최태욱(Choi Tae-Ouk),최두남(Choi Du-Nam) 대한건축학회 2008 대한건축학회 학술발표대회 논문집 - 계획계/구조계 Vol.28 No.1(계획계)
The purpose of this study is to analyze various levels of discourse on Transparency in architecture, and redefine and classify them into three apparent types, which include Visual Transparency (Visual perception of space over demarcation), Ideal Transparency (Analogizing space over opaque demarcation, based on the discourse of Colin Rowe's phenomenal transparency) and Ambiguous Transparency (Vague visual and ideal perception through translucent demarcation). From these three standpoints, Toyo Ito's architectures are thoroughly analyzed to find out how those notions of transparency are respectively represented in his buildings. Each transparency, among three concepts stated above, acts as an important factor to represent another notion of transparency and they also occasionally show up all together simultaneously. Moreover, with the use of different methods of construction and the application of technology on the architecture, manipulated transparency, which is unprecedented and new-type of transparency, has been shown and percepted.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the methods applied to embody interior space in Steven Holl's architecture, especially focusing on cultural and institutional buildings. Steven Holl has realized distinct space by applying very specific and limited concept. He believes that leads to fundamentality in space which is not easily affected by certain style. It is necessary to analyze the physical elements such as walls, ceiling, structure and etc. in order to understand space which is formless sometimes spiritual as well. At the same time it is also considered to study his interest on phenomenal experience in space which he repeatedly stressed on his remarks. In other words, space in Steven Holl's works means a playground that various phenomena are taking place and being recognized. Therefore, analyzing architectural methods in his works is essential study to understand not only its unique space but the dominant philosophy in his architecture.

Church architecture has evolved over two thousands years responding to changing communities, cultures, and local traditions. It means that church design should understand the boundary where the space users are allowed to communicate within the interactive systems between church and city. Through the analysis of diverse ranges of church plans, the characteristics of public spaces are researched by user’s perceptual behavior based on the functional connection between spaces. Therefore, this research will provide planning and design guidelines for spatial composition of public spaces that are significantly engaged with the interplay of the space and environment of modern church buildings.

This thesis focuses on the study of Kengo Kuma’s works on sustainability based on Martin Heidegger’s thinking on architecture. The method of separation has been the way people deal with climate issues, but what is missing here is the study on the relationship between the building, the environment and the people himself. Kuma has always emphasized on the relationship between the place and the building, and on his rethought on the essence of architecture, not in its appearance, but in its existence. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the work of Kengo Kuma on his notion of natural architecture, and through this, rethink the basic ethic of sustainability, from the essence of architecture itself.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the Robert Venture"s architecture according to the Merleau-Ponty"s Phenomenological theory relating the space and the body. In Merleau-Ponty"s book, " Phenomenologie de la perception", claims that the body is the main key that makes the space, architecture, and the world. Based on his book, the five senses of the human experience leads to the variety of sense and perceptual experience of the architectural space. therefore, the study analysis the phenomical point of the view in space of Merleau-Ponty, and seeks the new understanding of the Robert Venturi’s architectural works in relation with the theory.

This dissertation proposes a new metaphoric perspective which has been considered as a matter of producing transcendental logic of contemporary architecture between tangible and intangible metaphoric aspects. The use of metaphoric analysis of contemporary architecture in discourse on meaning-in-genesis precisely crystalizes inherent meanings which involved with ambiguity and polysemy. As a result, this study expects that the metaphoric theory for a new perspective of analyzing contemporary architecture will clearly reveals the ambiguous and paradox meaning in the coming crisis in contemporary society.
