New materials have been developed with empirical, trial-and-error techniques prominent in the natural sciences. Integration of design engineering and materials science has been limited mostly to the selection of an appropriate material from a finite set of available materials with experimentally determined properties. In contrast, materials designers wish to tailor the material structure itself along with associated processing paths to achieve desirable material properties and performance. By concurrently designing a product and its constituent materials, innovative, high-performance, product-material systems can be realized. Moreover, as we increasingly fabricate and utilize multiphase materials, cellular materials, and heterogeneous MEMS, NEMS, and biomedical devices, it is nearly impossible to distinguish issues of materials design from those of the design of larger systems or assemblies. Certainly, it is essential to design material concurrently along with a complex product to achieve breakthroughs in robust, superior, system performance.

The KOMPSAT-l which was designed for 3 years mission operation was launched on Dec. 21 1999. MCC(Mission Control Center) has conducted the normal operation with continuous monitoring and trend analysis of the satellite subsystems, and succeeded to complete the KOMPSAT-1 mission operations for 3 years life time with support of subsystem engineers. In this paper, In-Orbit performances of each subsystem and the availability of system operation were analyzed and reviewed. The performance degradation of EPS, TC&R, AOC5, TCS, PS, and payloads except SPS were kept within design requirements. It was estimated that the operational life time can be extended two more years considering the long term performance of subsystems and the estimation of fuel consumption.
