There are many practical situations where electromagnetic waves interact with composite materials. The knowledge of interaction of electromagnetic waves in composite structures is important for designing the shielding structure for antenna such as radome. Recently, radomes are constructed in the form of foam core sandwich structures that have many mechanical advantages such as high strength, long fatigue life, low density and adaptability to the intended function of structure. However, the propagation of electromagnetic waves is affected by high anisotropic permeability and loss tangent of the composite skin. Even though many investigations were focused on the propagation of electromagnetic waves through composite materials in the 2D plane in last several decades, little investigations were carried out to understand adequately the propagation of the electromagnetic waves as function of incident angle in the foam core sandwich structures. In this paper, the analytical 3D model and method to predict the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the foam core sandwich structures were proposed.

The need to develop and use light-weight structural components in the design of aircraft and automotive vehicles has brought increasing applications of composite materials. To evaluate elastic constants which are one of important mechanical properties of composite materials a method of experimentation is conceived and an experimental set-up is constructed to evaluate elastic constants of composites. The experimental method utilizes resonance phenomenon which occurs when natural frequencies of materials match externally applied frequencies. Flexural resonance frequencies are determined to evaluate Young's moduli E} and E2 which torsional resonance frequencies are measured to evaluate shear moduli G_13 and G_23. The experimentally determined values of elastic constants are compared with those values computed from theoretical considerations utilizing the rule of mixtures to establish the extent of agreement between the experimental and theoretical methods.
