Background: The pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) includes inflammation, oxidative stress, an imbalance of proteases and antiproteases and apoptosis which has been focused on lately. Abnormal apoptotic events have been demonstrated in both epithelial and endothelial cells, as well as in inflammatory cells including neutrophils and lymphocytes in the lungs of COPD patients. An increased propensity of activated T lymphocytes to undergo apoptosis has been observed in the peripheral blood of COPD patients. Therefore, the apoptosis of T lymphocytes without activating them was investigated in this study. Methods: Twelve control subjects, 21 stable COPD patients and 15 exacerbated COPD patients were recruited in the study. The T lymphocytes were isolated from the peripheral blood using magnetically activated cell sorting. Apoptosis of the T lymphocytes was assessed with flow cytometry using Annexin V and 7-aminoactinomycin D. Apoptosis of T lymphocytes at 24 hours after the cell culture was measured so that the T lymphocyte apoptosis among the control and the COPD patients could be compared. Results: Stable COPD patients had increased rates of CD4+ T lymphocyte apoptosis at 24 hours after the cell culture, more than the CD4+ T lymphocyte apoptosis which appeared in the control group, while the COPD patients with acute exacerbation had an amplified response of CD4+ T lymphocyte apoptosis as well as of CD8+ T lymphocyte apoptosis at 24 hours after the cell culture. Conclusion: Stable COPD patients have more apoptosis of CD4+ T lymphocytes, which can be associated with the pathophysiology of COPD in stable conditions.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) is a rare disorder characterized by a nonneoplastic proliferation of distinctive histiocyte cells within lymph node sinuses and lymphatics in extranodal sites. SHML occurs worldwide and is primarily a disease of childhood and early adulthood. A 26-yr-old man presented with painless palpable lymph node in cervical area. Radiographic studies revealed pleural effusion with lymphadenopathy and calcification in mediastinum. The cervical lymph node biopsy showed dilated sinuses filled with histiocytes with clear cytoplasm. The cells stained positive with CD68 and S-100. These cytologic and immunohistochemical findings were considered consistent with the diagnosis of SHML.

Wang Fu-Chin is a philosopher who had lived from the end of the Ming Dynasty through the early Ching Dynasty. His political ideas can be summarized as follows : First, rulers should be generous to their people, but stern toward their government officials. Second, rulers should not be given absolute power. Third, rulers should govern their people not only by the law, but also by benevolence. He also claimed that political systems did not have to be kept intact. Rather, they need to be changed based on the times, regions, and national characteristics. There are some factors which seem to have influenced Wang's political ideas. One is his family background: He was not from a well-known and powerful family. He was a poor scholar, instead, so he did not belong to the privileged classes. The other factor might be the political, social, and economical situation of the late Ming Dynasty and the early Ching Dynasty. People had a hard time during that period of time, so they must have longed for some changes in terms of political, social, and economical systems. As a result, Wang's ideas which were quite different from the prevailing Confucianism got the support of people of that time.

Since the reign of Deng Xiao Ping, various changes in China have provided negative insights into Chiness government as well as positive insights. One of the negative insights is the conflict between the central government and the local government as China may follow the old Soviet Union if this can not be solved through appropriate measures. This phenomenon in the recent contemporary history of China became extremely clear in the declining years of the Ching Dynasty. This paper is focused on investigating the wise historical solution to settle the conflict between the central government and the local government from various angles by analysing the tendencies of the local self-government before the Xin-hai Geming (Revolution of 1911). The first step of the local self-government was the systematic reorganization during the end of 19th century and the early 20th century. The second was the conflict which occurred between the central government and the local government over the right to build the railroad. The third was the development of local economy backed by its activation. The fourth was the local-centered activity which existed in the circle of the anti-Ching revolutionary forces. All of this became clear with the process of concluding the Dongnan hubao(東南互保) Treaty, and the latter period of recent Chinese history as Communism developed-since the collapse of Ching Dynasty-could be seen as further proof of these complicated factors.
