This article aimed to elucidate the meaning of portrayal and spatial perception of ship and train tourism in Syeoyugyeonmullok and Haeyuga by comparing with previous Travel Gasa. The emphasis of the research was particularly on analyzing these three elements in more concrete terms: the experience of new modes of transportation, techniques for portraying spatial concepts within narratives, and shifts in spatial awareness. Both works are Travel Gasa created in the early 20th century, following journeys around the world with a focus on Anglo-American culture. This period marked the earnest utilization of steamships and steam trains in Joseon, both domestically and internationally. Steamships and steam trains are featured in both Syeoyugyeonmullok and Haeyuga introducing world travel as a new theme in travel narratives. Not only the theme but also the depiction of space has undergone a transformation. The narrative unfolds at a rapid pace in line with the speed of steamboats and steam trains. Consequently, there have also been changes in the perception of space, both in the natural environment and with a focus on China as a central point. These shifts in spatial perception in both works are closely intertwined with the changes in spatial technological methods and the emergence of unprecedented fast means of transportation like ships and trains. The alterations in reality, literature, and thought are interconnected rather than distant from each other.

This article compares the narrative of women’s growth presented by Lim Myung-hee in “Toji” and Hester Prynne in “The Scarlet Letter” to analyze the process of female figures finding independent female images against the backdrop of modernization in Korea and the U.S. The two women both lived in an unhappy marriages in a modernized patriarchal society. And because two women are placed at the center of a triangular relationship with male characters, they are branded as a “enchantress” by people around it. The stigma is in the works, and Lim Myung-hee is depicted as a “stuffed crane” and Hester as a “scarlet letter” which symbolizes the contradictory and absurd nature of patriarchal society. Suffering from social stigma and guilt, the two characters reflect on the absurdity of a patriarchal society and their circumstances. In the process of overcoming this patriarchal dogma, the two characters seek to break away from the male-centered power symbolized by their ex-husband’s violence and to pursue an independent woman’s life, which means vitality life. In the case of Lim Myung-hee, life with vitality is a life that shows “the ability to create,” and in the case of Hester Prynne, a life that can develop “the healthy emotions of women.” The independent women’s lives pursued by the two characters are aimed at solidarity with others in common. Although the specific times and places of life are different, Lim Myung-hee and Hester Prynne can be read as a narrative of women’s growth during the modernization period in that they overcame the stigma imposed on women by patriarchal society and chose to live in solidarity with others.
