This paper presents a micro air pump based on the synthetic jet to supply reactant at the cathode side for micro fuel cells. The synthetic jet is a zero mass flux device that converts electrical energy into the momentum. The synthetic jet actuation is usually generated by a traditional PZT-driven actuator, which consists of a small cylindrical cavity, orifices and PZT diaphragms. Therefore, it is very important that the design parameters are optimized because of the simple configuration. To design the synthetic jet micro air pump, a numerical analysis has been conducted for flow characteristics with respect to various geometries. From results of numerical analysis, the micro air pump has been fabricated by the PDMS replication process. The most important design factors of the micro air pump in micro fuel cells are the small size and low power consumption. To satisfy the design targets, we used SP4423 micro chip that is high voltage output DC-AC converter to control the PZT. The SP4423 micro chips can operate from 2.2~6V power supply(or battery) and is capable of supplying up to 200V signals. So it is possible to make small size controller and low power consumption under 0.1W. The size of micro air pump was 16 × 13 × 3 mm3 and the performance test was conducted. With a voltage of 3V at 800Hz, the air pump’s flow rate was 2.4cc/min and its power consumption was only 0.15W.

This paper presents the design of inchworm motor for high precision actuator system of large displacement and high force. An inchworm actuator can perform long strokes by repeating the clamping and extension sequence. It can attain high resolution and high force from the accurate displacement of extension and contraction motion. The proposed inchworm actuator consists of two clamping parts on the top and the bottom side of the inchworm body, and one extension part in the middle of the actuator. The two clamping piezoelectric(PZT) are provide the holding force and the extending PZT is provide the displacement of tool guide. In generally, PZT has the low tensile strength and shear. Therefore, design of the inchworm motor has been focused on optimizing the pre-load housing mechanism to reduce the shear force. The preload also creates additional return forces to aid in the release of the clamping mechanisms. The detailed design of the pre-load mechanism was performed using finite element analysis. A prototypeof the inchworm motor was fabricated and tested.

In this paper, the low frequency vibration forming system is developed for micro-patterns formation on the metal substrate. many researchers have studied about micro-forming technologies such as micro deep drawing, press forming, forging, extrusion etc. for the formation of precise micro-patterns on the surface of metal substrates, multi-step forming process must be used to improve qualifies of the deformed patterns. Since the low frequency vibration forming system could easily deform the surface of metal substrates, several steps of multi-step forming process should be removed by using the low frequency vibration forming system. In order to find optimal process conditions, we have carried out low frequency vibration forming process with varying the vibration frequency from 110Hz to 500Hz.

In this paper, the ultrasonic vibration molding method is developed for forming micro patterns on the metal substrate. So many researchers study about the micro molding technology such as micro deep drawing, press forming, forging, extrusion etc. but if we want to make a micro pattern on the surface of the metal substrate, we must use multi-step forming process to maintain the size of the product or substrate. However, these problems can be solved by using ultrasonic vibration molding system. Because the ultrasonic vibration molding method deform the surface of mold easily. This paper describes the optimization techniques of ultrasonic vibration molding condition such as the frequency forming method and optimal frequency range to make a micro pattern on the metal substrate. The frequency range can be classified to ultrasonic range, high & low frequency range.

Many researchers have developed several micro-forming technologies such as micro deep drawnig, micro press forming, micro forging, extrusion etc. for forming of precise micro-patterns on a surface of metal substrate but the multi-step forming processes have been used to improve quality of the deformed patterns. The low frequency vibration forming system, which developed in the research, can not only easily deform the surface of metal substrates but also can remove the couple of steps of the conventional multi-step forming process. In order to find optimal process conditions, lots of experiments were carried out under varying the vibration frequency from 100㎐ to 500㎐. As a experimental results, The desktop micro forming system has obtained better results from low frequency vibrations than non-vibration.
