Purpose: To report a case of serous macular detachment associated with tractional fibrous tissue in an optic pit patient successfully treated by vitrectomy without laser photocoagulation. Case summary: A 15-year-old female visited our hospital for visual disturbance of her left eye. The patient’s best-corrected visual acuity was 0.5. After ophthalmic examinations, the patient was diagnosed with an optic pit associated serous macular detachment. Pars plana vitrectomy with complete posterior vitreous detachment was performed. A thick fibrous tissue within the optic disc cupping was found. During removal of the fibrous tissue, the tissue was observed to be attached to a tiny hole above the optic pit. The thick fibrous tissue was tugging at the margin of the hole and was removed using intraocular forceps to relieve the traction. Fluid-gas exchange was then performed and the operation was completed without laser photocoagulation around the optic disc. The fovea was reattached completely in 12 months and visual acuity was improved to 0.8. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2012;53(4):592-596
Zebrafish 동물모델에서 human HtrA2의 expression system 정립에 관한 연구

HtrA2/Omi, a mitochondrial trypsin-like serine protease, is pivotal in regulating apoptotic cell death. Several lines of recent evidence suggest that HtrA2 is associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders; however, the physiological function of HtrA2 still remains elusive. For studying physiological function of HtrA2 in depth, it is necessary to develop a suitable expression system in the model animal. We therefore utilized the zebrafish as a model animal to establish expression of human HtrA2 (hHtrA2) in vivo. For expression of mature HtrA2 as GFP fusion in zebrafish embryos, the HtrA2 (WT) or (S306A) cDNAs with the C-terminal GFP tag were inserted into the pCS2+ plasmid. Expression patterns of HtrA2 in HEK293 cells were first monitored by immunofluorescence staining and immunoblot assays, showing approximately 64 kDa of the HtrA2-GFP fusion proteins. Subsequently, the hHtrA2 plasmid DNA or in vitro transcribed mRNA was microinjected into zebrafish embryos. The expression patterns of HtrA2 in Zebrafish embryos were monitored by GFP fluorescence in 24 hours-post-fertilization (hpf). Although expression patterns of HtrA2-GFP in developing embryos were different between the injected DNA and mRNA, both nucleic acids revealed good expression levels to further study the physiological role of HtrA2 in vivo. This study provides a suitable condition for expressing hHtrA2 in the zebrafish embryos as well as a method for generating useful system to investigate physiological properties of the specific human genes.

Low frequency (400 kHz) Ferrite ICP has been proposed for large area processing. Because the coupling coefficient is close to 1, the transformer matching can be adapted to Ferrite ICP. The transformer matching system is simple. In this paper the new matching system by controlling the turns of transformer using relays is proposed for impedance matching. We developed a simple matching system and characterized it when the turns were changed. It was observed that the 2-channel relay is available for transformer matching.

Some Chronic HBV Carriers have persistent HBV replication despite the presence of anti-HBe Ag antibodies. This atypical chronic HBV infection has recently been related to the presence, in the pre-core region of HBV genome, of a translational stop codon that prevents HBeAg synthesis. We analyzed nucleotide sequences of the pre-core region of HBV isolated from the serum of an anti-HBe, HBV DNA positive severe chronic active hepatitis patient. Nucleotide sequence revealed that there was a point mutation from G to A at nucleotide 1896 of the pre-core region, converting tryptophan (TGG) to a stop codon (TAG). Additional mutation of A-T substitution at position 1846 was found. In conclusion, mutant HBV is responsible for developing severe anti-HBe positive chronic hepatitis B in Korea.
대퇴골 원위부 골절에서 잠김 압박 금속판을 이용한 최소 침습적 금속판 고정술

Purpose: To analyze the clinical and radiologic results of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) for distal femur fractures using a locking compression plate (LCP) and to evaluate its usefulness. Materials and Methods: From May 2006 to April 2011, 23 patients (24 cases) with distal femur fracture were treated by MIPO with a LCP and followed-up for at least 12 months. Mean age was 61.6 years (35-80 years). Union time and post operative alignment were measured on radiograph, and clinical function was evaluated by range of motion (ROM), Knee Society Score and complications. Results: In 22 patients (23 cases) except for 1 case, bony union was obtained after an average of 18 weeks (12 26 weeks). The mean ROM was 124 degrees (80-135 degrees). According to the Knee Society Score, there were 12 excellent, 8 good, 1 fair and 2 poor results and the mean score was 87.5 (60-98). Postoperative complications were nonunion in 1 case, ankylosis in 1 case, malunion in 2 cases and superficial wound infection in 2 cases. Conclusion: The treatment of distal femoral fracture with MIPO using a LCP was considered a useful method which can result in satisfactory clinical and radiologic outcomes if there is accurate understanding about the surgical techniques and appropriate procedures involved.

This paper estimates the optimal government debt ratio of Korea using an economic model based on an optimal capital structure theory in corporate finance literature. Empirical results indicate that there exists a nonlinear inverse relationship between the government debt ratio and social welfare, which implies that optimal government debt ratio could exist. Estimation result using the time-series data of government debt in Korea resulted in an optimal government debt ratio of 21%, which means that social welfare in Korea is maximized at this specific debt ratio.

N/A Ultrasonography has proven useful in evaluating the diagnosis of biliary obstruction and focal disease of the liver. On the other hand, the place of abdominal ultrasound in the diagnosis of diffuse hepatic disease is less clear. In order to evaluate the reliability fo the ultrasonography in the diagnosis of diffuse parenchymal liver idsease, a prospective study was made of ultrasonographic findings in normal liver 62 cases and liver cirrhosis 40 cases. We took 9 ultrasonographical findings for landmarks of ultrasonographic diagnosis in liver cirrhosis; 1) Inferior edge of left lobe 2) Surface of liver 3) Intrahepatic echo pattern 4) Liver-spleen echo contrast 5) Deep attenuation 6) Irregularity of intrahepatic portal vein wall 7) Blurring of hepatic vein 8) Thickness of gallbladder wall 9) Splenic volume (a x b) Using these landmarks, there seemed to be distinct difference between normal liver and liver cirrhosis, except deep attenuation. We concluded that these landmarks were very useful to diagnose liver cirrhosis and the combination of several features provided more diagnostic accuracy than any single echographic finding.
