This study examines the socioeconomic returns to agricultural research and extension services in Korea, using multivariate time series technique and Akino-Hyami formula. Results find that the socioeconomic returns are quite competitive in case of agricultural research with 44.82% internal rate of return and very high in case of extension services with 207.82% internal rate of return. Agricultural production responds to the agricultural research shock about four years after the shock. The magnitudes of the impacts increase until a peak is reached nine years after the initial expenditures and the impacts declines to a zero level after about twenty years. This lag lengths are consistent to the usual literature on research, which finds lags of seven to thirty years. Agricultural production responds to an agricultural extension shock immediately and declines to a zero level after about four years. Thus, the lag lengths are much shorter than those by research shock.

Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) has been widely accepted for the global planarization of multi-layer structures in semiconductor manufacturing. Copper has been the candidate metallization material for ultra-large scale integrated circuits (ULSIs), owing to its excellent electro-migration resistance and low electrical resistance. However, it still has various problems in copper CMP process. Thus, it is important to understand the effect of the process variables such as turntable speed, head speed, down force and back pressure are very important parameters that must be carefully formulated in order to achieve desired the removal rates and non-uniformity. Using a design of experiment (DOE) approach, this study was performed investigating the main effect of the variables and the interaction between the various parameters during CMP. A better understanding of the interaction behavior between the various parameters and the effect on removal rate, non-uniformity and ETC (edge to center) is achieved by using the statistical analysis techniques. In the experimental tests, the optimum parameters which were derived from the statistical analysis could be found for higher removal rate and lower non-uniformity through the above DOE results.

This study was undertaken to develop PCR primers for the identification and detection of Streptococcus mutans (by)using species-specific forward and universal reverse primers. These primers targeted the variable regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA coding gene (rDNA). The primer specificity was tested against 11S. mutans strains and 10 different species (22 strains) of oral bacteria. The primer sensitivity was determined by testing serial dilutions of the purified genomic DNA of S. mutans ATCC $25175^T$. The data showed that species-specific amplicons were obtained from all the S. mutans strains tested, which was not observed in the other species. The direct and nested PCR could detect as little as 2 pg and 2 fg of the chromosomal DNA from S. mutans ATCC $25175^T$, respectively. This shows that the PCR primers are highly sensitive and applicable to the detection and identification of S. mutans.

The spatio-temporal distribution of jellyfish in Masan Bay was investigated in this study using a numerical model. First, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model (POM) was constructed,taking into account residual flows, tides, temperature, salinity, and wind effects. A particle tracking model based on residual flow was then used to investigate the jellyfish present in Masan Port, referred to as the Heavy Industry and Gapo New Port in Masan. Jellyfish distribution was concentrated with maximum (2,533 individual) in the North Sea near Machang Bridge. Itcan be concluded that this concentration was due to multi-directional residual flows and topography effects. Residual flow currents are a dominant factor in understanding the aggregation of jellyfish, and this study used a numerical simulation of tide-induced residual currents, wind-driven currents and density currents in distinct cases to thoroughly address the topic. As a result, wind-driven currents (effect of the wind) was found to be superior to other components as an influence on the distribution of jellyfish near Machang Bridge and Modo in Masan Bay.

For development of microbial additives applicable to in-vessel composting system of food waste, thermophilic bacteria which showed amylase, protease, lipase and cellulase activity were isolated from soil, compost and food waste. Among 81 isolates, the growth characteristic of 20 strains with high enzyme activity were examined. All strains are Gram positive rod with catalase activity and 17 strains are spore formers. At $50^{\circ}C$, most of the strains were able to grow from pH 5 to pH 10 and in presence of 8% of NaCl. In trypticase soy broth, the growth of these strains was greatly increased by aeration, but decreased at elevated temperature above $50^{\circ}C$.

Enterobiasis and head lice infestations, contact-borne parasitic diseases, are the most prevalent parasitic infections of children in Korea, and they are transmitted by close contact with infected persons. They are not of major concern in public health, therefore their importance in children's health care are overlooked in Korea. Egg positive rates of Enterobius vermicularis have been reported to be 10~20% among children in kindergartens and primary schools. Enterobiasis is diagnosed by scotch tape anal swab, but repeated examination is necessary for accurate diagnosis. Albendazole or mebendazole are extremely effective for treatment, however, reinfections usually occur if treatment is not repeated at least three times at a 3-week-interval, targeting the whole family members including the patients. Environmental sanitation and health education are also necessary to guarantee the successful treatment of enterobiasis. Head lice infestation is still an indication of public health status. Children of 3 to 12 years old and their families have infestations more frequently, and girls have more than boys. Diagnosis can be made by identification of live lice or nits on the head. Pediculicides are effective treatment of infestations, however they do not kill nits completely, requiring second treatment. Recently wet combing is preferred as an alternative by parents in England because of possible toxicity of drugs and resistance of lice. It is impossible to completely prevent enterobiasis and/or head lice infestations. Therefore, mass screening and prevention are required, and, in local clinics, a thorough evaluation of the symptoms and past history, and appropriate laboratory tests are necessary.

This study examines the characteristics of agricultural extension in developed countries to provide the direction for the development of Korean agricultural extension system. The study, then, examines the validity for the localization of agricultural extension system. The study undertakes mil surveys of 314 persons in extension offices, administration offices, National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, agricultural school and colleges. The study justifies the localization of extension system in the long run but not in the short run. It finds the localization within next two years as suggested by central government is not appropriate and suggests the localization after the local government has settled down.

In this paper we propose a discrete bit-loading algorithm that maximizes the transmit bit rate using the channel information. to optimize the performance of the very high-speed digital subscriber line(VDSL) system under the constraint of a maximum transmit power for each user. When the power level of crosstalk is high, the power allocation of a user changes the crosstalk experienced by the other users in the same binder. In this case, the performance of DSL modems can be improved by jointly considering the bit and power allocation of all users Simulation results shows that the proposed method improves the performance compared With that of iterative water-filling method.
