Vol.34 No.-
The purpose of this essay is to review JOONKON Kim’s ‘national evangelization’ as ‘theology of reunification’. From 1962 to his death in 2009,Joonkon Kim, through Korea CCC, pursued a ‘national evangelization’, which was his ‘theology of reunification’. Losing both his father and wife to the communist party should have turned him staunchly anti-communist, but he transformed this negative event into a passionate pursuit of reunification through love. This essay pursues the theory and exercise of ‘the reunification of love’ he advocated, which can be most aptly characterized as a ‘public theology’. Joonkon Kim’s ‘national evangelization’ as thelogy of reuinification can provide guidance to today’s Korean Church as it ponders its position within the discourse of reunification.
Vol.32 No.-
The aim of this essay is to avoid the past streams of theology, focusing rather on the interpersonal relationship and dispute between Whitefield and Wesley. Wesley and Whitefield’s differing views of predestination has already acquired much attention. Nonetheless, each scholars’ disposition has led each to choose one over the other. This was inevitable as the focal point of their dispute was doctrine. However, I want to begin my essay not on doctrine, but how reconciliation was possible in the midst of these differences. I want to suggest that the process of reconciliation came to fruition as both men centered their attention on unity rather than dissention. Even in the midst of their differences in church history, they chose to stand side by side in their systematic theology. Therefore, an imperative question remains for the church: “how were Whitefield and Wesley, who were unable to meet for 25 years, understand and forgive one another, even allowing Wesley to deliver the beautiful end at Whitefield’s funeral?”
