Chae, Yoo-soon. “Salvation in Tennessee Williams’ Plays.” Studies on English Language and Literature. 33.2(2007): 129-146. This paper will review the two heroines’ salvation in Tennessee Williams’ works, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Williams is admired for his ability to create memorable female characters because of his miserable childhood background. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche De Bois, feeling trapped by Southern tradition, resorts to promiscuity to compensate for her guilty conscience following her young and adored husband’s suicide, which she felt responsible for. Unable to face the world of reality by herself because of this tragedy, she pursues protection and salvation even from strangers but is defeated by Stanley who stands for reality. In Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Margret, victimized by her poor environment, has strong will-power and falsely claims she is pregnant to her father-in-law in order to get fortune and his favor. Through these benefits she achieves salvation not for herself but her husband. Blanche is blind to the reality of her situation and victimized, but Margaret realizes her situation and establishes a bright world with her love. In the earlier works, the female heroines are lost before finding salvation. But in the later works, the female heroines fight back to escape from illusion and achieve reality. (Hanseo University)

악성임파종의 병기 (Staging) 결정에 사용된 임파조영술에 대한 고찰

As the lymphography is considered to be a valuable method for direct roentgenographic visualization of retroperitoneal lymphatics and lymph node, this procedure has been used to demonstrate clinically unsuspected involvement of retroperitoneal lymph nodes in malignant lymphoma. To 28 patients who was proved malignant lymphoma histologically by biopsy of peripheral lymphnode from May, 1977 to June, 1978, bipedal lymphography by minor modification of Kinmouth's (1952) intralymphatic technique was performed for detecting lymphomatous involvement of retroperitoneal lymphnode at department of radiology, Presbyterian Medical Center in Jeonju. The results are as follows: 1. Of 23 lymphography in malignant lymphoma, 15 were abnormal and 8 normal. 2. The over all advancement in clinical stage Iand II combined, due to abnormal lymphography, is 53%. This results reveals that in 1 of every 2 cases classed as stage I or II on initial diagnosis, the patient already has occult disease und tectable by physical examination or simple radiographic investigation. 3. In clinical stage III and IV patients, lymphography has been of value in delineating the extent of abdominal disease, but has not influenced the staging. 4. As case report (I) reveals, the follow-up lymphographic study can aid in evaluation of therapeutic effect. 5. Of 28 undertaken lymphography, only 20 cases could be cannulated bilaterally, suggesting some technical difficulty as compared with other radiologic method. 6. Complications of 27 lymphography are dull pain, oozing at cut-down site and the swelling of the foots. Of above complication, dull pain was the most frequent problem.

방사성 핵물질을 이용한 위식도 역류(GE reflux) 검출방법

GE Scintiscanning은 위식도역류(GE reflex)를 검출하기 위한 새로운 방법으로 인습적인 어떤 진단 방법보다도 높은 민감도를 보일 분만 아니라 방법 자체도 매우 간단하면서 생리학적이기 때문에 선열 검사로서 가장 적합한 진단방법이다. GE Scintiscanning의 방법을 기술하고 다른 기존의 진단 방법들과 비교 고찰하였다. GE scintiscanning using milk or saline-Tc-99m sulfur colloid is a convenient, tubeless, and accurate technique for detecting GE reflux and pulmonary aspiration. The ability to monitor patients for prolonged periods of time is a distinct advantage, since reflux occurs intermittently. No maneuvers are employed in an attempt to produce reflux, so the method is physiological. Exposure to radioactivity does not limit the utility of the GE scintiscanning. Therefore, GE scintiscanning appeals well adapted as a screening study and for performing serial studies to evaluate therapeutic response.

대리석골증은 원인불명의 희귀한 유전적 질환으로 방사선학적으로 대칭성 및 양측성으로 전실골격의 경화를 초래하는 매우 특이한 소견을 보이므로 X선소견과 가족적인 발생양상만으로 진단이 가능한 질환이다. 저자는 양성형의 대리석골증을 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고한다. A case of benign Osteopetrosis in a young man is reported with brief review of literatures, which is characterized roentgenographically by marked increase in the radiodensity of bone throughout entire skeleton and by abnormalities in the shapes of the long bones, especially the metaphysis.

Euripides, evaluated as ‘the most tragic of the poets’ by Aristotle, writes with great insight and sympathy on the position and psychology of women and is very interested in creating a complex, dynamic, and multifaceted character. He provokes deep thought not only to his contemporary audiences but also to us today with gender conflict in Medea. Women, the bearers and protectors of male children, are considered to be prone to feelings of insecurity and jealousy and motivated by feelings rather than by reason in a patriarchal society. So they are dominated by men and hidden from history. Euripides deals with this kind of theme in most of his plays. Even though Aristotle introduces a decadent element in Euripides, the admirers and haters of Euripides argue with Euripides’ radical idea over this theme. As a revenge tragedy, Medea relates Jason’s betrayal in spite of Medea’s loyalty toward him. Medea’s tremendous behavior for her husband comes from her love toward him. Jason deceives his wife, Medea, a resolute, devoted wife and mother. She becomes a victim of broken vows by her husband’s remarriage. Jason envisions two sons to become the legitimate heirs to the kingdom of Corinth. But it is an unsuccessful dream of a happy future and his ambition for power. Medea can’t accept his desire because she has fulfilled her part of the marriage contract by giving him two sons. If they are still childless, she may accept his intention, but she deserves some measure of loyalty from Jason. Even Chorus condemns his unjust behavior. But Jason assumes that Medea’s reaction is simply due to sexual jealousy from his wrong idea about women. Finally, she decides to get revenge by killing his new bride by sending poisoned gifts, and tries to get permission from King Creon. She begs Creon to give her one more day before signing a proclamation banishing her from Corinth. The bond between parent and child, and especially mother and child, stands as the most fundamental and unquestionable bond, so it is accepted that infanticide is one of the strongest taboos. She recognizes that the wickedness of her crime that she is about to commit is unpardonable and that her punishment of the man whom she hates requires the destruction of those she loves most and her revenge might be a hollow revenge. She falters, but she resolves to fulfill her plan. Jason's oath-breaking is finally punished. She knows that Jason’s love for sons is for himself, so refuses his wish for the sons’ burial. He pities himself, but we don’t agree with him because we can’t see any justice in him. He fails to recognize nothing of the wrong he did as a failing hero. Even though Medea is described as a dehumanised monster by Jason, she defeats him in the name of justice. Medea is saved by the chariot of Helios, the very vehicle of divine justice.

This paper aims to examine the gender identity and the social mobility through disguise. After being focused on the queer studies in the academy, the criticism on Twelfth Night has been treated in many different ways such as gender problems(i.e, homoerotic love, heterosexual marriages, and bisexuality), and the social mobility to compare with the traditional criticism, which focused on the triangular relationship of Orsino, Viola, and Olivia, and the happy ending of the protagonists’ love affairs. Viola’s cross-dressing provokes Olivia’s homoerotic love, and her girlish face and voice brought Orsino Homoerotic love. Viola’s disguise and Malvolio’s transformation create confusion and pleasure. Malvolio’s false desire and ambition to marry up and dominate over his household are mocked by Sir Toby’s gang. The proclamation of the joint wedding ceremony between Orsino and Viola, and between Olivia and Sebastian will be indefenitly delayed, until the captain provides Viola’s maid’s garments. Everybody expects a happy marriage but Malvorio isolates himself from the joyful and comic festival because of his proclaiming revenge against all of his victimizers. (Hanseo University)
