This study aims to show how sexuality in a queer story can and should be translated in a different language. For this purpose, two Korean translations of Brokeback Mountain, a short story by American author Annie Proulx, are compared in detail, with an emphasis on sex-related language. The two translations, published in 2006 and 2017, respectively, are analyzed in four categories: (1) euphemistic language related to sex, (2) phrases eliciting sexuality-related imagery, (3) the representation of sexuality strengthened by “addition” (as a translation method), and (4) sexuality and/in syntax. The analysis shows that in the 2017 translation the subtle and nuanced meanings of sexuality are expressed in a fairly oblique way; however, in the 2006 translation, such sexuality is reconstructed in a very direct and explicit manner. This article concludes with a brief summary of the findings and discussion of sexuality in queer translation. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Republic of Korea)

This study aims to provide a general understanding of how undergraduate students perceive various facets of ChatGPT and its use as a translation tool. For this purpose, empirical data were collected in two stages in May 2023 at a university in Seoul. In the first stage, students from an English-Korean translation department completed a questionnaire on their perceptions of ChatGPT, their user experience, and ethical challenges associated with AI tools. In the second stage, 49 students from two intact classes (course title: Computer-Aided Translation) translated a short op-ed article into English using ChatGPT (ver. 3.5) as both a translation and post-editing tool. Following this task, they wrote reflective commentaries on their on-task behavior and post-editing procedures. This study reveals various findings, including students’ frequent use of simple prompts and their negative perceptions of translations generated by ChatGPT.

The concept of the fictional turn that was put forward in the 1990s is one of the many turns in translation studies and has inspired robust research in languages and cultures. Based on the fictional turn, this study investigates the community interpreter as a protagonist in Interpreter of Maladies (1999) and two translations. For this purpose, this study attempts to examine the feasibility of sentiment analysis as a research method to show how fictional depictions of the community interpreter are portrayed. Sentiment analysis is used for identifying sentiments embedded in text data. This paper conducted a sentiment analysis concerning the degrees of neutral, negative, and positive sentiments implied in the usage of the lexicon in each text. Findings show that sentiment scores between ST and TT demonstrate considerable variability. A comparative analysis between TT1 and TT2 also reveals that the fictional interpreter is not detached from socio-cultural contexts. Based on these outcomes, this study suggests the practical implications of sentiment analysis as a research method in translation studies. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Korea)

As a case study, this paper presents an investigation on gender bias in neural machine translation with Naver Papago and Google Translate. In spite of the remarkable progress in machine translation system, there are remaining challenging tasks, especially the gender bias in machine translation and processing itself. This kind of phenomenon threatens the fairness of a translation system and runs the risk of amplifying biases in machine translation. Under the circumstances, this study examines gender bias in neural machine translation system with Google Translate and Naver Papago. As for the gender bias evaluation in two machine translation, this paper makes English-Korean and Korean-English language sets using a lexicon set of adjectives. Also, this study purposes to compare Naver Papago and Google Translate. Upon the qualitative examination, the findings revealed that Naver Papago and Google Translate are significantly prone to gender-biased translation and biased results against women are much more frequent. Also, Naver Papagoseems to be more abusive against women. On the other hand, Google Translate seems to be more balanced than Naver Papago, using gender-neutral vocabulary and structure. Moreover, Naver papago and Google Translate exhibit a tendency toward male defaults typically associated with unbalanced gender distribution or stereotypes.

The purpose of this study is to provide deeper understanding of how it is possible for people to understand PC communication language they have never seen or heard before without any problem. In order to answer this question, we focused on the vowel variation through which new variants are created (for PC communication), and hypothesized that there is a phonetic constraint which requires the vowel of the variant to be phonetically similar (to the maximum) to the vowel of the original word. Through the corpus analysis of the dictionary of PC communication language, we show that our hypothesis is justified by the fact that most of the variants we collected from the dictionary, that is, 90% of them, conformed to the phonetic constraint we postulated.
On the nature of CNPC effects in Korean scrambling constructions
김일규,지윤주 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2023 언어연구 Vol.40 No.2
There are two main approaches to the nature of island effects: syntactic and functional approaches. The former attributes the nature of island effects to the violation of syntactic constraints, whereas the latter claims that island effects arise due to non-syntactic factors such as processing difficulty and semantic/pragmatic infelicity. This paper aims to investigate the nature of Complex NP Constraint (CNPC) effects in Korean scrambling constructions based on two acceptability judgment experiments. The first experiment examines the role of three functional factors, namely plausibility, definiteness, and coherence, which have been claimed to have significant effects on island phenomena by previous studies. The second experiment, which is based on a factorial definition of island effects, tries to figure out whether functionally felicitous CNPC-violating scrambling constructions show island effects. The results of the two experiments strongly support the view that the nature of CNPC effects in Korean scrambling constructions is functional, not syntactic.
