS) between May 1998 and December 2009 at Kyungpook National University Hospital, was performed. Clinicopathological and surgical outcomes were compared between the LAP and the OS for descending colon cancer. Results: The baseline characteristics, including age, gender, body mass index, history of prior abdominal surgical history and tumor location, were similar between the two groups. The mean operation time was 156.2 minutes for the LAP group and 223.2 minutes for the OS group (P < 0.001). Intraoperative blood loss was significantly greater in the OS group (37.5mL vs. 80.4 mL; P = 0.039). The postoperative recovery in the LAP group was faster, as reflected by the shorter time to pass gas and the shorter hospital stay. Pathological examinations showed the surgery to be equally radical in the two groups. The median follow-up was 21 months and there were 3 distant metastases (8.5%) during follow-up in the LAP group, but no port-site or local recurrence. Conclusion: A laparoscopic left hemicolectomy is a technically safe and feasible procedure for treating descending colon cancer. Prospective multi-center trials are necessary to establish the LAP as the standard treatment for descending colon cancer.
Strawberry Harvesting Robot for Bench-type Cultivation

Purpose: An autonomous robot was developed for harvesting strawberries cultivated in bench-type systems. Methods: The harvest robot consisted of four main components: an autonomous vehicle, a manipulator with four degrees of freedom (DOF), an end effector with two DOFs, and a color computer vision system. Strawberry detection was performed based on 3D image and distance information obtained from a stereo CCD color camera and a laser device, respectively. Results: In this work, a Cartesian type manipulator system was designed, including an intermediate revolute axis and a double driven arm-based joint axis, so that it could generate collision-free motions during harvesting. A DC servomotor-driven end-effector, consisting of a gripper and a cutter, was designed for gripping and cutting the strawberry stem without damaging the strawberry itself. Real-time position tracking algorithms were developed to detect, recognize, trace, and approach strawberries under natural light conditions. Conclusion: The developed robot system could harvest a strawberry within 7 seconds without damage.
