Vol.63 No.-

Seokjangsa Temple, related to the monk Yangji recorded in 『Samguk Yusa』, is located on the northwest outskirts of the royal capital of Silla. As a result of re-examining the excavation report, Seokjangsa Temple appears to have a temple space from the Unified Silla period and a temple space from the Goryeo~Joseon period located to the north and south, respectively, and was moved to its current location during the Goryeo period. In the Unified Silla period, steps and stone rows are confirmed, but the location or size of the pagoda cannot be confirmed. During the Goryeo Dynasty, stonework, staircases, Geumdangji and yard were investigated, and there was a stone pagoda that replaced the brick pagoda. During the Joseon Dynasty, the previous space was repaired and used, and the site of several buildings, including Geumdang, was identified, and the entrance door was presumed to be in the form of a pavilion. As a result of analyzing the relics excavated from the Seokjangsi site, it is possible that the temple was founded in the late 7th century, but the central period is judged to be after the 8th century. After being closed down during the Goryeo Dynasty, it remained in operation until the early Joseon Dynasty, and it is confirmed that ancestral rites were held with the support of government offices. As a result of examining the details of Wangmangsa Temple and Geumjangdae located around Seokjangsa Temple Site, it is presumed that these temples existed at the same time as Seokjangsa Temple. In particular, there is a possibility that Wangmangsa Temple was annotated by monk Hyetong, who appears in 『Samguk Yusa』. The existence of these temples tells us that during the Unified Silla period, as temple construction expanded from the center of the Silla royal capital to the outskirts, the number of temples attended by high priests increased.

Vol.7 No.-

The Bomun-dons tumuli(普門洞古墳群) are ancient tombs located at a stronghold that is connected to the Myeonghual Castle(明活城), being presumed to have been built as a collective boundary of graves for the newly rising aristocracies than as tumuli merely built by the expansion of a graveyard, In particular, a reference to the results of excavated investigation that has been accomplished little by little since the rule of Japanese imperialism shows the phase that the ancestrial rites before the grave changed from wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds to stone chambers with horizontal entrance (stone chamber with tunnel entrance), with the phenomenon that wooden chamber tombs with stone mound coexisted with stone chambers with tunnel entrance (or with horizontal entrance). Such a phase as the main ancestral rites for the grave change in one bounds of grave explicitly manifests changes in boundaries of graves, as has been the case with the main tumuli in Gyeongju, including Hwangnam-dong tumuli (Hwangnam-dong No. 151 tumulus, Noseo-dong tumuli (Noseo-dong No. 133 tumulus, Noseo-dong No. 137 tumulus, Noseo-dong Stone Chamber (1929), etc. Therefore when we assume that the Bomun-dong, tumuli would indicate the presence of e royal mausoleum of King Jinpyeong(眞平王陵) located in the middle of Bomun Field, the presence of the royal mausoleum of Queen Sundeok, or the presence of Seoak-dong tumuli which have similar locational conditions, they are very likely to be such tumuli as built by newly rising aristocracies related to them. Moreover, Seoak-dona tumuli that began to be built around Seoak-dong at this time may be presumed to indicate the presence of the royal mausoleum of King Muyeol (武烈王陵), thus being assumed to be their boundary of graves. Such a phase may be also presumed to be the same as that of the Bomun-dong tumuli. The period around the sixth century in the history of Silla might be considered to be an age when ancient tombs were differentiated from a single boundary of graves to multiple boundaries of graves in the process of using a single boundary of graves by kings and their aristocracies and by building new boundaries of graves centering around their strongholds.

