구효서의 소설은 난해하다. 그의 "깡통따개가 없는 마을"의 11편 작품은 출구를 찾아 고투하지만, 그러나 찾지 못하는 인물을 다룬다. 김한수의 "저녁밥 짓는 마을"은 열한살 소년이 험한 세월을 건너 스무살 문턱에 도달하기까지를 그린 성장소설이고 이순원의 "미혼에게 바친다"는 서른두살 미혼남과 스물넷(또는 다섯)된 유부녀의 절실하고 긴장된 사랑이야기를 담았다.

해방 전후 지식인의 행로와 그 의미 ―이병주의 「관부연락선」

「Kuynbuyeonrakseon」 of Lee, Byung-Ju deals with 10 years from 1940 to 1950. This period was in the midst of a great upheaval. So, the most koreans at this time must have suffered the discontinuity and the confusion of identity. Those made them not to go over their direct experience. The most novels that dealt with this period could not go further over the one or two pieces of individual experience and the express of the subjective faith. Through the concrete testimony of a middle-intellectual about the experience of the studing in japan, of Hakbyeung from late in the 1930's to Haebang and the hard time that must be endured, 「Kuynbuyeonrakseon」 represented this period deeply and widely. So, we can say that the literary historical meaning of [Kuynbuyeonrakseon] is very great. 「Kuynbuyeonrakseon」 is the practice of the radical reconsidering of the idea which considers the human being is subordinate to history because of being closed in the idea of the progress of history. The first principle that leads the narrative of 「Kuynbuyeonrakseon」 is the alienity. Standing against the realities of sensitivity and politic, the hero of this novel alienate himself. The road of a permanent stranger of this hero has a meaning that criticizes the progress of the korean modern history. The second principle is farthernity that realize itself as a teacher. It is the sprit of embracement, of future orienting on the past and tradition, of protection of the de-ideological modern education system and knowledge. 이병주의 「관부연락선」은 1940년에서 1950년까지, 해방 전후 10년간을 다룬 작품이다. 엄청난 격동기인 만큼 이 시기를 살았던 대부분의 한국인들은 체험의 불연속성, 이에서 비롯된 자기동일성의 혼란을 겪어야 했다. 그 현실을 자신의 직접 체험을 넘어 이해하기 어려웠던 근본 원인은 이것이다. 이 시기를 다룬 소설의 대부분은 개인이 겪은 특수 체험 한 두 토막을 담아내거나, 주관적 신념 토로에 그쳤다. 1930년대 후반에서 해방 전까지의 일본 유학생 체험, 학병 체험, 어느 한쪽의 선택이 강요되었던 해방에서 한국전쟁에 이르는 기간 중도적 지식인으로서 견뎌내야 했던 힘든 시간들에 대한 구체적 증언을 통해 이 격동의 시기를 폭넓게 재현한 「관부연락선」의 사적 의미는 대단히 크다. 「관부연락선」은 ‘역사의 진보’라는 관념에 갇혀 그 역사를 살고 만들었으며 이끌었던 ‘인간’을 역사에 종속된 것으로 인식하는 우리 문학의 지배적인 한 경향에 대한 근본 반성의 실천으로서도 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 「관부연락선」의 서사를 이끄는 원리의 하나는 이방인성이다. 광기에 가까운 감성과 절대적 정당성에 대한 확신으로 스스로를 가둔 이념이 휩쓰는 감성과 정치의 시대현실에 맞서, 합리적 이성주의자인 주인공은 스스로를 그 같은 현실로부터 소외시킨다. 현실과 내내 불화하며 이방인으로 살아가며, 마침내는 그 비정한 현실의 폭력성에 치여 행방불명되고 마는 주인공의 행로는 한 시기 한국사의 전개에 대한 근본 비판의 의미를 갖는다. 「관부연락선」을 이끄는 서사의 다른 원리 하나는 父性이다. 교사의 자리에 서는 것으로 실현되는 그 부성은 구분과 배제의 메커니즘이 지배하는 현실 속 위태로운 어린 생명을 감싸안으려는 포용의 정신이며, 유토피아를 향하는 열정을 좇아 전통과 과거를 부정하는 의식이 지배하는 현실에 맞서 그것들을 이어받고 그것들 위에서 미래를 모색하려는 정신이고, 이데올로기가 지배하는 현실을 등지고 이데올로기 중립적인 근대 교육 제도와 지식 체계를 옹호하려는 정신이다.

Manju in the korean modern novel have the various characteristics. Manju are the space of urgent existence, of death, of inequality, of despair, of open possibility. The compulsion of urgent existence breeds the logic of existence. The compulsion of escape from the death breeds the revolutionary political consciousness. The characteristic of inequality breeds the investigation into the original nature of the human being and the investigation into the absolute character. And the characteristic of despair breeds the self-confirmation of the ruined revolutionists. The characteristic of open possibility breeds the romantic walking and the journey of strong will.
