Vol.41 No.4

In many of George MacDonald's fantasies, death is one of the main issues that inspires him. Death is not an end but merely a continuation of life in different physical form and temporal state in his fantasies. In At the Back of the North Wind, Diamond's life in this world has only been a preparation for the another world crossing the door step, which goes on forever and is much better than the one before. MacDonald introduces two types of time passages; limited (lineal) and eternal (luminal) in this fantasy. Limited time trances along a limited axis from point to point, from birth to death. On the other hand, there is eternal time - the time after passing the luminal time of death. MacDonald endeavors to explain the eternal time which governs the outside world. The eternal time world is not the same and cannot be measured or experienced in the same way as the limited time world. It is operated by the luminal time of “good life, the happily ever after.” (Howon University)

Vol.37 No.2

Hawthorne emphasizes the importance of ‘sympathy’, ‘humanity’, and ‘community’ in contrast to the systematic pursuit of perfection that destroys Aylmer and Georgiana of “The Birthmark”. Aylmer desires perfection and wishes to control nature. He believes that he can attain scientific perfection but his actual goal will be the destruction of the nature. Hawthorne warns the readers that scientific perfection will be achieved only through the understanding nature not manipulating it. Hawthorne also emphasizes that the attempt to gain perfection leads a human beings to forget that he is human created by ‘humus’, the earth. That is ‘the profounder wisdom’ in “The Birthmark” of Nathaniel Hawthorne. (Howon University)

Vol.18 No.-

This is a paper on the pragmatic application of the theory of A. Owen Aldridge`s parallel literary criticism to the comparison of Gwon Jeong-saeng and George MacDonald focusing on their main theme of death. The two writers do not share similarities in their cultural and historical background but they present a basis for comparative study in the sense that they have very important commonality in their concern of death. They write for the children and childlike adults and death is the main issue that inspired both of them. The solution to the dilemma for both writers is to be a living sacrifice for others unto death to help that they might obtain eternal life. This idea derives from and points toward two central themes, the fatherhood of God and the men`s salvation through the obedience of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is clear from their writings that our sacrificial death for our neighbor is to be modeled after that of Jesus, who became obedient unto death. In their stories to be dead is to be truly alive. And the dreamlike vision of life presented to the readers through their stories is a reflection of that eternal reality. That is as MacDonald`s favorite quote from Novalis; life is, or should be, a dream of a greater reality.

Vol.33 No.-

J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis shared a friendship of over 40 years that affected not only their literary style but faith as well. Tolkien guided Lewis to convert to Christianity and Lewis encouraged Tolkien to write fantasies. As writers, both men introduced basic Christian themes and principles into their works for their readers. For them it was by means of God``s Natural Law as revealed in nature that even the most ancient of myths contained some traces of the Gospel, although in partial and impersonal form. Without a belief in Natural Law, humans are condemned to live in society governed only by power and self-interest at the expense of civility and novelty. Thus in their fiction, letters and critical writings, Tolkien and Lewis revealed their belief that Natural Law provides an objective standard of morality. Tolkien traced the natural law in the fairy tales, which has the characteristics of the recovery, escape and comfort. Lewis tries to search the commomalities in the Christianity and Tao in old China over era, region and culture. Tolkien and Lewis shared the congenial spirits both in literature and faith.

N/A Objective : To evaluate the usefulness of power spectral analysis on fetal heart rate variability as a new diagnostic method of fetal distress. Study Design : Among 76 pregnant women who underwent computerized electronic fetal monitoring and cord blood gas analysis, we divided them into 3 groups, i.e.; normal fetus group (36), presumed distress group (26) and acidemic distress group (14). In order to perform linear analysis on the raw data of the fetal heart rate, after resampling, we performed Fourier transformation and investigated power distributions among very low frequency (VLF), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) bands, and autonomic balance (LF/HF). Results : The results of the spectral analysis showed that in normal fetus group, the difference in the distribution of power spectrums of VLF, LF and HF was significantly higher than in presumed distress group and acidemic distress group. In fetal distress, the LF and VLF value (0.0023, 0.0437) were good predictors (sensitivity 97.5%, 75.0% and specificity 86.1%, 94.4%). The LF value (0.0013) was a good predictor in fetal acidemia (sensitivity 97.5% and specificity 86.1%). Conclusions : A computerized spectral analysis of fetal heart rate variation is a good predictor of fetal distress, which is made automatically and objectively.

Vol.33 No.-

The aim of this essay is to examine the differences and similarities between J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis using the comparative study of acceptance and affection. They were scholarly friends, fellow Christians and allied writers. They shared the similar vision on the literary and religious matters even though their personalities, and the styles of lectures and writings could hardly have been similar. Their goal of writings was to deliver the Gospel to the readers and lead them to ‘regress’ to the past beyond modernism, searching for ‘The Lost Road.’ Both of them believed that myth and fairy story must contain moral and religious truth, but allusively. They sought to rehabilitate fairy stories and fantasies for adults as well as children.

Vol.28 No.3

This article is a pragmatic application of the theory of parallel literary study of Aldridge in a comparative study of Kang Kyungae and Kate Chopin focusing on their works, Mother and Daughter and The Awakening. These two writers do not have much similarity in their cultural and historical background, but their works provide a basis for comparative study in the sense that they have very important commonalities in dealing with women's reality, agony, anger and the strategy of their survival in male-dominated social structures. In this paper I studied the authors' lives and then explored the process of woman's self-reflection and self-cultivation focusing on the two women characters, Oki of The Mother and The Daughter by Kyungae Kang and Edna of The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Self reflection is a course of searching for a new consciousness and a new self-analysis to answer the question “Who am I?” or “What kind of person do I want to be?”. The novels are similar in patterns of development of protagonists and reflect the desperate and dangerous steps a woman takes as she moves on to gain her self-identity. In searching of new identities, both Oki and Edna experience the steps of dissatisfaction, rebellion, and isolation. And when they arrive at the stage of self-reflection, both decide to start new lives completely different from their old lives. Even though both of them arrive at the same stage of self-reflection, their journeys after this time are not similar. Oki succeeds in her journey of self-cultivation, but Edna doesn't. Oki succeeds in starting a new life because she prepares the inner resources required to construct an independent life. She works hard in the rice fields during the day. At the night school she was cultivating her self-reflection and she uses her painful past and miserable memories of her mothers as a means of healing and renewal. But in case of Edna, even though she has developed a new embryonic identity, this new self is too weak to struggle alone and too helpless to confront the world. Unlike Oki, she was never able to rise through pain and suffering and she does not possess the stamina to endure misfortune in silence. Through their novels, The Mother and The Daughter and The Awakening. both Kyungae Kang and Kate Chopin encourage women who are suffering from anger and scars not to abandon themselves even though reality is tough and cruel, but to gain the inner resources of their own, through self-reflection and self-cultivation. And the course of this self-reflection and self-cultivation is the typical power and trait of ‘Sagim’ of Korean ‘Han’. < Howon University >