Vol.5 No.-

In Korea, tiles were used from as early as the Three Kingdoms period as verified by the fact that a large amount of tides have been unearthed from sites located all over the country. Tiles which were stamped or incised with the character 'Gwan(官)' are well known. Gwan(官) seems to indicate an administrative or a public office, suggesting that the tiles may have been used on such kinds of buildings. This article aims to analyse the use of these tiles by examining the sites where they were excavated. The 28 sites encompass fortress sites, ancient building sites and temple sites, all of which date from the Unified Silla to the early Goryeo period. The results of the analysis are as follows: The character 'gwan(官)' indicated a public office and was used on storage buildings connected to a public office. It was used with the character 'jeong(井)' meaning 'well' for the purpose of warding off evil spirits such as fire. Tiles with the character 'daegwan(大官)' were used with the character 'gyeong(?)' to indicate a storage building. In the same way, tiles with the character 'gwan(官)' may have been used at offices managing a storage. There are tiles bearing the name of a temple, such as 'daegwansa(大官寺)' or 'gwansa(官寺)'. Tiles with the character 'gwan(官)' used with the name of a place indicate that a place was called as various names gwan(官), seong(城) and gun(郡). Characters on tiles suggest that powerful local clans reflected their identity in the tiles. The large ancient building site where tiles with the character 'gwan(官)', 'gwancho(官草)' and 'hwan(宦) were excavated seems to have been the house of a powerful local clan.

Vol.11 No.-

“Hanhongyeop” is the printed version of lectures given to the general public by three people: Sekino Tadashi, Yaiichi Seiichi, and Kuriyama Shunichi on what they felt during the survey of historical remains of Korea. This book contains 3 pieces of writings that show the thoughts of Japanese researchers about Korean cultural assets. Sekino Tadashi attempted to divide Korean art history into different periods through “Hanhongyeop”. He saw Korean culture as the culture dominated by heteronomy rather than as a dynamic culture and saw the lack of unique Korean culture as the symbol of decaying civilization. Japanese researchers ultimately attempted to perpetuate the colonial view of history upon Korean people based on imperialism through this book. Sekino Tadashi divided the history of Korean culture into prehistorical era and historial era and examined the influence of various dynasties of China in each period. He found Korean and Japanese cultures through the exchange with China, and this indicates the view of the researchers that studied East Asian culture then. Eventually, Sekino Tadashi’s idea that appears in “Hanhongyeop” finds homogeneity by associating the origin of ancient Korean culture with Japan rather than China and this is the reason he emphasized the art of the Unified Silla Dynasty as the golden age in the Korean art history.

Vol.52 No.-

A variety of studios existed and operated inside Silla’s royal capital which is one of ancient capitals of Korea. Most workshop & studios located inside Wolseong, the central district of the capital, and the government office areas around it are estimated to be textile studios, and this implies that studios belonging to the palace and government offices, the main consumers of the products at the time, kept close distance from their consumers. Workshop & studios that were located in the outskirts of the capital, the royal capital of Silla, were iron, charcoal, earthenware, and roof tile studios that were operated on a large scale. Workshop & studios established there premises on the nodes with traffic convenience when the capital city was being formed and some of them moved close to where the raw materials of their products were when the capital expanded gradually. For most Workshop & studios were located in the outskirts of the capital, they were not influenced by the extended implementation of the grid system inside the capital and preferred the area with convenient transportation where they could access raw materials from surroundings. Regarding the size of the Workshop & studio, it is deemed that studios gradually produced a great variety of products as they grew from into large studios.

Vol.- No.17

The building site with a number of buried large jars examined at the site located in Seonggeon-dong, Gyeongju is estimated to be a storage of liquid goods and rice. It is a <Jar Burying Building>, which mounded soil to a consistent height inside the building and buried large jars. Large jars, half buried in the mounded layer of the building, were replaced once broken, and earthen lids were placed on the jars to store and manage the stored items. The Ladles excavated from the site were made of bronze, wood, or shell, and ladles of different material were used as necessary to make sure the stored material is not deteriorated. The charcoal found inside the jars suggests the possibility that fine charcoal could be used to prepare sauces from the Three States Period. The contents of epigraph and wooden tablet from the period indicate that the storage was inside a temple and crops such as barley were managed while uniformly divided by 60 sacks (石). In this respect, the storage at the site located in Seonggeon-dong, Gyeongju is presumed to be the storage facility related with Samnangsa Temple and shows the image of the storage inside the temple at the time.
