This article investigates translation changes in the English translation of Korean presidential speeches, especially the New Year’s addresses made during the course of presidency since 2008 by President Lee Myung-bak. It illustrates internal changes found in the original speeches during the course of presidency in order to discover how internal changes affect the translation corpus such as the use of pronouns and frequent words. It shows that methodology of Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies can be used effectively to reveal changes both in the originals and in the translations in combination of a quantitative with a qualitative analysis. It is found that changes are identified at various levels: omissions, additions, and lexical changes at word level, tense and modal changes at phrase level, and theme-rheme changes at clausal level. In addition, apparent agency by means of the first person pronouns is identified in the translation.
15세관람가 영미권 DVD의 나쁜 언어(bad language) 자막번역 연구
최진실 한국통역번역학회 2016 통역과 번역 Vol.18 No.1
There is a constant string tension between movie importers/distributors and the Korea Media Rating Board (hereafter KMRB) as to which rating an imported movie would be labelled, because the rating has a decisive impact on the ticket power and profit in South Korea (Park, 2013; Korean Film Council, 2014). Although ‘violence’ and ‘sexuality’, the two critical factors of Korean movie ratings as stipulated by the KMRB, can be judged not only by the screen but also its linguistic embodiments, few studies have addressed how the Korean subtitles of ‘bad language’ (Dobao, 2006), including choices of ellipsis, may influence the ratings in the South Korean context. With its focus on English DVDs rated as ‘PG15’ in South Korea, equivalent to ‘PG13’ in the US, this study explores Korean subtitles of English bad languages and their acceptability, influenced by, and dependent on, the rating. It focuses especially on the criterion of vulgarity of lines, one of the 7 criteria that KMRB stipulates for the movie rating. The study reveals KMRB’s very low acceptance tendency of sexual intercourse terms, resulting in increasing the rating of vulgarity of lines. In contrast, KMRB is tolerant of words containing violent semantic components, such as “shit” and “damn”.

This review summarizes the recent progress in iron-oxide-based heat generators. Cancer treatment using magnetic nanoparticles as a heat generator, termed magnetic fluid hyperthermia, is a promising noninvasive approach that has gained significant interest. Most previous studies on improving the hyperthermia effect have focused on the construction of dopant-containing iron oxides. However, their applications in a clinical application can be limited due to extra dopants, and pure iron oxide is the only inorganic material approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Several factors that influence the heat generation capability of iron-oxide-based nanoparticles are summarized by reviewing recent studies on hyperthermia agents. Thus, our paper will provide the guideline for developing pure iron oxide-based heat generators with high heat dissipation capabilities.
POE 수업 모형을 적용한 생물 수업에서 탈북 학생이 보이는 학습의 특성 분석

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristic reaction of the defector students in the biology class using POE instruction model. The subjects of this study were 5 North Korean defector students attending alternative school. For this study, 14 activity classes were developed. This study was carried out by qualitative study, in which all the contents of the lesson were recorded, the data of the activity were analysed and the interview was conducted. The results of the study were as follows. First, the use of concept cards and models for the students who had difficulty in reminding scientific concepts emerged as a learning strategy that helped students to connect the science phenomena with science concepts. Second, the students did not perceive the non-equilibrium state of disagreement between the prediction stage and observation stage of the POE class model. In the explanatory phase, even if they recognized cognitive inconsistencies, it was difficult to explain them as scientific concepts. Third, it was difficult for the students to use various science concepts required in the prediction, observation, and explanation stages. Therefore, it was found out that the teachers should actively use the teaching strategies using various scaffolds. This study suggests that when the POE class is applied to the defector students, it will be difficult to lead a successful teaching only by applying the teaching model itself. In other words, using concept cards or models can help remind students of scientific concepts, or using various scaffolds actively, students have an opportunity to express their own ideas and become active learners.
