천승미 대한언어학회 2005 언어학 Vol.13 No.2
This paper explores the complexities of constructing the English Loanwords Contents (ELC) database, which is a listing of English loanwords culled from four dictionaries and hundreds of articles in Korean newspapers. The database is examined for its use as an educational tool for English as a Second Language learners in Korea, particularly with respect to vocabulary.

. This study investigates the effects of flipped learning on academic achievement and learning satisfaction in a university English grammar course. A comparative analysis was conducted between a control group using traditional lecture-based instruction and an experimental group engaged in flipped learning. In the flipped learning model, students prepared individually with instructor-provided materials and the AI tool ChatGPT before class, allowing class time to focus on advanced learning activities to deepen their understanding. The study evaluates the feasibility of flipped learning in grammar instruction and examines its empirical impact on students’ performance and satisfaction. Findings aim to highlight the potential benefits of student-centered teaching methods and encourage the integration of flipped learning in future English grammar courses. This research underscores the importance of interactive, learner-focused approaches in enhancing educational outcomes.

This study explores how generative AI, particularly ChatGPT, can enhance English language education, focusing on personalized learning to maximize each learner’s potential. In an English conversation class, students in the experimental group used ChatGPT as a learning tool after the instructor provided preliminary training. The study compared the improvement in speaking skills between the experimental and control groups and observed learners’ attitudes towards ChatGPT. Results indicated that the experimental group showed significantly greater improvement in speaking skills and positive changes in affective attitudes towards learning with ChatGPT. The findings suggest the need for continuous efforts in the application of AI technology to English teaching methods to aid in improving learners' English speaking skills. .

This study aims to investigate a range of lexical errors frequently made by adult Korean learners of English in spoken contexts, as well as to explore effective instructional methods for dealing with lexical error patterns. The data collection process included analyzing a spoken learner corpus established through online conversation sessions among a native English speaking instructor and 21 Korean cyber university students. The spoken learner corpus underwent a thorough review, and then the related error data were analyzed and coded using the Types of Error suggested by Ferris (2002). This corpus-based error analysis was used to facilitate the identification of lexical errors and their patterns that occur most frequently in spoking English, so that English learners could benefit from more accurate and specific information regarding vocabulary use. This study is expected to enable foreign language learners to reduce lexical errors by helping them to perceive their most frequent errors and correct these mistakes through self-directed learning. In addition, an accurate database of lexical errors could help teachers improve the effectiveness of their vocabulary instruction, which would not only increase students’ lexical ability but also help ensure the attainment of the ultimate goal of language education: efficient communication.

This study investigates the use of a discovery learning method using concordances to teach prepositions, which are considered multi-meaning, low-transparency, and high-frequency words. The study presents a specific way to examine the versatility of prepositions that are difficult for learners to understand through context using concordances. In order to use the corpus for education (exploiting corpora to teach), the instructor- selected concordances were provided to the learners to discover the usage and meaning of each preposition. The results indicated that learners made remarkable progress in the use of correct prepositions when using the corpus of the experimental group for each preposition. Exploratory learning using the corpus proved more effective than traditional lecture-based instruction, and the validity of using the concordances was demonstrated, which could encourage the authentic use of language in teaching and learning. .

This study aims to analyze teaching effects through the students" perceptions as identified a student survey by maximizing participation opportunities for situational learning, experience expansion, and problem-solving skills through blended learning. The study identifies ways to reinforce educational materials and provide learner satisfaction by expanding this realistic, participation-based education. Considering the application, possibility, and values of education, this study used Metaverse as a learning platform to provide an environment in which the learners can continuously communicate in English both inside and outside the classroom by taking advantage of e-learning benefits and maintaining both online and offline learning. Metaverse can expand the scope of learning experiences and teaching contents in the online community environment and promotes free interactions at the face-to-face level.

This study examines the educational effectiveness of the corpus and corpus analysis tool by considering the various corpus analysis tools available for the educational utilization of the corpus and selecting appropriate tools for the learning purpose, learning content, and learning target. Using the educational corpus in the EFL environment allows learners to acquire contextualized grammatical knowledge through the real language used by native speakers and helps learners understand how to make sentences. When acquiring the meaning and form of language through corpus-based activities, learners are exposed to repetitive linguistic structures as cognitive subjects rather than passive recipients of knowledge. Such activities can be used as an optimal means of generalizing noticing, enhancing language acquisition, and increasing language uptake. In data-driven learning, learners take the initiative in learning language as researchers who discover and analyze rules by becoming familiar with various patterns of the target language through vast amounts of language data. Psychological processing by noticing language use facilitates the conversion of learning into long-term memory, enabling effective language learning. Learning grammar using data-driven learning has demonstrated excellent learning effects as learners focus on grammar forms and examine their practical uses to gain meaningful language use experience.

The purpose of the study is to look into the possibility of utilizing corpus for teaching phrasal verbs in English grammar education. The research included authentic materials for teaching phrasal verbs in the English grammar class of the University as a basis for demonstrating real life usage through corpus which includes grammatical and linguistic relationship of phrasal verbs. For this, concordance data through the use of AntConc program was used during phrasal verb education. The new method introduced real life examples and sentence structures applicable to the phrasal verb in order to allow the students to realize the usage environment and definition, and do a comparative analysis of the phrasal verb by themselves which ultimately increased the effectiveness of learning phrasal verbs.
