        영조초년(英祖初年)의 전주읍성(全州邑城) 개축공사(改築工事)에 관한 재고찰(再考察)

        Through reinvestigations of early years of King Young-Joe provincial castles, Jeonju Eupsung, this study seeks to broaden the understanding of castle construction of the later period of Chosun Dynasty. Jeonju Eupsung was established by reform-minded king and his loyalist Cho, Hyun Myung. Their new conceptual framework for reconstruction of Jeonju Eupsung was affected by Yoo, Hyung Won, a realist scholar of 17th century. It is obvious that adopted new administrative systems of financing, building and maintaining of Jeonju Eupsung were based on the his theories of castle. This study demonstrates that Jeonju Eupsung built by Cho, Hyun Myung, during the early years of King Young-Joe were based on those new concepts and systems of the new age. The study shows that the designer of this castle had in mind efficient construction design and execution and effective defense of provincial towns located on flat ground. And, the study explains how those original designer sought higher productivity through greater localization of securing resources and more detailed and improved organization of construction responsibilities. In short, this study seeks to prove that the provincial castles of the early 18th century reflected the new thinking on practicality that was spreading throughout the society of Chosun Dynasty at the time.

        『紀效新書』도입 직후의 새로운 城制 모색

        In the early phases of the Japanese invasion(1592), the Chosun military had no successful countermeasures against the enemy forces armed with muskets. The most important cause of defeat was castles of Chosun had no efficient defensive facilities. Thosedays a military tactical manual showed from the allied army camp of Ming China. Name of the book was 《Jixiao-Xinshu(紀效新書)》 written by Oi, Ji-Guang(戚繼光), a commander of southern forces of Ming Dynasty. This book was greatly welcomed fromChosun's government, be known as effective ways to defeat the Japanese pirate raiders. The objective of this study is to investigate the value of 《Jixiao-Xinshu》 that had influenced development of castle construction of the later Chosun dynasty. This system of castle was introduced in a war. In the early days of after introduction, castle constructions were performed under the Chinese supervision of military officials. After the war, some of northwest province castles against northen nomads, had been build according to new systems. 《Jixiao-Xinshu(紀效新書)》 also affected the theories of castle by the prime Minister Ryu, Sung Ryong(柳成龍) and his ideas on the systems of castle were believed to play an important role to develop Korean castles. In conclusion, the study has shown a situation of after introduction 《Jixiao-Xinshu》, more study is necessary to know about construction conditions and methods in the late period of Chosun Dynasty.

        英祖初年 全州와 大邱邑城 築造工事 硏究 : 새로운 城制 및 공사방식을 중심으로 Especially on the new systems and the constructional methods of castle

        Through investigations of early 18th century southern provincial castles, Jeonju and Daegu Eupsung, this study seeks to broaden the understanding of castle construction of the later period of Korea's Yi Dynasty. The Japanese invasion of 1592 raised the awareness of the importance of national defense infrastructure. In this process, Eupsung, provincial castles, came to occupy special importance, and many of them were repaired, redesigned or even entirely rebuilt. Based on new conceptual framework, reform-minded kings and their associates led these efforts of national defense system building. As result, new administrative systems of financing, building and maintaining the provincial castles were established. This study demonstrates that Jeonju and Daegu Eupsung, the provincial castles built during the early years of King Young-Joe were based on those new concepts and systems of the new age. The study shows that the designers of these castles had in mind efficient construction design and execution and effective defense of provincial towns located on flat ground. And, the study explains how those original designers sought higher productivity through greater localization of securing resources and more detailed and improved organization of construction responsibilities.         1731년의 東萊邑城 修築工事에 관한 硏究

        The objective of this study is to investigate the architectural value of Dongrae Eupsung(a province castle) that had been built in 1731, especially the systems of castle, construction process, organizations and situation of labor mobilization in the early 18th century After suffering from the Japanese invasion(1592), the importance of having defensive facilities at the castle had been raised As the result, some of province castles including Dongrae had been built according to the new concepts of defense The organization of construction was under the supervision of military officials and local authorities The construction was accomplished with mobilization of compulsory labor, farmers and laboured monks, and some casual laborers Although the number of casual laborers was not many, it is important that they had participated in local construction by government The group of monks was believed to play an Important role in the project as professional builder controlled by their own system In conclusion, the study has shown a provincial situation of construction in 18th century, more study is necessary to know about construction conditions and methods in the late period of Chosun dynasty
