This paper reports on the balance weight effect on the lubrication and friction characteristics of crankshaft system. To determine the main bearing loads, the crankshaft was treated as statically determinate system. Four and eight-balance weight crankshafts were considered, and minimum oil film thickness and friction loss were calculated. The main bearing loads were increased in the four-balance shaft due to the increasing of unbalanced rotating mass at No. 1 and 3 main bearing sides. The minimum oil film thickness of four-balance shaft became thinner than eight-balance, and friction loss was increased.

This paper reports on the effects of crankshaft offset on the engine friction. The effects of crank offset are investigated through the theoretical analysis. In this study, the mathematical models are presented fer evaluationg the friction level of each engine parts. Crank offset influences on the side force acted on the piston pin and sliding speed of piston. Crank offset is very effective to reduce the piston skirt friction. With application of crank offset, total engine friction decreases at low engine speed, but that increase as engine speed increases.

This paper reports on the starved lubrication for the piston ring. In this analysis, two types of inlet boundary conditions, fully flooded and starved condition, are considered at the leading edge. The inlet position of effective lubrication and squeeze term are obtained by numerically iterative method. The effective lubricated region is reduced due to the starved condition at the inlet. The starved condition at the inlet significantly reduced the minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) at the midstroke of piston, and the friction force is also increased due to the thin oil film thickness. In the starved conditions, the power loss is significantly increased.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of trunk stability training on improving trunk control, respiratory function, and respiratory muscle activation in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects were assigned to two groups: the intervention group (n=15) and the control group (n=15). Both groups participated in a conventional stroke rehabilitation program, but the intervention group also received trunk stability training for 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week, for 6 weeks. The main trunk stability exercise consisted of the dead bug exercise. Trunk control was assessed using a trunk impairment scale, and respiratory function (pulmonary function and respiratory muscle function) was assessed using spirometry. The data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Results : Trunk control was significantly positively correlated with pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength. Both groups showed a significant increase in trunk control and respiratory function. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that a conventional stroke rehabilitation program and trunk stability training have positive effects on respiratory function and respiratory muscle activation in stroke patients.

Purpose : This study aims to examine the effects of home-based respiratory muscle training on respiratory function among the aged in the local community. Methods : A total of 13 elderly subjects were enrolled in this study. All the subjects participated in a respiratory muscle training program conducted at a local health center for 60 minutes a day;1 day per week;for 4 weeks. Additionally;they completed home-based respiratory muscle training each day. This home-based respiratory muscle training consisted of stretching exercises;breathing exercises;and strength training. To determine changes before and after intervention;forced vital capacity (FVC);forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1);forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC);maximal inspiratory pressure;maximal expiratory pressure;and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were measured. Paired t-tests were used to analyze all the data. Results : The results showed that there was a significant increase in FEV1 and PEF. Furthermore;there were no significant differences in respiratory strength before and after 4 weeks of training. Conclusion : In conclusion;the home-based respiratory muscle training positively affected respiratory function among the aged in the local community.

One of the main causes of severe wear or crack initiation in wheel and rail is the contact stress due to wheel-rail contact. First, we obtain contact stress due to the rail mounting slope using the finite element method. Second, the shape design based on more reasonable contact stress analysis rather th~n a general Hertzian contact theory is investigated in order to reduce the contact stress. The optimum -design is performed using the simple 2-D finite element model and its results are verified by 311) finite element analysis.

Many researchers have dealt with the problems of fracture mechanics. Generally, these researches are concerned with crack in isotropic material without other micro defects. Actual structure, however, may contain micro defects as well as crack in manufacture processing or operation. If it contains mi defects near a crack, some different characteristics will be appear in fracture behaviors of the crack. This study examines the effect of the micro defect on stress intensity factor of center slant crack rectangular plate subjected to uniform uniaxial tensile stress. In this study, boundary element method(BEM) is used for analysis in stress intensity factor(SIF).
