In this study effect of residual stress and its redistribution in weldment on the fatigue crack propagation was investigated. Fatigue tests were conducted by the center notched specimens machined with welded plate. The residual stress and its redistribution after the crack growth were measured by the magnetizing stress indicator and hole-drilling method. Fatigue crack propagation was estimated by the specimens having residual stress redistributed after the cracks growth and having the effects of crack closure. Crack growth rates were predicted and compared with experimental results. It had been found that the predicted crack propagations rates have a good agreement with experimental results when the redistribution of residual stress was considered.

A strategy of the optimal shape design with FEA (finite Element Analysis) for 2-D structures is proposed by comparing subproblem approximation method with first order approximation method. A cantilever beam with two different lading conditions, a concentrated load and an evenly distributed load, and truss structure with a concentrated loading condition are implemented to optimize the shape. It give a good design strategy on the optimal truss structure as well as the optimal cantilever beam shape. It is found that the convergence is quickly finished with the iteration number below ten. Optimized shapes of cantilever beam and truss structure are shown with stress contour plot by he results of the subproblem approximation method and the first order approximation method.

A tracking algorithm employing HMA is proposed for more accurate guidance of autopilot system guided missiles and unmanned vehicles. HMA is based on spatial transform with triangular patches and 2-D affine transform, from which the information on rotation and scale changes is obtained. Also, we can adaptively adjust the size of the target block from these information. As a result, the algorithm provides more accurate tracking results than BMA when the object has rotational motion, zooming, or scale changes.
