Vol.11 No.-

      • Go Down, Moses

Vol.3 No.-

The Sound and the Fury에서 그가 처음으로 성공적으로 사용한 기교상의 혁신이 아닌가 생각한다. The Sound and the Fury에서의 여러 narrator 대신에 두개의 다른 배경 즉 'plantation'과 'wilderness'를 병행시키고 있다.

      • The Prelude

Vol.17 No.-

Prelude is a long poem like an epic and autobiographical. In the 20th century time began to play an important role in novels of James Joyce and Proust. Prelude began to attract the attentions of literary men. Wordsworth's recollection is a kind of stream of consciousness. Nature is very important in his poems, especially in Prelude. To understand this epic-like long poem, we must know the relationship between the poet and nature. Wordsworth loves nature itself literally and he obtains the power to live in the noisy world from nature. And he thinks also that nature is a kind of revelation of life's deep meaning and God's intention. He uses many natural things to understand what is hidden in life and the depth of it. They are wind and water, islands, cavern and mountains. They are used as setting to provoke the mood in which he is prepared to thke part. The images of wind and water are used to manifest power and vitality in the universe. Often when the situation is not fit for wind and water to apper as part of the surrounding scene, their symbolic value is made use of on the figurative level. The image of island is isolation as it is really surrounded by water geographically. It the poet wants to concentrate on deeper meaning or thought, he cut himself off from the outer world using the image of island. This traditional use of insolation by using the image of island goes back to Rousseau. And Rousseau borrows this method from Robinson Crusoe by defoe. There is another image. Though it is less articulated, the poet records intimations of the inner world by means of it. When we encounter such words as Under-thirst, Under-presence, Under-soul, the kind of image appear. We might call it the image of cavern. This image has two functions. One is inevitable and fearful isolation from any external medium without which the mind cannot kept healthy. The other has the opposite function. It is suggestive of fertility and creation. Like all of Wordsworth's central images, the cavern can stand potentially for several things, even apparent opposites.

      • Adonais

Vol.10 No.-

Shelley and Keats, brought together by Leigh Hunt, failed to become friends. Keats did not take to Shelley as kindly as Shelley did to him. They saw enough of one another in the spring of 1817. But their relationship was not that of Milton and King or that of Tennyson and Hallam. Shelley left England for last time 1818 and the poet did not meet again. Keats died in 1821. The poet and the man are two different matters. Though they exist together, they may be unconscious of each other and incapable of deciding on each other's powers and efforts by any reflex act. We may apply this to the subject of "Adonais." It is a the formalized lament of Shelley the poet for Keats the poet. It has rather less to do with the very real but remote grief that Shelley felt for Keats as a man. The poet's concern is with the fate of poets in a world that resists their prophecies and a nature that seems indifferent to their destruction. Shelley's from is the pastoral elegy modeled on Bion's "Lament for Adonis", "Moschus", "Lament for Bion", and Hellenic poems of the second century B.C. Spenser's lament for Sir Philip Sidney, Astrophel and Milton's for Edward Kind influenced Shelley in composing "Adonais."

Vol.5 No.2

Romanticism started and wonderfully bloomed in 19th century in literature, painting and music. It has common characteristics in that they dealt with nature and was reaction from classicism or neo-classicism. Romanticism was made free from strict forms and rational constraints. It had free expressions of feelings of happiness, anger, sorrow and grief. "Spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" is good poetry according to Wordswrorth. Lyrical Ballads is manifesto of romanticism in literature "Tintern Abbey" and other simple poems in the book are good examples which expressed his love of nature and his romantic attitude. Love of nature is rooted in Rousseau's words. "Return to Nature" Love of nature in romanticism led many painters to the landscape of country from the shadowy studio. They wandered to find out wonderful landscapes, objects which they wanted to paint. Economically they could be independent because new-born middle class paid their attention to the pictures of landscape. Turner, well-known Eng1ish landscape-painter and contemporary of Wordsworth, left many wonderful works. He had much influence on the painters in eluding French Impressionists, though they did not want to accept the fact. In French art, Gericault and Delacroix exhibited their romantic Pictures in the saloon. Their works were mucho different those of David who was the leader of nee-classicism in French art. Their themes, materials and the way of expression are different from those of neo-classicist. To see is to believe. Beethoven was the bridge which connected romanticism and classicism. His "Sympony No. 3”. “Eroica” was the start of romanticism in music. He expressed his love of nature in “No. 6 Symphony”. Its title "Pastoral" shows his attitude to nature. In his last symphony. "Choral Symphony". Beethoven arrived at the completion of romanticism in music not only in structure but also by using Schilier's "Ode an Freude" in chorous. Romanticism. I believe, most beautifully bloomed in music and it always revives again as long as we live and have heart to feel and have dream and experiment of and adventurous mind.

      • The Waste Land

Vol.2 No.1

AbstractA poem is a flower cultivated in the spiritual or intellectual garden of a poet. It is necessary to know a poet's life if we understand his poetry fully. His poems have been influenced not only by his own literary experience but also the intellectual background of his time. The first part of 20th century was the age of new beginning in every field, especially in literature. The result of this new movement is the birth of Modernism in literature. One of the reasons why Eliot's poems are difficult is his new style of writing poetry and his awful knowledge of classics. He often expresses his ideas and feelings indirectly but objectively in The Waste Land by the passages of other literary men.The themes of The Waste Land are spiritual dryness, the kind of human existence in which no generating belief gives significance and value to men's daily activities, sex brings no fruitfulness, and death heralds no resurrection. As Eliot himself explains in his notes, the title, the composition and a great deal of syInbol isnl of the poem were suggested by Jessie Weston's From Ritual to Romance. Eliot, following Miss Weston, uses a great variety of mythological and religous material, both occidental and orientaly in order to paint a symbolic picture of the modern Waste Land and the need for regeneration. Ancient vegetation myths and fertility ceremonies of Adonos Attis, Osiris of Sir James. Frazer's Golden Bough were also used in the poem.THe origin manuscript shows us that the poem as published awe a great deal to the severe prunning of Ezra Pound. And Pound not only recognized Eliot's literary genius and recommended him in Ellglish literary society but. also gave literary advices and helped him spiritually and economically. We can say that Pound built the foundation of modernism in literature after T. E. Hulme and Eliota has developed and made it flourish. The structure of The Waste Land is a puzzle to readers who are familiar with poems wi th continuous narrative. The poem is composed of the disconnected images and passages. It is a completely new kind of poem. If w'e approach the poem with a weapon of montage, the puzzle is easily solved. The method cal led montage was developed in the modern film. Literatur and film were influenced each other at the beginning of 20th century. The idea was hinted frrm chinese letters, ideogram. The point is that the combination of two hieroglyphics of the simplest series is to be regarded not as their sum, but as their product, that is, as a value of another dimension. Each separately corresponds to a concept. The undepictable idea or concept is depicted by the combination.THe varieties of montage take basic and somtimes over-lapping forms. They are the oxymoron, dynamic unresolution, parallel plotting, rapid shifts in time and space and multiple narration. Though I could Eliot used not find out wether Eliot used montage technique consciously or not when he wrote the poem. I think Pound has the method in mind when he cut off much of the poem and recomposed it.
